8chan relaunched as 8kun on November 3, 2019, after internet providers withdrew services and the site was disrupted. Its new global rule said content illegal under U.S. law would not be allowed. That was the site’s stated policy—not proof that moderation would reliably enforce it.
What happened to 8chan, and what is 8kun?
8kun was the new name for 8chan when the site returned online in November 2019. The Anti-Defamation League’s history of the site describes several rounds of deplatforming and name changes before the relaunch as 8kun.top. The disruption followed provider withdrawals in August 2019, after the El Paso shooting, and further changes among service providers. The ADL’s account and The Washington Post’s November 4, 2019 report describe the broader context.
Changing the name and domain did not, by itself, resolve concerns about the site’s content or moderation. The ADL and contemporaneous coverage discussed 8chan’s association with violent extremist content; those are attributed descriptions of the site’s history, not a claim that every user or board shared the same purpose.
What did 8kun say about illegal content?
8kun’s current global rule states: “Do not post, request, or link to any content that is illegal in the United States of America and do not create boards with the purpose of posting or spreading such content.” This is the site’s own policy statement. It is not independent evidence about how consistently the rule is applied, and a site rule does not determine whether particular content is legal under U.S. law.

How were boards and moderation described?
In its FAQ, 8kun says global staff uphold the global rule, while board owners manage other rules for their boards. The FAQ also describes moderation and account features, says posting does not require a name or email address, and says boards may be restricted, deleted, blocked, or banned for illegal content or neglected moderation.

Those details describe the site’s stated operating model. They do not independently establish how often moderators act, how quickly they respond, or whether enforcement has prevented prohibited content from appearing.
What changed at the 2019 relaunch?
Engadget reported that 8kun returned on November 3, 2019, and that many 8chan boards migrated. Its launch coverage said the /pol/ board was absent at launch, but the reporting did not establish whether that absence was deliberate or whether the site’s new rules would be enforced effectively. Engadget’s report captures what was known at the time; it should not be read as a description of the site’s current board lineup.

Do the old traffic figures show how many people used 8chan?
No. The ADL reported that 8ch.net reached an Alexa daily ranking of 886 out of one million sites on March 17, 2019, its highest daily ranking. It also cited Umbrella data giving the site an average daily ranking of 78,000 from March 16–19, 2019, which the report described as placing it in the top 10% of one million sites during that four-day period. These are historical rankings based on visibility and DNS-derived measures—not verified user counts, and not current traffic totals. The ADL report provides the figures and their context.
