These six tips show where to find each setting; availability can vary by country or region.
1. Change the map view and display on Mac
Choose the view that fits the task using the view control in Maps. Explore is the general map; Driving emphasizes roads and traffic; Transit shows transit lines, stops, stations, and airports; Satellite uses imagery. Satellite can also display labels or traffic overlays where available. See Apple’s Mac map appearance guide.
For additional display controls, open Maps > Settings > General. You can use dark map colors, enlarge labels, and choose the preferred label language. The view options also let you show traffic and a distance scale. Traffic colors indicate conditions: yellow means slowdowns and red means stop-and-go traffic. Apple documents these controls in Maps settings on Mac.
2. Organize saved places into guides
Use a guide when you want to group places for a trip, neighborhood, or another purpose instead of keeping every saved location in one collection. Apple Support describes the feature this way: “You can organize places into your own guides for easy reference, and you can share your guides with others.”

On iPhone
- Open Maps and go to Your Guides.
- Tap Add to List to create a guide, enter a name, and optionally choose a cover image.
- To add a location, open its place card from the map or a search result, tap More, then choose Add to Guides.
- Open the guide to edit it, remove places, or share it. Favorites is available as a guide by default.

On Mac
Maps for Mac also supports custom guides with names and cover images. You can sort a guide’s places by date, name, or distance, and share the guide. Apple says Mac guides are end-to-end encrypted and cannot be read by Apple. See Apple’s Mac custom-guides instructions.

3. Set a default travel mode and map units on iPhone
If you usually travel the same way, set Maps to default to driving, walking, transit, or cycling rather than changing the mode each time. Open Settings > Apps > Maps and look for Preferred Type of Travel or the travel-mode preference shown on your iPhone. Available mode-specific options can include avoiding heavy traffic or hills, or choosing preferred transit methods. Labels and available choices may differ by iOS version and region.
Map measurement units follow a separate system setting: go to Settings > General > Language & Region > Measurement System and choose the units you prefer. Apple documents both controls in its iPhone travel mode and Maps units guide.

4. Tailor a route on Mac
After entering a destination and getting directions in Maps, use Options to adapt a route to the trip. Depending on the travel mode and region, driving options can include avoiding tolls, highways, hills, or busy roads; walking options can include avoiding stairs. Transit preferences may let you choose vehicle types such as bus, rail, or ferry.
To use the controls, request directions, select the relevant travel mode, open Options, and turn on the preference you want before reviewing the route. The available choices depend on mode and local support, so an option listed in Apple’s Mac directions guide may not appear for every trip. Maps for Mac can also plan a driving route with multiple stops and open the directions on iPhone; Apple describes this in the Maps User Guide for Mac.

5. Download and manage offline maps on iPhone
Offline maps can help when you expect limited connectivity, but download availability varies by country or region. To start a download, either touch and hold the desired area on the map and tap Download, or open your profile or initials, choose Offline Maps, then add a map and select its area.
In Offline Maps, you can resize or rename a download, allow downloads over cellular, enable automatic updates, turn on Optimize Storage to remove maps you are not using, or delete a map manually. These controls are described in Apple’s iPhone offline maps guide.

6. Search naturally and make scale easier to read
Maps accepts natural-language requests as well as place names. Apple’s iPhone guide gives “Find cafes with free Wi-Fi” as a sample query; results depend on the information Maps has for the area. See Use Maps on iPhone.
For distance context, Mac users can show the map’s distance scale in the view options. On iPhone, choose the measurement system under Settings > General > Language & Region > Measurement System to set the units used for map scale.
