Steam Client WebHelper helps display Steam’s interface, including web-based pages such as the Library. If it is using unusually high CPU, try the seven steps below in order, changing one thing at a time and checking whether CPU use changes. Steam’s official guidance covers a related webhelper problem—when it stops responding—so these are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes for every high-CPU case.
1. Exit Steam completely and restart it
Steam Support recommends restarting the client when webhelper is not responding. A full exit is a useful first check for a temporary problem:
- Open the Steam menu and choose Exit.
- Wait for Steam to close, then launch it again.
- Return to the same Steam page that was using high CPU and check whether the behavior changes.
If Steam remains open, use its normal Exit command again rather than ending individual webhelper processes.
2. Test Steam’s GPU-accelerated web rendering setting
Steam Support says, “Some video drivers can have trouble rendering Steam content if GPU acceleration is turned on.” To test whether that applies to your system, open Steam > Settings > Interface and turn off GPU-accelerated rendering in web views. Restart Steam and compare CPU use on the same page as before.

This is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed permanent fix: Steam warns that disabling acceleration can make the interface perform less well. If CPU use improves but the interface becomes less responsive, weigh that tradeoff or restore the setting.
3. Check for a graphics-driver update
If turning off GPU acceleration appears to help, Steam recommends considering a graphics-driver update. Check the official driver source for your GPU and operating system, install an appropriate update if one is available, and then test Steam again with the setting enabled. An update may help with a rendering issue, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

4. Check for interference from other software
Steam notes that some security software can interfere with webhelper’s security sandbox and cause hangs or crashes. That guidance concerns those symptoms, so it does not establish that security software is behind every high-CPU report.
If the timing suggests a conflict, close suspected applications one at a time and check Steam. You can temporarily disable a suspected application only for a controlled test; restore security protection immediately afterward. Do not leave protection disabled as a workaround.

5. Restart Steam’s rendering components
Steam Support provides an option to restart only the client’s rendering components. If Steam offers that prompt or control, follow its instructions and let the components restart. Avoid indiscriminately ending processes in Task Manager or another process manager; use Steam’s own option instead.
6. Clear Steam’s browser data
Some Steam Community users suggest clearing cached web resources through Steam’s Delete Web Browser Data control. The control’s location can vary with the client interface; use Steam Settings and look for the browser-data option rather than deleting Steam folders manually.

This is an anecdotal suggestion, not an official guarantee that CPU use will fall. Clearing browser data may require you to sign in again to web-based content.
7. Reduce Library effects and compare Steam views
Community suggestions include using a lower-performance Library mode, reducing community content, closing extra Steam windows, and avoiding pages with animated effects. These changes are optional and may reduce interface effects or functionality; they are not confirmed fixes.

Check whether the high CPU use occurs only on a particular Library page or while Steam is in the foreground. A Valve Linux issue describes one setup where a selected Library view and foreground state coincided with high CPU use. That single report is not evidence that the same page or condition is the cause on other systems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare results without guessing
For each change, return to the same Steam view and compare CPU use under similar conditions. Note whether the client is foregrounded or in the background, whether the Library or another view is open, and whether the interface feels less responsive. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which change, if any, makes a difference.
Linux-specific checks
Steam’s Linux support guidance recommends checking video drivers. It describes support for Steam on the most recent Ubuntu LTS with Unity, Gnome, or KDE; that stated scope should not be read as a guarantee for every Linux distribution or desktop environment.
For Linux startup problems, Steam also suggests installing a 32-bit OpenGL program and confirming it runs. Its Ubuntu examples are mesa-utils:i386 and glxinfo. These are driver and startup checks, not universal remedies for high CPU usage. If webhelper keeps crashing or restarting, Linux issue reports describe that behavior on particular systems; collect your system details and use Steam’s support or reporting channels rather than assuming a single cause.
