To get AI to write shorter, give it a specific job, a concrete length or format, and a clear idea of what information must stay. If a draft is already too long, ask for a focused cut rather than starting over. These six prompt techniques work across AI writing tools; the exact controls and results vary by product and model.
1. State the job and audience
A broad request such as “Write about password managers” leaves the AI to decide what matters, who the answer is for, and how much background to include. Narrow the task by naming the reader and the intended use.
For example: “Explain how to choose a password manager for a family that shares devices. Focus on the practical decision, not the history of password security.” The clearer target gives the model less reason to wander.
OpenAI’s prompting guidance recommends clear instructions, relevant context, and specified tone or style. This applies to the prompt itself—not as a guarantee that every model will produce the same length.

2. Set a concrete length and shape
Tell the model how long the response should be and what form it should take. Choose a limit that fits the job: a word count for a short explanation, a sentence count for a summary, or a bullet count for a quick list.
Try: “In about 100 words, give me three bullets for a busy reader.” That combines a length target with a scannable format. For a more exact need, specify a maximum, such as “Use no more than 80 words.”
OpenAI Academy recommends constraints such as word counts and scannable structures. Its writing guidance also suggests short paragraphs and headings when they suit the task. OpenAI’s API prompt-generation documentation treats length and syntax as parts of the expected output format.

3. Ask for the useful version, not a speech
Length limits help, but so does explaining what kind of answer you want. Ask for plain language, short paragraphs, and only the information needed to accomplish the task. You might say: “Explain the setting in plain language. Include what it changes and when I should use it; skip the general introduction.”
This is especially useful when a strict word count would make the answer awkward. The model still has to judge what is relevant, so review the result for missing steps or necessary caveats.
4. Give it something to edit
If you have notes or an overlong draft, provide that material and ask for a shorter version. Editing a specific text gives the model a defined starting point instead of asking it to invent both the content and the scope.

For example: “Shorten the draft below for a customer email. Keep the explanation of the outage and the requested next step. Remove repetition and unnecessary background.” OpenAI Academy recommends supplying a starting point when possible and describes revision as a way to improve clarity, flow, tone, and length.
5. Say what must survive the cut
“Make this shorter” does not tell the model what it is allowed to remove. Identify the essentials: a key fact, deadline, requested action, warning, or tone. This gives the edit a clearer purpose.
For instance: “Cut this announcement to 120 words. Keep the launch date, the affected customers, and the support link; keep the tone reassuring.” Then check that those details remain accurate in the revision. Explicit priorities help guide the edit, but do not assume a model will preserve every detail or nuance perfectly.

6. Give focused feedback on the next pass
If the first response is still too long, name the specific change you want instead of repeating “shorter.” OpenAI’s Help Center describes prompting as an iterative conversation, and OpenAI Academy recommends focused revision feedback.
Try: “Cut this to 80 words. Keep the deadline and next step, and remove repeated context.” If the result becomes too compressed, ask for one targeted addition, such as a sentence explaining a technical term. Review each pass for omissions and factual changes.

Prompt instructions are the most portable option: you can request brevity, a word count, or a format in ordinary language. Product-level controls differ, and a setting documented for one model or API should not be assumed to exist in another chatbot.

It says explicit instructions take precedence if they conflict with that parameter. This is a GPT-5 API feature, not a universal control available in every ChatGPT interface or AI product. Anthropic’s prompting best practices also cover communication style and verbosity, with guidance that can vary by model.
There is no measured percentage in these cited guidance pages showing how much shorter these techniques make an answer. Treat them as practical ways to communicate the desired scope, not as a guaranteed output-length formula.
