There isn’t an Amazon-documented set of six Kindle features that are disabled by default and right for every owner. Sync, for example, is already on by default, while other controls vary by device, app, and book. Treat these as six settings and reading aids to review—not a universal checklist—and enable the ones that suit how and where you read.
1. Text display and themes on Kindle e-readers
Open a book and tap the Aa or page-display menu to adjust the reading view. Depending on the Kindle model, options can include font and size, boldness, line spacing, margins, orientation, alignment, background, themes, and reading progress. Amazon notes that available settings vary by model, and display preferences can carry across books. Choose what feels comfortable rather than treating one combination as best for everyone. Amazon’s text-display guide describes the controls.
2. Sync across Kindle devices and apps
If you read on more than one linked Kindle device or app, Sync can keep your reading position, notes, and highlights available across them when they are connected to the internet. Amazon says Sync is enabled by default, so this is a setting to check rather than an off-by-default feature.
Turning Sync off limits cross-device continuity and can affect some notes, highlights, sharing, and export functions. Amazon also warns that notes made while Sync is off may be lost when it is turned back on. Review the trade-off in Amazon’s Sync settings guidance before changing it.

3. VoiceView on supported Kindle e-readers
VoiceView is a screen reader for readers who benefit from spoken menus and reading support. It is an accessibility option, not a general upgrade everyone needs. Check Amazon’s Kindle e-reader accessibility information and the setup guidance for the 2026 Kindle release to confirm compatibility and audio setup for your device.
4. Assistive Reader and text highlighting in Kindle apps
Kindle reading apps offer accessibility options that include Assistive Reader and real-time text highlighting. These are app features, not settings guaranteed to exist on every Kindle e-reader or app platform. Check the options available in the app you use and enable them if they support your reading needs. Amazon’s accessible reading options for Kindle apps outline the app-specific aids.

5. Reading Ruler in supported Kindle apps
The Reading Ruler places a colored guide over text to help readers follow a line. It is an optional visual aid documented for Kindle reading apps; do not assume it appears on every platform or e-reader. Look in the reading or accessibility options of your app to see whether it is available.
6. Word Wise where the app and book support it
Word Wise can show inline definitions and synonyms to help with unfamiliar vocabulary. Amazon’s app guidance identifies it for Android, but that does not establish support on every device or title. Check for the Word Wise control in your app and book before relying on it.

When a Kindle setting does not work as expected
Not every book supports the same reading controls. Fixed-layout and Print Replica titles can have limits, including cases where text resizing or screen-reader support is unavailable. If a display or accessibility option appears ineffective, try it with a reflowable book that supports the feature before assuming the Kindle setting is broken. Amazon’s format comparison explains some of these format differences.
