A CIO should use six connected dashboard views: an executive command center, workforce and headcount, employee experience, IT service operations, web-service analytics, and security and portfolio execution. They do not have to be six separate products. The goal is to connect business outcomes to reliable measures, underlying records, and accountable actions while protecting employee data.
1. CIO command-center dashboard
Make this the executive landing page, not another wall of status tiles. It should summarize the areas where technology leadership makes trade-offs: value, operations, security, execution, and experience. ServiceNow describes its CIO Dashboard as bringing together IT service management, IT operations, IT asset management, security operations, and strategic portfolio management; it can also integrate data from outside ServiceNow. Its documentation presents the dashboard as a way to prioritize and adjust investment in support of the business.
Keep the top-level view selective. A CIO should be able to move from a business outcome or exception to the relevant KPI, source record, owner, and next action. If a tile cannot be traced to its source or an action, it may be useful context, but it is not an operational control.
- Show a small set of business-relevant outcomes alongside service, risk, delivery, and experience indicators.
- Make exceptions visible, with a clear owner and a route to the underlying record or workflow.
- State the reporting period and refresh time so leaders can distinguish current conditions from delayed reporting.
2. Workforce and headcount dashboard
This view answers how many employees there are, where they work, how long they have served, and how hiring is progressing. Microsoft’s Workforce metrics Power BI content includes headcount by company, department, and location; average tenure and years of service; anniversaries and birthdays; and mass-hire projects. Microsoft’s Power BI and Dynamics materials also describe headcount planning and visibility into recruiting and retention.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Those are metric definitions and product capabilities, not an independent benchmark for an appropriate headcount, tenure, or hiring rate. Set targets using the organization’s own workforce plan and definitions rather than treating a vendor dashboard’s available fields as recommended thresholds.
- Define whether headcount means employees, full-time equivalents, or another population, and specify how contractors, leave, transfers, and open positions are handled.
- Keep recruiting pipeline measures distinct from employees already hired; show the period and stage for any hiring figure.
- Use access controls for identifiable personnel information. Executives may need aggregates by location or department, while named employee records should be limited to roles with a legitimate need.
3. Employee-experience and sentiment dashboard
Headcount describes the workforce’s size and composition; it does not show how work is experienced. Pair aggregate workforce information with signals such as collaboration patterns, meetings, wellbeing, coaching, sentiment, self-service adoption, and lifecycle events. Microsoft says Viva Insights can analyze collaboration, meetings, wellbeing, coaching, employee lifecycle data, and resilience around business transitions. ServiceNow’s Experience pillar includes end-user satisfaction, survey response rates, self-service adoption, and digital employee experience.

Interpret these measures as signals for investigation, not as a complete or objective score of an individual’s performance. Establish who can see each measure, how it is aggregated, and what decisions it may inform before collecting or presenting employee-level data.
- Pair survey results with response rates so leaders can see how representative the feedback may be.
- Use collaboration and wellbeing measures to identify broad patterns or potential friction, not to infer an individual’s intent or productivity from a single indicator.
- Track self-service adoption alongside employee satisfaction and issue outcomes; adoption alone does not establish that a service is working well.
- Apply data minimization, role-based access, and appropriate retention rules, especially when joining experience data with HR or IT records.
4. IT service-operations dashboard
This operational view helps service owners manage incidents and requests, service-level performance, problem trends, assets, staffing, and resource allocation. Tableau’s IT guidance identifies service-ticket management, asset tracking, budgeting, staffing, software monitoring, and web-portal user analytics as dashboard use cases. Its support and service offering also describes ServiceNow dashboard accelerators for incidents, problems, and resource allocation.

