There is no single best ecommerce host for every store. The first decision is whether you want an all-in-one hosted commerce platform, such as Shopify, or web hosting for a store application such as WooCommerce, where you manage more of the technical stack. The seven providers below—Shopify, IONOS, Bluehost, SiteGround, Hosting.com, GoDaddy, and HostGator—are a practical shortlist, not a verified ranking.
The provider recommendations and profiles in this comparison are drawn primarily from Shopify’s vendor-authored article, updated December 19, 2025. Shopify sells a product included in its own comparison, so its “best” labels are not independent test results. BigCommerce’s 2026 guide is also vendor-authored. Neither source establishes a universal winner or independently tests uptime, support, or checkout performance.
What does ecommerce hosting include?
“Ecommerce hosting” can describe two different arrangements. A hosted commerce platform bundles the store software and hosting, and usually handles more infrastructure work. With a self-managed setup such as WooCommerce, you choose a web host and take responsibility for more of the application and hosting maintenance.
WooCommerce is an open-source WordPress plugin. That offers flexibility, but you select the host and manage more of the technical stack. A hosted platform can reduce server administration, though features and customization may be tied to that provider’s ecosystem. BigCommerce’s 2026 guide puts the choice this way: “The best choice depends on your business model, technical resources, and scalability needs, but every retailer should prioritize uptime, speed, compliance, and dependable support.” That is a vendor’s guidance, not an independent standard.

How the seven providers compare
The descriptions below reflect Shopify’s December 19, 2025 comparison unless an official provider page is specified. They are not a fresh, independently verified survey of current plans, performance, or user experience.
| Provider | Approach and source-described strengths | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Hosted commerce platform. Shopify’s comparison describes hosting, SSL, a cart, PCI compliance claims, automatic updates, and unlimited bandwidth. | Shopify is assessing a category that includes its own product. Verify the precise security and payment responsibilities for your store’s payment configuration, and confirm plan limits rather than relying on “unlimited” alone. |
| IONOS | Shopify’s comparison recommends the Plus plan for business owners and describes one-click installers, plan-dependent storage, analytics, and added CPU resources. | The comparison notes a learning curve for the control panel. Check current plan specifications and renewal terms for your region. |
| Bluehost | WooCommerce- and WordPress-focused hosting. Shopify’s comparison lists product, payment-processing, domain, and storage features; Bluehost’s official page describes WooCommerce preinstalled with security and commerce tools. | Bluehost’s official Ecommerce Essentials page lists $14.99 per month for a 36-month term and $21.99 per month at renewal; VAT/GST is excluded. Confirm the checkout price and included features for your country and billing term. |
| SiteGround | Shopify’s comparison describes backups, support, Cloudflare protection, and WooCommerce integration. SiteGround separately offers a hosted store product. | These are distinct products. SiteGround’s official ecommerce page lists its Sell plan at $18 per month, prepaid for 12 months, with renewal also listed at $18 per month and a 3% platform fee. Shopify’s comparison says SiteGround hosting is no longer PCI compliant; verify compliance responsibilities for the specific product and payment flow you plan to use. |
| Hosting.com | Shopify’s comparison, which calls it formerly A2 Hosting, describes SSL, an uptime commitment, storage, and PHP platform support. | The comparison’s pricing is promotional, so check current prices, renewal terms, and plan limits directly. |
| GoDaddy | Shopify’s comparison describes WordPress installation, security, apps, and global data centers. | The comparison says growing stores may need a plan upgrade. Check upgrade costs and the limits that trigger one. |
| HostGator | Shopify’s comparison lists ecommerce plans, product capacity, and support. | Confirm current plan-level features, product limits, support terms, and renewal pricing before choosing. |
Shopify’s article also includes DreamHost and InMotion Hosting. Their omission here is a scope choice to match this seven-provider title, not evidence that they are inferior.
Which hosting is good for ecommerce?
For a store owner who wants the host to manage more of the commerce platform and infrastructure, compare hosted platforms such as Shopify with SiteGround’s separate hosted-store product. For a merchant who wants a WordPress-based store and is prepared to manage more of the stack, compare WooCommerce hosting options such as Bluehost, IONOS, Hosting.com, GoDaddy, and HostGator. The right answer depends on the store’s technical resources, business model, traffic, and growth plans—not a vendor’s “best” label.
What to compare before choosing
Operational responsibility
Write down who handles platform updates, server maintenance, backups, and recovery if something fails. A hosted service takes on more of this work; a self-managed WooCommerce store leaves more decisions and maintenance to you. Confirm exactly what each plan includes rather than assuming every provider manages the same tasks.

Rank #3
Security and payment responsibilities
Check SSL, security updates, backups, payment processing, and incident response for the exact product and plan. PCI responsibilities depend on the merchant’s payment setup; a hosting plan alone should not be treated as proof that the merchant’s complete payment flow is compliant. This distinction matters particularly when comparing SiteGround’s web hosting with its separate hosted-store product, or interpreting Shopify’s compliance claims.
Capacity and resilience
Match storage, bandwidth, traffic handling, caching or CDN support, uptime terms, and upgrade paths to your catalog and expected traffic. Treat vendor claims such as “unlimited” in the context of the plan’s other restrictions. A provider’s uptime commitment is a vendor claim, not an independently audited comparison of actual availability.
Rank #4
Total cost over the billing cycle
Compare the full cost for the term you need, not just an introductory monthly figure. Include the renewal price, platform or payment fees, extensions, migration, backups, and paid security or support add-ons. For concrete examples, Bluehost lists $14.99 per month on a 36-month Ecommerce Essentials term and $21.99 per month at renewal, excluding VAT/GST; SiteGround lists $18 per month prepaid for 12 months and $18 per month at renewal for its Sell plan, plus a 3% platform fee. These are figures on official provider pages accessed October 8, 2026; availability and checkout totals may vary by country, currency, taxes, and promotion.
Control, support, and growth
More control can mean more technical work. Before committing, check support hours and channels, migration assistance, staging options, the support tier included, and what happens to costs and limits as your store grows. A low entry price is a poor fit if the store quickly needs a more expensive plan or paid add-ons.

How to choose the right provider
- Choose the operating model. Decide whether you want a hosted commerce platform or a separately hosted application such as WooCommerce.
- List your must-haves. Specify catalog size, expected traffic, payment method, security needs, integrations, and any customization requirements.
- Compare like with like. For each candidate, review the exact product and plan, included maintenance and backups, storage and traffic terms, support, payment responsibilities, and upgrade path.
- Calculate the full-term cost. Use the checkout price for your location and billing term, then include renewal, platform or payment fees, and likely add-ons.
- Verify current terms before purchase. Provider plans and promotions change; confirm prices, limits, and compliance-related responsibilities on the official product page and checkout.
How to read provider rankings and prices
Shopify’s December 2025 article is a vendor-authored comparison, and Shopify is one of the products it recommends. Its ratings, “best” labels, feature descriptions, and prices should be read as that publisher’s view, not as independent test results. Its displayed prices may be promotional and may have changed. BigCommerce’s 2026 guide is also commercially interested. No independent market statistic establishes that one of these seven providers is best overall.
The official Bluehost and SiteGround price examples above were accessed October 8, 2026. Prices can vary with geography, currency, tax, billing term, and promotion, and should be confirmed at checkout. For every provider, verify plan-level features and renewal rates before purchase.
