1. Search from Start
- Press the Windows key or select Start.
- Type Notepad.
- Select Notepad in the results.
This is Microsoft’s documented way to open the app: Open Notepad.
2. Search from the taskbar
- Select Search on the taskbar, or press Windows+S to open Windows Search.
- Type Notepad, then select the app in the results.
This is another quick way to find the app. Microsoft’s Windows Search guide explains how Search works.
3. Find Notepad in Start’s app list
- Open Start.
- Select All to show the apps list.
- Scroll through the alphabetical list to Notepad, then select it.
The exact Start layout can vary, but Microsoft describes accessing the full app list from Start in its Windows 11 Start menu guide.

4. Launch Notepad with Run
- Press Windows+R to open Run.
- Type
notepad. - Press Enter.
This keyboard-first method opens Notepad directly. Microsoft documents the Windows+R shortcut in its Windows keyboard shortcuts list.
5. Pin Notepad to the taskbar
Pin Notepad if you want it available with a single click:

- Search for Notepad from Start or taskbar Search.
- Right-click the Notepad result and choose Pin to taskbar.
If Notepad is already open, right-click its taskbar icon and choose Pin to taskbar instead. Microsoft documents both options in its taskbar customization guide.
6. Create a desktop shortcut
A desktop shortcut is useful if you prefer launching Notepad from the desktop. Use the app listing or Windows’ shortcut workflow to create one; the available menu labels can differ depending on how Notepad appears in your Windows 11 build. Microsoft’s desktop shortcut instructions cover shortcuts for programs.

7. Open a text file with Notepad
To open an existing .txt file, double-click it if Notepad is the app assigned to that file type. Otherwise, right-click the file, choose Open with, and select Notepad. Available menu labels and the default app can vary by Windows setup. Microsoft identifies Notepad as an app for opening text documents in its Notepad help.
If Notepad is missing
If Notepad does not appear in Search or the app list, Microsoft says it can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Store access or app availability may be restricted on a work or school device; contact your administrator if you cannot install it.
