There is no single best website for online classes: the right choice depends on what you want to learn, who teaches the course, how it is structured, and whether you need a recognized credential. Compare the exact course—not just the platform name—before you spend time or money.
How to choose an online learning platform
Start with the outcome you want: explore a subject, learn a practical skill, advance at work, complete academic study, or meet requirements for a credential. Then compare the specific courses that could meet that goal.
- Subject and course source: Check that the course covers your topic and identify who created and teaches it. A platform’s brand alone does not establish the quality of every course.
- Format and support: Look for self-paced or scheduled instruction, a single course or a guided learning path, and opportunities for exercises, projects, or feedback.
- Credential: Distinguish a completion certificate from a professional certificate, academic credit, a degree, or an external certification or license. Confirm who issues it and what assessments or other requirements apply.
- Cost and access: Check whether you can preview or study the course for free, whether full access requires a payment or subscription, and whether a certificate costs extra. Terms can differ by course.
- Time and accessibility: Review the estimated workload, language and subtitle options, device requirements, and schedule before enrolling.

1. Coursera
Coursera lists courses, certificates, and degrees from universities and companies across subjects such as business, AI, data science, computer science, IT, healthcare, languages, social sciences, arts and humanities, physical science and engineering, and mathematics. Its home page describes free learning or previews for some courses, with an upgrade or financial aid potentially needed for full access or a certificate. Consider Coursera when you are comparing university- or company-created learning, a certificate path, or degree options. Verify the exact course’s instructor, assessment, credential issuer, and any academic-credit terms rather than assuming every listing carries the same recognition.
2. edX
edX is a site named in this comparison, but current course formats, costs, free access, and credential terms are not established here. Before enrolling, inspect the individual listing for its provider, schedule, workload, assessment, and the credential—if any—that it offers.
3. LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn Learning groups its courses into business, technology, and creative subjects. It describes individual courses, learning paths, role guides, hands-on practice, and preparation for some external credentials, including certifications, continuing-education units, and academic credits. Check the credential before paying
A course certificate can document completion without counting as academic credit or qualifying you for a professional license. A course that prepares you for an external exam does not, by itself, award the external credential.
- Open the exact course or program listing and identify the named credential, if one is offered.
- Find the issuer: the platform, a university, a company, or an external certification or licensing body.
- Check the issuer’s requirements for exams, graded work, prerequisites, credit eligibility, or additional fees.
- If the credential affects hiring, academic credit, or licensure, confirm acceptance with the employer, school, or licensing authority that will evaluate it.
Make a short list before enrolling
For each candidate course, write down its subject, provider and instructor, format, workload, credential and issuer, and full access cost. Eliminate courses that do not meet your non-negotiable requirements, then compare the remaining options on the amount of practice and support they provide. Recheck prices, catalog availability, and access terms on the course page before enrolling because they can change.
