1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSix services offer documented ways to route around regional or origin failures, but they do not all replace the same part of Fastly’s request path. Cloudflare Load Balancing, Google Cloud Load Balancing, and Azure Front Door provide global HTTP routing patterns; Amazon CloudFront supports primary-to-secondary origin failover; Azure Traffic Manager routes through DNS; and Akamai Global Traffic Management steers traffic between endpoints. Choose based on what must fail over—an origin, a region, or the delivery service itself—and test the full application path.
Why this list has six options, not seven
The available first-party documentation substantiates six services across five provider ecosystems. That is not enough evidence to name a seventh option responsibly, so this guide does not invent one to match the original “7 alternatives” count. The six services also are not six interchangeable CDNs: some deliver cached content, some route requests to regional backends, and some provide DNS-based traffic steering.
These capabilities make them candidates for particular parts of a Fastly-style delivery architecture, not proof that each is a like-for-like Fastly replacement. Product fit depends on the workload, protocols, existing edge stack, and the failure you need to survive.
Compare the six services by the job they do
| Service | Documented role | Documented failure or routing behavior | Protocol or scope established in the cited documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Load Balancing | Traffic distribution across endpoints | Routes across healthy endpoints; supports steering by latency, visitor geography, or GPS coordinates, with active monitoring from multiple data centers. | Cloudflare describes routing across AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, and on-premises servers. The documentation cited here does not state a universal failover time. |
| Amazon CloudFront origin failover | Primary/secondary origin failover for a distribution | An origin group switches to its secondary origin if the primary is unavailable or returns configured failure status codes. | Origin failover for a CloudFront distribution. This does not establish independent failover between CDN providers. |
| Google Cloud Load Balancing | Global proxy load balancing | Can direct traffic to failover backends when primary backends become unhealthy. | Google documents a global external Application Load Balancer and classic Application Load Balancer with a single anycast frontend; Cloud CDN is supported with both types. |
| Azure Front Door | Global HTTP load balancing and CDN | Routes among origins using health probes and routing configuration; origin priorities support active-passive regional deployments. | HTTP/HTTPS, according to Microsoft’s Front Door FAQ and product documentation. |
| Azure Traffic Manager | DNS-based traffic routing | Returns an endpoint IP through DNS resolution; failover timing depends on DNS TTL. | Microsoft describes it as supporting multiple regions and any protocol. Its documented typical DNS TTL range is 30–300 seconds; this is a TTL range, not a guaranteed end-to-end recovery time. |
| Akamai Global Traffic Management (GTM) | Policy-based traffic steering | Supports failover, weighted balancing, and performance-aware mapping. | Documentation supports its role as global traffic management. The cited material does not establish GTM alone as a like-for-like CDN replacement. |
The service descriptions above reflect vendor documentation, not independent comparative tests. The reviewed documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples winner for latency, availability, or price.

For routing across cloud providers or on-premises endpoints
Cloudflare Load Balancing is a candidate when you want traffic distribution across endpoints in different hosting environments. Cloudflare documents health-based routing and steering by latency or visitor location. Those are product capabilities, not independent proof of how quickly a particular application will recover. Validate monitoring locations, health-check settings, and the behavior of your own origins.
For primary-to-secondary origins behind CloudFront
CloudFront origin groups address a narrower, concrete case: a distribution can use a primary origin and switch to a secondary when the primary is unavailable or returns a status code you configure for failover. This can suit an application already delivered through CloudFront. It is not, by itself, a documented solution for switching users to another CDN provider if CloudFront is unavailable.

For global HTTP routing with Google Cloud
Google Cloud Load Balancing is a candidate when a global proxy load balancer should steer traffic among regional backends. Google documents a single anycast frontend and automatic multi-region failover to failover backends when primary backends become unhealthy. The overview warns that users far from the surviving region may see higher latency during failover. Cloud CDN is supported with Google’s global external and classic Application Load Balancers, but the specific load-balancer type and CDN configuration still need to match your design.
For global web delivery in an Azure environment
Azure Front Door combines global load balancing and CDN capabilities for HTTP/HTTPS traffic. It can route among origins in active-active or active-passive deployments, using health probes and routing configuration. Microsoft’s FAQ describes setting origin priority for an active-passive regional setup, which makes Front Door a candidate for Azure-oriented web workloads.

For DNS routing across regions or protocols
Azure Traffic Manager is distinct from Front Door: it routes through DNS resolution rather than acting as an edge CDN. Microsoft documents it for multi-region routing with any protocol. Its typical DNS TTL is 30–300 seconds, but that range should not be read as a promise that every client will move to a healthy endpoint within that interval; resolver caching and client behavior affect what users experience.
For traffic steering within an Akamai architecture
Akamai GTM documents policy-based steering for websites and IP applications, including failover, weighted distribution, and performance-aware mapping. Treat it as a traffic-management option. The cited documentation does not establish GTM alone as a replacement for CDN delivery, so confirm which Akamai delivery service is needed for your application.

