The six practices below, drawn from Marketing Herald’s September 28, 2026 account of a roundtable involving leaders from Snowflake, Datadog, and Unisys, show how teams can coordinate target accounts, turn signals into useful sales actions, and apply AI without mistaking speed for quality.
Why sales and marketing alignment needs ongoing work
Marketing Herald reports that Forrester’s 2024 Sales and Marketing Alignment Survey found 65% of sales and marketing professionals said their organizations’ sales and marketing leaders lacked alignment, while 82% of C-level executives believed their teams were in sync. These figures are secondhand: Marketing Herald reported them, and the original survey was not available for independent review. The gap they describe is a practical warning for ABM teams: leaders may believe they agree while account-level execution tells a different story.
The roundtable’s shared framing, as reported by Marketing Herald, is that alignment “is an operating discipline run every week.” In practice, that means maintaining shared account choices, coordinating work over time, and giving sellers recommendations they can act on—not treating ABM as a campaign followed by a single marketing-qualified lead handoff.
1. Agree on the account list before launch
Start by comparing the accounts sales is actively pursuing in the CRM with marketing’s target-account list. Resolve mismatches with sales leadership before campaigns go live, and document the shared ideal customer profile (ICP), the decision-makers involved, and who can change the list.

#1 Best Overall
Marketing Herald’s roundtable account proposes reconciling lists within the first two weeks. Treat that as an operational recommendation, not a universal benchmark or guaranteed timeline. Reopen the discussion when leadership, strategy, or account assignments change; otherwise, campaigns can keep targeting accounts that sellers no longer own or prioritize.
2. Replace the handoff with a relay
Marketing can prepare an account before asking sales to take the next step. That may include researching the buying committee, engaging executives, and running relevant programs. When the account is ready for sales involvement, provide a compact package that explains what has happened and what the rep could do next.
- Work completed: relevant campaigns, executive engagement, and known interactions.
- Current signals: meaningful engagement or account changes, with enough context to interpret them.
- Recommended next step: a specific, practical action such as contacting a particular stakeholder or following up on a relevant initiative.
Frame the package as useful guidance, not another task request. The goal is continuity: marketing and sales advance the account together rather than passing an under-explained lead across a departmental boundary.
3. Turn signals into actions, not data dumps
Separate signals that help choose accounts from signals that suggest what to do now. Account-fit signals help determine which accounts belong in the program and how much effort to invest. Action signals—observable activity tied to a person or company initiative—can help sales decide whom to contact and when.
| Signal type | What it helps answer | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Account fit | Is this account a good match for the ICP, and what investment level makes sense? | Use it for selection and prioritization. |
| Action signal | Is there a timely reason to engage, and which stakeholder or initiative matters? | Use it to recommend a next step, with context. |
Marketing Herald’s account identifies first-party engagement, third-party intent, campaign performance, whitespace analysis, and relevant contract timing as inputs teams can combine. A single intent signal is weak evidence, not proof that an account is ready to buy. Translate the combined evidence into a prioritized recommendation for the rep instead of forwarding a raw feed and asking sales to do the analysis.
4. Sell the support, not the tier
Sellers are more likely to engage when marketing explains how it will help with their must-win accounts than when it leads with an internal program label such as “1:few.” Use a revenue-linked scoring rubric to guide resource allocation, and leave some capacity for strategic bets that may not rise to the top of a formula. Agree on the trade-offs with sales leadership.
The underlying test is whether investment maps to account potential and seller priorities. A tier can organize work internally, but the offer to sales should be concrete: what support will the account receive, and how does that support advance a shared pipeline or revenue goal?
5. Put enablement where reps already work
Learn how sellers actually manage their day before choosing where to deliver account information. Marketing Herald notes that reps may work primarily in email while marketing teams rely on Slack or Teams. A brief that is hard to find or use can fail even if the underlying analysis is sound.
A concise account brief should give the rep a wider view than the latest lead alone. Depending on what the team can establish, include known contacts, partner footprint, recent leads and events, relevant intent, whitespace, recommended stakeholders, and a suggested cadence. If AI assembles the brief, have a person check the information and recommendations before sending them to sales.

Marketing Herald attributes several practical AI uses to the roundtable participants: faster dashboard creation, data movement, and campaign launches, as well as a Snowflake tool that analyzes sales calls to suggest personalized gifts. These examples point to operational speed and personalization workflows, not a guarantee that AI-generated campaigns will perform better.
The roundtable account also reports Unisys warning that producing campaigns faster does not ensure better work. Check dashboard calculations, review generated content, and preserve account-specific insight; otherwise, speed can produce errors or messaging that feels interchangeable. Use time saved to expand one-to-one work, improve messages, or reach accounts through more relevant channels.
Snowflake’s own 2025 account provides context-specific examples, not industry benchmarks. The company reported a 2.3x lift in meetings booked in high-potential accounts compared with lower-potential accounts, and 38% less spending while generating more engagement and meetings in the right accounts. It also reported a 54% click-through-rate lift for AI-generated creative against original copy in its campaign tests. These are Snowflake-reported results from its own model and program; they should not be treated as forecasts for other teams.

Evaluate the shared account program against outcomes that matter to both functions, such as pipeline or revenue, rather than relying on campaign activity volume alone. Where possible, compare results with a suitable group or baseline and make the comparison clear. A rise in clicks or campaign launches is not, by itself, evidence that the operating model improved business outcomes.
Snowflake’s 2021 ABM guide, written by CMO Denise Persson, describes highly strategic one-to-one, strategic one-to-few, and buyer-led one-to-few approaches. It also describes involving ABM, field marketing, partner marketing, sales development, and field sales in appropriate combinations. These are implementation examples from a 2021 company guide, not a current endorsement of a particular approach or vendor.