- In-Plane Switching (IPS): See excellent color accuracy and consistency across wide viewing angles with In-plane Switching (IPS) technology.
- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
Keep service measures tied to the service and support process they describe. For example, a ticket count is not the same as unresolved demand, and a service-level result is only interpretable when its target, measurement window, and exclusions are clear.
- Show incident and request volumes with status, age, priority, and service context where available.
- Use problem trends to expose recurring causes rather than treating each related incident as an isolated event.
- Include asset, staffing, and resource information when it helps explain capacity or remediation, while identifying the accountable service owner.
- Provide drill-through to tickets or other source records and a defined route for assigning or escalating work.
5. Web-service and digital-analytics dashboard
Join portal or web-analytics behavior to the health of the service behind it. Tableau cites web-portal user analytics and connectors for ServiceNow, Splunk, and Google Analytics. Microsoft describes Power BI integrations that combine CRM, email, and web-analytics data for performance insight. These examples show possible data connections; they do not establish that every deployment has the same connectors, refresh speed, or implementation effort.

Page views and visits describe activity, not service quality. Where the organization has the measures, interpret web behavior alongside availability, latency, incidents, satisfaction, and completed outcomes. A rise in traffic can indicate increased use, but without service-health and outcome measures it cannot show whether users successfully completed what they came to do.
- Define the portal, user population, and analytics period so that web measures have a consistent scope.
- Separate engagement signals, such as visits, from reliability measures and completed tasks.
- When a web metric changes, provide a path to related incidents or service records so an owner can investigate operational causes.
6. Security, portfolio execution, and investment dashboard
Security and delivery belong in the CIO’s decision view because risk and execution affect both service continuity and investment choices. ServiceNow’s CIO Dashboard documentation groups these areas under Security and Execution, alongside the other dashboard pillars.

Security measures
Report vulnerabilities, incident response, and compliance status with clear scope and ownership. A count without severity, affected services, status, or a route to the responsible team is difficult to act on. Define the reporting period and what is included in each measure.
Portfolio execution measures
For projects or programs, show progress, milestones, resource allocation, budget adherence, and risk indicators. Connect delivery status to the portfolio decision it informs: for example, whether a milestone needs intervention or whether a resource constraint affects another commitment.
Investment decisions
Use the combined view to make trade-offs visible, not to imply that one dashboard metric determines funding. Connect investment measures to business value and delivery evidence, and make underlying assumptions and data owners discoverable.

Compare platforms against the same decision needs rather than selecting by appearance or the number of built-in charts. A platform may provide a useful dashboard while still requiring separate data integration, governance, or workflow work.
Quick Recap
- Data integration: Check whether it can combine the HR, IT service management, observability, web analytics, finance, and portfolio sources the organization actually uses.
- Actionability: For representative KPIs, verify whether users can drill into the source record, identify an owner, and start or route a remediation workflow.
- Metric coverage: Confirm that workforce, experience, service quality, web behavior, security, and execution measures can be presented with consistent definitions rather than duplicated or conflicting versions.
- Governance and privacy: Review role-based access, data minimization, employee privacy controls, and who can see identifiable or sensitive information.
- Freshness and reliability: Make refresh schedules, data latency, lineage, and alert thresholds visible to dashboard users. A visually current dashboard is not necessarily based on current data.
- Commercial and implementation fit: Compare licensing, existing platform commitments, implementation effort, and regional availability. Verify current terms and availability directly with the vendor.
How to put the views into practice
- Start with decisions: Identify the recurring leadership and operational decisions the dashboards must support, and name the person or team responsible for each action.
- Agree on definitions: Document the population, time period, calculation, and exclusions for each metric before combining data from separate systems.
- Choose a small set of source measures: Prefer measures with identifiable owners and traceable source records; avoid creating parallel definitions of the same KPI in different views.
- Design access before joining data: Determine what should be aggregated and who may access sensitive workforce, service, or security records.
- Test the path from signal to action: Follow a sample exception from the executive view through its underlying data to the team or workflow that can respond.
- Review usefulness and quality: Check that refresh timing, ownership, and alert thresholds remain appropriate as systems and business priorities change.
