Not all seven Roblox horror games in this list are based on verified real events. Their inspirations range from an account of a real survival ordeal to personal stories, Japanese folklore, and creepypasta or fictional material. The distinction matters: a game’s premise or a developer’s “true events” description is not independent proof that its story happened as shown.
How to read claims that a horror game is “based on a true story”
These experiences use several different kinds of inspiration. A reported real-world event, a story attributed to an individual, an urban legend, and a fictional horror scenario are not equivalent evidence. Developers may also reshape an account and add supernatural threats for gameplay.
That blend is part of the appeal of Roblox creepypasta games: a study of the genre describes how players experience creepy lore and legends while entertaining the possibility that something could be true. That observation explains the appeal; it does not verify any particular game’s backstory. TechWiser’s September 25, 2026 list is the source for the inspirations summarized below, except where a developer description is identified separately.
Seven games and what their backstories are said to draw on
| Game | Stated inspiration or evidence type | Horror premise |
|---|---|---|
| 99 Nights in the Forest | Attributed to a reported 2023 Colombian Amazon plane-crash survival story | Forest survival, missing children, and supernatural enemies |
| Burrowed Fears | Developer claims true-event inspiration; also inspired by Fears to Fathom | Episodic psychological survival horror |
| Movie Massacre | Developer-attributed fan-submitted story | Night shift at a video-rental store and an escaped killer clown |
| Woodbury Getaway | Story attributed to Sydney Harper’s accounts | A snowy Vermont cabin weekend and unsettling encounters |
| Survive Teke-Teke! | Japanese urban legend, not a confirmed real event | A ghostly threat tied to train folklore |
| 100 Days At Sea | Bermuda Triangle mystery tales | Resource gathering, raft building, island exploration, and rescue |
| Scary Grocery: The Night Shift | Multiple accounts, Reddit creepypastas, and fictional stories | Checking customers and shooting doppelgangers |
99 Nights in the Forest
TechWiser connects the game’s search for four missing children in a forest to the 2023 Colombian Amazon plane crash. The article reports that four children survived for around 40 days before rescuers found them. That duration is TechWiser’s 2026 account; it is not independently confirmed here. The game’s Deer and Cultists are fictional supernatural additions, not part of the stated real-world inspiration.

Burrowed Fears
The Roblox listing for the experience, created by Nefarious Game Studio, describes it as “an episodic psychological horror game based on true events.” The listing also says it is inspired by Fears to Fathom, a series that uses real-life accounts, though TechWiser notes that the series’ developer has acknowledged making up some scenarios. The Roblox wording is the game creator’s claim, not an independent fact check.
The listing says Burrowed Fears supports up to five players and recommends playing solo. When the listing was inspected, it showed no running experiences; that is a point-in-time status, and availability can change. Check Roblox for the current experience listing and availability.

Movie Massacre
TechWiser attributes the premise to a fan-submitted story described by the developer: a night shift at a video-rental store interrupted by an escaped killer clown. That is an attributed submission, not verified reporting. The article’s author expresses skepticism about the account, and the story was not independently confirmed.
Woodbury Getaway
TechWiser attributes the story to accounts by Sydney Harper about a snowy weekend trip to a Vermont cabin and unsettling encounters. It also says the developer added fictional and supernatural elements. Treat the premise as an attributed personal account adapted for horror, not as a verified record of events.

Survive Teke-Teke!
This game draws on Teke-Teke, a Japanese urban legend about a ghost killed by a train. The source identifies it as folklore, not a confirmed real event. Its inclusion shows why “based on real backstories” is too broad if read as a claim that every game depicts documented events.
100 Days At Sea
The survival premise—gathering resources, building a raft, exploring islands, and rescuing survivors—is linked by TechWiser to Bermuda Triangle mystery tales. The Bermuda Triangle is a real geographic area, but the game’s connection to mystery stories does not establish that its events happened. TechWiser says authorities attribute disappearances in the region to weather and environmental factors; that attribution is reported by the article, not independently sourced here.

Scary Grocery: The Night Shift
TechWiser describes a game in which players check customers and shoot doppelgangers, drawing inspiration from Shift At Midnight. Its backstory material combines multiple accounts, Reddit creepypastas, and fictional stories rather than one verified incident.

What the list does—and does not—establish
- One developer makes an explicit true-events claim: Burrowed Fears’ Roblox description says it is based on true events, but that remains the creator’s claim.
- Some entries adapt attributed accounts: 99 Nights in the Forest is linked to a reported survival story, while Movie Massacre and Woodbury Getaway are linked to submitted or personal accounts.
- Others draw on folklore or mixed fiction: Survive Teke-Teke! uses an urban legend; Scary Grocery: The Night Shift mixes accounts, creepypastas, and fiction; and 100 Days At Sea uses mystery-story associations.
- The list is not a fact-check of every inspiration: beyond the readable Burrowed Fears listing, the cited material does not independently establish that each account or event happened as the games portray it.