Choose the right failover layer before comparing vendors
Start by stating the failure you need to withstand. Regional origin failure, a cloud-provider outage, and failure of the CDN or traffic manager itself are different problems. A regional load balancer or origin group may handle the first without protecting against the third.
- Origin or backend failure: A health-based global load balancer or an origin-failover feature may direct requests to another backend.
- Regional failure: Confirm that another region is deployed, has enough capacity, and can serve the application’s dependencies—not only that traffic can be redirected there.
- Delivery-service failure: Plan an alternate ingress path if the edge service itself is within the failure scenario. Microsoft’s high-availability guidance describes an alternate-ingress architecture using Traffic Manager and another CDN or Application Gateway.
When evaluating that Azure alternate-ingress pattern, note Microsoft’s warning: Traffic Manager health probes originate only from US Azure regions. Probes against an anycast CDN endpoint may therefore fail to represent health from users worldwide. For the global monitoring situation described in its guidance, Microsoft recommends manual failover controls. The guide also contrasts a caching CDN with a non-caching Application Gateway fallback, a difference that can affect origin load and response behavior.

Compare health checks, failover behavior, and operating costs
Before choosing a service, answer these questions for the complete request path. A green edge probe is only evidence that the probed path worked from that probe’s location; it does not prove every geography or application dependency is healthy.
- What is being checked? Use a health endpoint that exercises the functions needed to serve a real request, while avoiding checks so broad that a minor dependency causes unnecessary failover.
- Where do probes run? Check whether probe locations represent your user regions. Account for anycast behavior, geography, and regional routing.
- What triggers a switch? Confirm whether routing reacts to backend health, selected HTTP status codes, or DNS endpoint monitoring. For CloudFront, identify the failure status codes configured on the origin group.
- How long will users notice? Origin retries, health-check detection, connection-level routing, and DNS caching work differently. Do not treat DNS TTL as a universal recovery-time guarantee; measure with your own resolver mix, client retries, and geography.
- What happens to cache and origin load? A different route may have a different cache hit rate. A cold or non-caching fallback can push more traffic to origins, so verify that the surviving region can handle the resulting load.
- What happens during failback? Specify when traffic returns to the preferred region, how operators approve the change, and how to avoid oscillation if a region is unstable.
- Can the standby path serve the whole application? Check certificates, WAF policies, routing rules, logs, application state, data replication, and dependencies in both normal and failover operation.
- What will failover cost? Estimate the cost of running standby capacity and serving the displaced traffic at failover load. The vendor documentation reviewed here does not establish comparable pricing for these workloads.
Plan a failover test that checks more than routing
A traffic manager can route successfully while the application still fails because the alternate region lacks capacity, current state, or a working certificate. Test the full user journey, not just the routing control plane.
- Draw the request path. Mark the DNS provider, edge or CDN service, traffic manager, regional origins, state stores, and health endpoint. Identify which component detects each failure.
- Define a failure scenario. Decide whether the drill simulates an unhealthy origin, a lost region, or loss of the edge or routing service. Do not treat one scenario as evidence for the others.
- Exercise the configured trigger. For health-based services, take a backend through the health-check failure condition. For CloudFront, test the configured origin-group failure behavior. For DNS routing, verify endpoint monitoring and observe the result using representative resolvers.
- Measure from relevant locations. Record detection, route change, client-visible recovery, error rates, and latency from the geographies and networks your users rely on.
- Check the alternate path under load. Verify capacity, data availability, cache behavior, certificates, WAF rules, and application functions while traffic is on the surviving path.
- Practice failback and operator steps. Follow the runbook to return traffic, check that the original region is stable, and confirm that alerts, logs, and approvals work as intended.
Microsoft’s high-availability guidance specifically calls for testing failure modes and alternate-ingress activation. For any provider, a controlled drill is the way to determine how its documented feature behaves with your application, configuration, and users.
Make the shortlist by workload, not by a universal ranking
For cross-cloud endpoint steering, evaluate Cloudflare Load Balancing. For primary-secondary origin fallback on an existing CloudFront distribution, evaluate CloudFront origin groups. For global proxy routing with Google Cloud, assess Google Cloud Load Balancing and its Cloud CDN integration. For Azure HTTP/HTTPS delivery, assess Front Door; for DNS-based multi-region routing across protocols, assess Traffic Manager. For policy-based steering within an Akamai architecture, assess GTM alongside the delivery service your workload needs.
