Start with variables and functions, then build toward objects, modules, and asynchronous code. These nine concepts form a practical map of modern JavaScript—not an official ranking—and show how everyday code fits together.
1. Block-scoped variables: let and const
A variable’s scope determines where its name can be used. Modern JavaScript code commonly uses const for bindings that will not be reassigned and let when reassignment is needed. Both are block-scoped: a declaration inside braces is limited to that block.
const name = "Mina";
let score = 0;
if (name) {
score = 10;
}
const prevents rebinding the variable; it does not make an object or array immutable. You can still change an object’s properties:
const settings = { theme: "light" };
settings.theme = "dark"; // Allowed
var is an older declaration with different, function-oriented scoping behavior. When reading existing code, know what it means; for new code, let and const make block boundaries clearer. MDN’s JavaScript language overview covers variables and scope.

2. Functions and closures
Functions are values in JavaScript. You can store one in a variable, pass it to another function, or return it. That flexibility is why functions work naturally as callbacks—for example, a function passed to an event handler or an array method.
A closure is a function together with access to the lexical environment in which it was created. In practical terms, an inner function can continue to use variables from its outer function even after the outer function has finished:
function makeCounter() {
let count = 0;
return function () {
count += 1;
return count;
};
}
const nextCount = makeCounter();
nextCount(); // 1
nextCount(); // 2
The returned function retains access to count, so each call updates the same value. Closures help explain callbacks and functions that retain state.
3. Arrow functions—and when not to use them
Arrow functions are concise function expressions. They are especially handy for short callbacks and transformations:

const doubled = [1, 2, 3].map(number => number * 2);
They are not simply shorter ordinary functions. An arrow function does not create its own this; it uses the this value from the surrounding context. That is useful when a callback should keep the surrounding context, but it can be wrong when a method needs this to refer to the object receiving the call. Use an ordinary function when you need that function’s own this behavior.
4. Destructuring, rest, and spread
Destructuring pulls values out of arrays or properties out of objects into variables:
const user = { name: "Mina", role: "editor" };
const { name, role } = user;
const [first, second] = ["red", "blue"];
The ... syntax has different uses depending on context. In a function parameter, rest collects remaining arguments into an array. In an array or object literal, spread expands values or properties into a new literal:
function showUser({ name, ...details }) {
return `${name}: ${details.role}`;
}
const original = [1, 2];
const combined = [...original, 3];
Here, ...details collects the object’s remaining properties, while ...original expands the array’s elements. The same punctuation does not mean the same operation in every position.

5. Template literals for readable strings
Template literals use backticks and allow expressions to be inserted with ${...}. They can also span multiple lines:
const item = "notebook";
const message = `Added ${item} to your list.`;
Use them when interpolation or multiline formatting improves clarity; ordinary quotes remain appropriate for simple strings.
6. Objects and prototypes
Objects hold properties and can inherit behavior through a prototype. When a property is not found directly on an object, JavaScript can look up the prototype chain. This prototype-based model underlies how objects share behavior.
const animal = { speak() { return "Sound"; } };
const dog = Object.create(animal);
dog.name = "Pip";
dog.speak(); // "Sound"
dog has its own name, while speak is available through its prototype. Understanding this makes JavaScript’s object behavior less mysterious, including the behavior behind class syntax.

7. Classes as syntax over prototypes
Classes provide a familiar way to define and create related objects. A class constructor initializes each instance, and methods are available to instances through the prototype model:
class User {
constructor(name) {
this.name = name;
}
greet() {
return `Hello, ${this.name}`;
}
}
const user = new User("Mina");
user.greet(); // "Hello, Mina"
Class syntax organizes object creation, but it does not replace JavaScript’s prototype-based inheritance. MDN’s language overview discusses both classes and the JavaScript object model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Modules: sharing code between files
Modules let one file export values for another file to import. Declarations that are not exported stay local to their module, which helps keep code organized and reduces accidental name collisions.
// math.js
export function add(a, b) {
return a + b;
}
// app.js
import { add } from "./math.js";
console.log(add(2, 3));
The import path is interpreted by the host environment. Browsers and server-side JavaScript environments may have different setup and resolution rules, so use the conventions of the environment running your code.

9. Promises, async/await, and the event loop
Some operations finish later—for example, retrieving data from a service. A promise represents an operation’s eventual completion or failure. A callback can handle the result; promise chaining with .then() and .catch() provides another approach. async and await make promise-based code read in a sequential style:
async function loadUser() {
try {
const response = await fetch("/api/user");
const user = await response.json();
return user;
} catch (error) {
console.error("Could not load user", error);
}
}
An async function always returns a promise. If its body returns a value, that value becomes the fulfillment value of the returned promise; if an error escapes, the promise is rejected. await pauses that function’s progress until the awaited promise settles, without blocking the rest of the runtime from doing other work.
The event loop coordinates when queued work can run. JavaScript is single-threaded by nature, but runtimes can handle asynchronous operations concurrently; concurrency does not mean that JavaScript automatically executes all such work in parallel. This distinction helps explain why asynchronous code can remain responsive while its result is still pending. MDN’s overview of JavaScript introduces asynchronous programming and the event loop.
What JavaScript concepts should you learn first?
Learn in dependency order: understand let, const, scope, and functions first. Then practice callbacks and arrow functions, followed by destructuring, rest/spread, and template literals. Once you can read objects comfortably, learn prototypes and classes; modules show how to organize that code across files. Finish with promises and async/await, which make more sense once functions and return values are familiar.
