There is no single backup switch that reliably saves everything on a Samsung Galaxy. For stronger coverage, combine a cloud backup for supported phone data with a separate copy of irreplaceable photos, videos, and files. The six options below explain what each saves, where it goes, and what to check before a reset, repair, or trade-in.
Compare the six Samsung backup options
| Method | What it can save | Destination | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung Cloud | Selected Samsung phone data and settings | Samsung account cloud | Restoring supported Galaxy settings and data |
| Google device backup | Selected apps and app data, call history, contacts, settings, and messages | Google Account | Restoring supported Android device data |
| Google Photos | Photos and videos | Google Account | Keeping media accessible on signed-in devices |
| Smart Switch to computer | Supported phone data; coverage depends on source and destination | PC or Mac | Keeping a local copy or moving data to a Galaxy |
| Smart Switch to SD card | Supported phone data | Compatible SD card | Keeping a local, potentially offline copy |
| OneDrive sync | Gallery content and My Files data, where supported | Microsoft OneDrive | Samsung/Microsoft users whose device and region offer integration |
Samsung Cloud, Google device backup, and Smart Switch are not identical copies of a phone. App developers and service providers control some data, and available categories vary. For coverage of important files, verify each destination rather than assuming that one method captured everything.
1. Back up selected data with Samsung Cloud
Samsung Cloud can save supported Samsung phone data and settings to your Samsung account. On supported Galaxy phones, open Settings → Accounts and backup → Samsung Cloud → Back up data, choose the categories shown, then tap Back up now. The available categories on your device are the best guide to what this particular backup will include.
Samsung lists categories such as call and message history, device-saved contacts and calendars, clock data, selected settings, the home screen, apps, and voice recordings. Samsung Cloud sync is a separate feature: it may sync Samsung services such as Calendar, Contacts, Notes, Samsung Browser, or Wi-Fi data. Google-account contacts and calendars are not synchronized by Samsung Cloud.

To enable automatic backups, use the option on the Samsung Cloud backup screen. Samsung says the phone must be charging, have its screen off, and be connected to Wi-Fi for automatic backup. Supported content varies by model, operating system, country, and carrier; some large message files may be excluded, and Samsung says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. Samsung’s Cloud support page has further details.
2. Use Google’s Android device backup
Google’s device backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS messages. RCS messages are included when you use Google Messages. Photos and videos are handled through Google Photos rather than the device-data categories in this backup.
To check the setting, open Settings → Google → Backup; menu names can differ by phone. Confirm the Google Account and the categories shown, then start or enable the backup. Google says a device backup may take up to 24 hours to complete. Its Android Help also states that Google Accounts have 15 GB of no-charge storage shared across account use—not a separate 15 GB reserved for phone backup. More storage is available through Google One.

Coverage is not universal: Google cautions that not all apps back up or restore all settings and data. Restore options also depend on Android versions; Google warns that a backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older version. See Google’s Android backup guidance for the current details.
3. Back up photos and videos with Google Photos
Google Photos is a media backup, not a complete phone backup. When backup is on, photos and videos are saved to the selected Google Account and can be accessed on devices signed in to that account. Check the Photos app’s backup status and account before deleting local originals or resetting the phone.
For setup and status details, see Google Photos backup guidance. Google distinguishes this media route from the other data covered by Android device backup.

4. Save a Smart Switch backup to a computer
Samsung Smart Switch can back up supported phone data to a computer and restore it to a phone. It can also transfer data from an old phone to a new Galaxy. Samsung describes USB cable, Wi-Fi, and computer-based transfer approaches, but the supported data list depends on the source device and destination; do not treat the result as a guaranteed full clone.
Before a repair or upgrade, create the backup and confirm that the backup copy is present on the computer. Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe the available backup and restore approaches.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Save a Smart Switch backup to an SD card
Smart Switch can also back up phone data to an SD card, giving you a local copy that does not depend on cloud access. This option is not available on every Galaxy: confirm that your model supports the necessary card and that Smart Switch offers SD-card backup on your phone. Samsung’s instructions do not establish universal card capacity, format, or model compatibility, so check the device’s own options before relying on this method.

Some Samsung phones and regions offer integration that links a Samsung account with a Microsoft account to sync Gallery content with OneDrive and back up My Files data. Samsung France describes this option in an article updated March 10, 2026; that documentation does not establish availability on every Galaxy or in every country.
Sync is not always equivalent to an independent backup: changes or deletion can affect synchronized content. Check OneDrive’s status and understand its retention behavior before treating it as your only copy. See Samsung France’s OneDrive and Galaxy guidance.

Check your backup before resetting, repairing, or trading in
A completed status is useful, but the destination matters: verify the account, computer, or card and confirm that the files and categories you care about are actually there. Google’s standard Android setup transfer may omit downloads such as PDFs and media in hidden folders, so copy those separately if needed. Google lists these transfer limitations in its Android transfer guidance.
- Confirm that each chosen backup has finished, and check its destination.
- Open the cloud account or local backup and verify that important content appears.
- Copy important downloads, files in hidden folders, and other items not covered by your selected backup.
- Keep access to the relevant Samsung, Google, and Microsoft accounts, along with the old phone’s screen-lock details where needed.
- Do not factory-reset a phone merely to test a restore: some restore steps and data are available only during initial setup or after a reset.
For irreplaceable material, use complementary copies—for example, a suitable cloud route plus a local computer or SD-card copy when your device supports it. The methods described here are based on vendor support documentation; no restore outcome is guaranteed for every model, app, region, or data category.
