The seven settings below are optional choices, not a claim that nobody benefits from them. Windows menus and available controls can vary by build, edition, rollout, and whether an organization manages your PC.
1. Suggested content in Settings
Windows can show suggested content in the Settings app. If you would rather not see these prompts, open Settings > Privacy & security > General and turn off Show me suggested content in the Settings app. Microsoft documents this as a Windows 11 control in its general privacy settings.
This switch applies to suggested content in Settings; it does not remove every recommendation elsewhere in Windows. Other promotional and personalization controls are separate.
2. Personalized recommendations and offers
Windows 11 has a separate Recommendations & offers privacy settings page. Microsoft says personalized offers can use device usage, Windows diagnostic data, account information, and data from other Microsoft products and services to provide tips, ads, and recommendations. Those recommendations can include third-party products and hardware.

If you prefer not to use this personalization, review the choices on Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. The exact options may vary by Windows version. These controls govern recommendations and offers; they are not a promise that every ad or suggestion across Windows will disappear. 3. Optional diagnostic data and Tailored experiences
Diagnostic data and Tailored experiences are distinct controls. Microsoft describes diagnostic data as information used to help troubleshoot problems and improve Windows. Tailored experiences can use diagnostic data to offer tips, ads, and recommendations. Turning off optional diagnostic data is not the same as stopping all data collection, and it does not necessarily turn off Tailored experiences.

To review them, open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback and check the separate options for diagnostic data and Tailored experiences. Some controls may be unavailable if a school or employer manages the device. Microsoft explains the settings and their purposes in its Diagnostics, feedback, and privacy in Windows guide and its documentation on optional diagnostic data for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
4. App-launch tracking for Start and Search
Windows can track app launches to personalize Start and improve search results, including surfacing apps you use most. If you do not want that personalization, open Settings > Privacy & security > General and turn off the control for letting Windows improve Start and search results by tracking app launches. The label can differ slightly across versions; Microsoft lists it among its general privacy settings.

Leave it enabled if you find frequently used apps easier to reach when Windows learns from your usage.
5. Apps that start automatically
Some apps launch when you sign in, whether or not you need them immediately. You can manage these individually rather than disabling every startup item.

- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off the toggle for an app you recognize and do not need to open automatically.
Alternatively, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select an app, and choose Disable. Task Manager’s low, medium, or high startup-impact label can help you decide what to review, but it does not establish whether an app is necessary. Keep items you rely on at sign-in, such as software that provides a function you need immediately. Microsoft documents both methods in Configure Startup applications in Windows.

Windows 11 Widgets can put information such as news, weather, calendar or to-do details, and recent photos within easy reach. If you do not use that glanceable feed, it may be a feature you would rather not keep in your routine. If you do rely on it for quick updates, turning it off would mean giving up that convenience.

The documented material establishes what Widgets provide, but not a single current turn-off procedure that applies across Windows 11 builds. Check the settings on your own PC before following instructions for hiding a taskbar icon: hiding an entry point is not necessarily the same as disabling the underlying feature. Microsoft describes Widgets and other connected experiences in Essential services and connected experiences for Windows.
7. Copilot: distinguish the app, key, and taskbar entry point
“Turn off Copilot” can mean different things: removing a Copilot app, changing what a dedicated Copilot key does, or removing an entry point from the taskbar. The available choice depends on the Windows build and whether the PC is managed. Microsoft’s app-removal instructions are scoped to enterprise users, so they should not be treated as a universal uninstall procedure for every consumer PC.
Microsoft Learn also documents Copilot-key behavior changes beginning with the May 2025 optional nonsecurity preview release. Before changing anything, identify which Copilot app or entry point you mean and check the directions for your Windows edition and device. Microsoft’s Windows and Microsoft Copilot Chat experience documentation explains the consumer and commercial distinctions.
What these changes do—and do not—mean
- They are selective controls. Suggested content, personalized offers, diagnostic data, Tailored experiences, and app-launch tracking are separate settings. Changing one does not turn off the others.
- They are preference choices. Widgets, search personalization, and startup apps can be useful; keep what serves your routine.
- They are not a performance guarantee. The cited Microsoft guidance does not establish a specific speed improvement from turning off suggestions, Widgets, or personalization.
- They do not include disabling a security safeguard. SmartScreen checks websites and downloaded files to help warn about unsafe content and malware. Turning it off removes that warning function, so it is not a sensible default privacy tweak.
- Windows 10 is a legacy case. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Its settings paths may differ from Windows 11, and the Windows 11 steps above should not be assumed to match every Windows 10 installation.
