To secure a webcam, combine physical privacy with software and account protections: close or cover the lens when it is idle, limit which apps and websites can access it, install updates, and—if you use an internet-connected home camera—secure its account and network. No single step covers every access path. A cover blocks the image, for example, but does not turn off the microphone or prevent software access.
1. Block the lens when the camera is idle
Check for a built-in privacy shutter, camera switch, or keyboard camera key before adding an accessory. Their availability and design vary by device; Microsoft describes examples such as camera keys, switches, and shutters in its Windows camera troubleshooting guide.
If you use a separate cover, make sure it fits the bezel and does not interfere with a built-in shutter. A cover is a physical barrier to the lens view only: it does not block audio, disable camera software, or protect a connected camera account.
2. Review camera access in Windows
On Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Camera. Review the controls for device camera access, Microsoft Store apps, and desktop apps. These are distinct levels of access, and desktop programs may not appear as individually controllable entries in the app list. Microsoft documents these controls and the Windows-version differences in Manage app permissions for a camera in Windows.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Windows also provides camera-use indicators: a light may turn on when the camera is available, or a notification may appear when it turns on or off if the device has no camera light. Treat an indicator as a useful signal, not a substitute for reviewing permissions. Microsoft notes that Windows Hello may use the camera even when app camera access is off. See Windows camera, microphone, and privacy.
3. Remove access from apps that do not need the camera
In the Windows camera privacy settings, turn off camera access for apps that have no camera-related purpose. Keep it enabled for the apps you actually use for video calls, recording, or other intended functions. Check both the Microsoft Store app controls and desktop-app control; the latter may govern desktop software as a group rather than offering a separate toggle for every program. The exact controls can vary by Windows version and device.

4. Check browser permissions for individual websites
Allowing a browser to use the camera is not the same as granting every website access. In Microsoft Edge, websites request permission individually, and you can review site permissions and block a site. Blocking camera access may stop video calls or other camera features from working on that website. Microsoft explains browser and website camera permissions in its camera, microphone, and privacy guidance.
5. Keep software and camera firmware updated
Install updates for your operating system, browser, camera-using apps, and—when applicable—the camera’s firmware. Updates can address security bugs. For internet-connected cameras, update the app used to view the feed as well as the camera itself. The FTC covers software and viewing-app updates in its guide to securing home security cameras and its advice on securing internet-connected devices at home.

If the computer is still running Windows 10, note that Microsoft ended support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. See its Windows camera permissions page for that support notice.
6. Protect accounts for connected home cameras
This step applies to network-connected home cameras such as security cameras and baby monitors, not an ordinary laptop webcam. Change default passwords, avoid reusing passwords from other services, and enable two-factor authentication if the camera service offers it. Use encryption and secure web access when the product provides those options. These are account and connection safeguards; they do not replace software updates or router security. The FTC’s home security camera guidance covers these protections.

7. Secure the router and network used by home cameras
A network-connected camera depends partly on the security of the network it joins. The FTC recommends a strong router password, an enabled firewall, current router software, and WPA2 or WPA3 wireless encryption. Consider putting cameras on a separate network if your router supports it, so they are not on the same network as computers and other devices. These router recommendations are for connected home cameras; they are not settings for a laptop’s built-in webcam. See the FTC camera security guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Limit remote viewing and unused features
For a connected home camera, disable remote viewing if you do not need to check the feed away from home, and limit viewing access to the people who need it. Turn off or disconnect connected features and devices you no longer use. The FTC also recommends reviewing access logs where available to check which devices have connected; its connected-device guidance discusses updates, unused features, and access logs.

What a webcam cover can—and cannot—protect
| Protection | What it does | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Physical shutter or cover | Blocks the camera’s view through the lens while closed. | Does not disable the microphone, stop software from accessing the camera, or secure a connected camera’s account or network. |
| Operating-system and browser permissions | Control whether apps or websites can access the camera through those software settings. | Do not physically block the lens or replace account and network protections for connected home cameras. |
| Account, firmware, and router safeguards | Address risks associated with network-connected home cameras, including remote viewing and the network they use. | Do not physically cover a lens or apply to every laptop webcam setting. |
These measures address different paths, so use the ones that fit your device and how you use it. A laptop webcam’s app permissions are not the same problem as a home camera’s cloud account or router.
Can someone turn on your webcam without you knowing?
Camera access can depend on device settings, app permissions, browser permissions, and—on networked cameras—account and network security. The guidance here does not establish how often unauthorized webcam access occurs, and it is not accurate to assume that every webcam is remotely hackable. Review access controls and keep software current; use the camera indicator as a signal, while remembering that Windows Hello may use the camera outside ordinary app access.
