For remote pair programming, the right tool depends on how you want to collaborate: edit the same code together, share control of one person’s screen, work inside a multiplayer editor, or start with a prepared cloud environment. These seven options cover those approaches—but they are not seven equivalent, standalone co-editors. In particular, GitHub Codespaces needs a collaboration layer such as Live Share, CodeTogether’s browser option is a way to use CodeTogether rather than a separate product, and JetBrains Code With Me is being phased out.
Compare the collaboration models first
| Option | How collaboration works | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Visual Studio Live Share | Guests join a shared session to edit, debug, and use selected shared resources. | Pairing across supported editors, mentoring, interviews, and collaborative debugging. |
| CodeTogether | Live collaboration across supported IDEs, with browser joining. | Teams whose developers use different IDEs, or guests who should join in a browser. |
| Tuple | Audio/video, screen sharing, and remote control. | Pairs who prefer to work through one person’s screen rather than shared code buffers. |
| Zed | Multiplayer collaboration built into the editor. | Teams ready to use Zed as their coding environment. |
| GitHub Codespaces + Live Share | Codespaces supplies the development environment; Live Share supplies the collaboration session. | Pairs who want a consistent cloud environment and shared editing. |
| JetBrains Code With Me | Collaborative sessions in supported JetBrains IDE releases. | Existing users planning a transition, not teams choosing a new long-term default. |
| CodeTogether in browser or anonymous mode | Guests join a CodeTogether session through a browser; this is a use mode, not a separate product. | Low-friction guest participation, subject to current access and plan restrictions. |
1. Visual Studio Live Share: shared editing and debugging
Live Share lets participants work in a shared coding session while retaining their own editor settings and cursors. Microsoft documents collaborative editing and debugging, shared terminals and localhost applications, and browser joining. It identifies pair programming, interviews, mentoring, code review, and mob programming as use cases. If a session needs more participants, Microsoft says the increased guest limit setting allows up to 30 guests. See Microsoft’s Live Share documentation and its collaboration use cases.
The lifecycle caveat matters: Microsoft states that Live Share is in maintenance mode, with no additional features planned. It remains an option for its existing capabilities, but teams choosing tools for future feature development should weigh that status. Microsoft’s Live Share FAQ has further details.
2. CodeTogether: live collaboration across IDEs
CodeTogether’s documentation describes real-time collaboration among developers using Eclipse, IntelliJ, VS Code, and related IDEs. Participants can also join through a browser. That cross-IDE approach can be useful when a pair cannot or does not want to standardize on one editor. The current site also presents a broader engineering productivity platform, so check the current product packaging and plan terms before selecting it specifically for live pair programming. The vendor’s CodeTogether site describes its current offering.

3. Tuple: pair through screen share and remote control
Tuple is purpose-built for remote pairing, combining screen sharing, remote control, and audio/video. This model keeps one developer’s screen at the center of the session rather than relying on synchronized code buffers. It may suit pairs who want to talk through changes and hand over control as they work.
Tuple says its audio, video, and screen-share data are end-to-end encrypted and not sent to Tuple’s servers; that is the vendor’s description of its data handling, not an independent audit. Its product page advertises streaming up to 5K and a 14-day trial; those are vendor claims, not independent performance results. Tuple’s pairing page names macOS and Windows, while its homepage notes a Linux alpha, so check current platform availability before adopting it. Details are on Tuple’s product page.

4. Zed: multiplayer in the editor
Zed builds multiplayer collaboration into its code editor. That can simplify the workflow for a team willing to use Zed as its shared environment; it is less suitable if the central requirement is to collaborate across everyone’s existing IDEs. Zed’s pricing page lists Personal as free, Pro at $10 per month, and Business at $30 per seat per month. These are the prices listed on the page when accessed in 2026; verify current pricing before purchase. Zed says Business adds organization-level AI and data-sharing controls, while SSO, SAML, and SCIM are planned rather than currently available. Check the Zed pricing page for current plan and feature details.
5. GitHub Codespaces plus Live Share: pair in a cloud environment
Codespaces provides configured remote development environments that open in a browser or desktop VS Code. GitHub documents using Live Share from a VS Code codespace for pairing. The distinction is important: Codespaces prepares and hosts the environment; Live Share provides the collaboration session. Codespaces alone should not be treated as a synchronized pair editor.

This combination is worth considering when getting both developers onto the same project setup is as important as editing together. GitHub’s pricing depends on plan and usage, so there is no single price that applies to every user. Start with the Codespaces overview and check GitHub’s pricing page for the applicable terms.
6. JetBrains Code With Me: plan a migration
Code With Me is a transition case, not a sensible new long-term default. JetBrains announced its sunset on March 16, 2026. IDE 2026.1 is the last release officially supporting it, and JetBrains says no new features will be developed. The transition period is scheduled to run through Q1 2027, when public relay infrastructure is set to shut down. Existing users should plan a move before that cutoff rather than build a new workflow around the feature. JetBrains’ Code With Me documentation covers the status and transition.

JetBrains remote development is not the same as simultaneous collaborative editing, so it should not be treated as a direct replacement without checking whether it meets the team’s workflow.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. CodeTogether’s browser and anonymous modes: an easier guest entry
This is a distinct way to use CodeTogether, not a seventh standalone product. Its documentation says participants can join from a browser and that free plans, including anonymous use, are available. That can reduce setup friction for a short debugging session, interview, or occasional guest pairing. Confirm the current access rules and plan restrictions before relying on anonymous access. Current product details are on CodeTogether’s site.

How to choose for your pairing workflow
Choose based on how you need to work together
- Shared code and joint debugging: Compare Live Share and CodeTogether, then check IDE support, guest access, and lifecycle needs.
- One shared screen with handoffs: Consider Tuple if screen sharing, remote control, and built-in audio/video suit the pair.
- One editor for the team: Consider Zed if adopting its editor is acceptable and its current plan features meet your requirements.
- A consistent project setup: Use Codespaces for the environment and pair it with Live Share for shared collaboration.
- An existing Code With Me workflow: Treat the announced end date and supported IDE version as migration constraints.
Check the practical constraints
Before standardizing, check editor compatibility, browser access, platform support, environment setup, shared debugging or terminal needs, session size, and the data shared with the service. For policy-sensitive work, review the vendor’s current security and administrative documentation rather than assuming that a collaboration feature’s presence answers data-handling questions.
The best fit can also change with the session. A short bug investigation may prioritize a quick guest link; recurring mentoring may benefit from shared editing and independent navigation; onboarding may favor a consistent development environment. Microsoft’s guidance on collaboration use cases highlights task scope, session duration, participant count and roles, and distance as relevant factors. There is no neutral, directly comparable productivity benchmark established for these tools, so choose based on workflow and verified requirements rather than promotional productivity claims.
