There is no single “best” dunning tool for every Stripe SaaS business—and the available public pricing does not prove that a particular low-cost price band is unserved. What it does show is a meaningful spread in how tools charge: Stripe bills by Billing volume, some tools charge a monthly subscription, Chargebee Retention has an eligibility-limited free tier, Baremetrics Recover is an add-on, and Butter Payments uses an unpublished revenue share.
Before paying for another service, check what Stripe Billing already does for failed payments. Then compare tools by the work they actually handle—retries, customer outreach, payment recovery flows, or cancellation saves—not by headline recovery claims.
Start with the failed-payment features you already have in Stripe
Stripe Billing offers Smart Retries, failed-payment reminders, hosted recovery links, automatic card updates, and configurable recovery automations. Stripe says Smart Retries have helped businesses recover 57% of recurring payments that originally failed; that is Stripe’s own reported average, not a guarantee or a result directly comparable with other vendors. See Stripe Billing.
Check whether those features are enabled and how they perform against your own failed-payment cases before adding a separate subscription. A dedicated service may still be useful if you need customer messaging, in-app payment prompts, cancellation flows, or another recovery capability that your current setup does not cover.

How the six tools differ in price and scope
The figures below reflect public information reported in the cited sources, not hands-on product tests. Stripe’s prices come from its pricing page accessed October 5, 2026. The other vendors’ figures come from a vendor-authored comparison that reports competitor details using vendor-published information as of September 2026; confirm live prices, eligibility, limits, and features before buying.
| Tool | What it covers | Public price reported | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe Billing | Smart Retries, reminder emails, hosted recovery page, expired-card updates, recovery automations, and cancellation surveys. | Pay-as-you-go at 0.7% of Billing volume, or annual contract with monthly pricing starting at $620/month. | Stripe’s pricing page says pay-as-you-go covers transactions processed on and off Stripe and excludes one-off invoices. Billing charges are distinct from payment-processing fees; check the plan scope at Stripe Pricing & Fees. |
| Churn Buster | Dedicated dunning and cancellation flows, email and SMS; the comparison describes adaptive campaigns and Stripe do-not-retry handling. | $269/month for Dunning or Cancel Flows, or $430/month for both, for up to $150,000 MRR. | Prices and included services are reported by the vendor-authored comparison; verify the current tier and limits. |
| Churnkey | SaaS-focused payment recovery and cancellation flows, including recovery email sequences and an in-app payment wall. | Starter: $250/month when billed annually or $300/month month to month. | The reported Starter tier applies to under $5,000 in monthly churn volume. Confirm the current threshold and feature tier. |
| Chargebee Retention | Cancellation flows, offers, and exit surveys. The comparison says retries and dunning emails reside in Chargebee Billing. | Free Starter tier for Chargebee Billing customers; custom pricing above that. | The free tier is conditional on being a Chargebee Billing customer; it is not a general-purpose free option. |
| Baremetrics Recover | Recovery add-on with email, SMS, and in-app banners or payment walls, according to the comparison. | $129/month for Recover, on top of a Baremetrics plan starting at $49/month. | The comparison notes that pricing presentation varies by page or plan. Check the current total and required base subscription. |
| Butter Payments | Payment-side recovery; its outreach product is described as email, SMS, and AI voice. | Revenue share on recovered invoices; exact price not stated in the cited comparison. | Ask for the revenue-share rate, attribution rules, and definition of a recovered invoice before comparing it with flat monthly fees. |

What “dunning” means—and what it may leave out
Dunning is often used as shorthand for recovering failed subscription payments, but products can address different parts of that job. Some control retries; others focus on customer communications or cancellation prevention. A payment-side service may address approvals or outreach in a way that is not equivalent to a retry scheduler.
- Retry management: controls when failed charges are attempted again and may coordinate with Stripe’s retry behavior.
- Customer outreach: sends reminders or prompts by email or SMS, potentially directing customers to update payment details.
- In-product recovery: uses a payment wall or banner to reach customers while they are using the app.
- Cancellation saves: presents offers, surveys, or other flows when a customer is about to cancel. This work is related to retention but is not the same as recovering a failed charge.
- Payment-side recovery: may include authorization-oriented recovery or additional outreach; ask the vendor exactly which actions it performs.
For example, the comparison describes Chargebee Retention as handling cancellation flows while Chargebee Billing handles retries and dunning emails. Treating the retention product as a full replacement for a retry system would therefore misstate its described scope.

How to choose a tool for your Stripe SaaS
1. Identify the uncovered failure cases
Review your existing setup and identify where recovery is breaking down: retry policy, expired cards, customers missing email reminders, or a lack of an in-app update prompt. Compare each vendor against those specific gaps, rather than buying a broad “dunning” label.
2. Confirm who owns retries and messaging
Ask whether the tool schedules retries, sends communications around Stripe’s retries, or does both. Establish how it avoids duplicate charges or conflicting messages with Stripe Billing and any other subscription platform you use. Confirm support for your actual billing stack before selecting a plan.

3. Compare the billing basis, not just the lowest number
A monthly fee, a percentage of Billing volume, a paid analytics base plus recovery add-on, a conditional free tier, and a share of recovered revenue are not directly comparable. For each quote, establish what is included, how the fee scales, which customers qualify, and whether the quoted service includes onboarding or operational help.
4. Check customer experience and measurement
Match the available channels—email, SMS, hosted update flow, in-app wall, or human outreach—to how your customers are likely to respond. Ask for clear definitions and reporting for payments retried, recovered after a card update, canceled, or passively churned. The cited comparison notes measurement differences for Churn Buster but does not provide common measurement methods across all six tools.

5. Model your own break-even point
Use your own monthly failed-payment volume and the incremental gross margin from payments a tool actually recovers. Compare that value with the full incremental cost, including any required base plan or revenue share. There is no sound universal ROI figure here: the available sources do not establish an independent, like-for-like recovery study across these products, and vendor pricing and attribution methods differ.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the price spread does—and does not—show
The public snapshot establishes different pricing approaches: Stripe’s percentage-of-Billing-volume option, an eligible free Chargebee Retention tier, fixed-fee examples from Churn Buster and Churnkey, Baremetrics Recover on top of a paid analytics plan, and Butter Payments’ unquoted revenue share. It does not establish that no vendor serves a particular lower-cost band or that a low-priced tool would be worthwhile for a typical SaaS company.
One customer testimonial reproduced in the Churn Buster comparison offers a useful—but limited—example of why a team might choose a dedicated tool. It attributes this statement to John O’Nolan, founder and CEO of Ghost.org: “After almost 5 years using Churn Buster, we tested the latest Smart Dunning features from our subscription platform and saw a notable drop in performance. Switched back with renewed confidence.” This is a vendor-published testimonial, not an independently audited comparison.
