There is no 80 PLUS tier every PC needs. Choose a power supply by its verified model, system compatibility, and your expected use—not by the badge alone. For desktop PSUs, Gold requires higher minimum efficiency than Bronze at the listed test points; Platinum and Titanium set higher thresholds. The applicable numbers depend on whether the certification category is 115V or 230V EU.

What an 80 PLUS rating measures

CLEAResult describes 80 PLUS as “a performance specification and certification program for internal power supply units (PSUs).” The tier indicates minimum conversion-efficiency requirements at specified load points for a particular input-voltage category. It is not a complete ranking of PSU quality.

The program publishes separate tables for desktop, workstation, non-redundant server, redundant data center, and industrial supplies. The comparisons below are for internal non-redundant desktop PSUs; data-center thresholds are not interchangeable with them. See CLEAResult’s program details.

Bronze, Gold, Platinum and Titanium efficiency thresholds

These are minimum certification efficiencies at the listed rated-output load points, not a promise that a PSU will operate at those efficiencies at every load in every computer. “Not specified” means the relevant official desktop table does not list a threshold at that point.

Platinum Not specified in the official table 90% 92% 89%
Titanium 90% 92% 94% 90%

For the 115V desktop category, Titanium is the only one of these four tiers with an explicit 10% load requirement. Thresholds are from CLEAResult’s official requirements.

The 230V EU values differ from the 115V values, so confirm the applicable category before comparing badges or quoting a threshold. These figures are also published in CLEAResult’s requirements.

What the tier does—and does not—tell you

What it tells you

A tier lets you compare the minimum efficiency a PSU must meet at the required test points for its applicable category. A certification report can show results for a specific tested model. For example, a CLEAResult-hosted report for Great Wall’s CRPS1300D5 records a 230V, 60Hz test on 2024-02-08: 94.08% at 20% load, 94.40% at 50% load, and 92.45% at 100% load. The report states Platinum compliance. Those are results for that model, not typical or guaranteed results for every Platinum PSU. See the CRPS1300D5 verification report.

What it does not tell you

The badge alone does not establish that a PSU is quieter, more reliable, better protected, or compatible with a particular PC. Those questions require model-specific evidence, such as independent electrical and noise testing, the manufacturer’s specifications, warranty terms, and connector and form-factor details. Efficiency is one attribute among several; a PSU manufacturer also explains why it should not be treated as the sole comparison criterion in its PSU efficiency explainer.

Certification thresholds are not a forecast of your electricity bill. The cited program material does not establish a universal savings amount or payback period for choosing a higher tier.

How to choose the right tier for your PC

  1. Confirm the PSU your system needs. Check the required wattage, form factor, connectors, and relevant compatibility information for your build. There is no universal wattage recommendation established by the 80 PLUS tier.
  2. Verify the exact PSU model and category. Search the model in CLEAResult’s 80 PLUS portal and, where available, inspect its certification report. A tier printed on packaging is less useful than a listing or report for the precise model.
  3. Match the comparison to your input category and use. Compare the correct 115V or 230V EU desktop thresholds, then consider the loads at which your system is likely to operate. The table gives required test-point efficiencies, not a complete efficiency curve for your particular PC.
  4. Compare the total value, not just the tier. A higher threshold means a stricter efficiency requirement at the measured points, but it does not by itself show that paying more is worthwhile for your system. Compare price with expected use and the other model-specific evidence.
  5. Check performance and fit separately. Review credible testing for electrical behavior, noise, and protections, plus the manufacturer’s warranty, specifications, connectors, and form-factor information.

When comparing two or more PSUs, use the verified model and certification category, efficiency at relevant load points, wattage and physical/electrical fit, model-specific test results, warranty, and price. The 80 PLUS tier addresses only part of that decision.
