Shareaholic combines sharing with broader marketing features, but its free plan is advertising-supported. This is a feature-fit comparison based on official product pages and plugin listings, not hands-on performance or privacy testing.
How to choose a free social sharing widget
Start with the platform your site uses, then match the widget’s layout and share destinations to what your visitors need. A WordPress plugin installs within WordPress; an embedded widget can work across multiple site systems, but may require adding code and checking compatibility with your specific plan or builder.
- Placement: Inline buttons sit beside or below content; floating or sticky bars remain visible as visitors scroll. A floating control can be convenient, but check that it does not obscure content on small screens.
- Sharing destinations: Choose networks your audience actually uses. A follow button takes visitors to your social account; it is not the same as sharing the current page.
- Scripts and simplicity: Some widgets use third-party scripts, while basic-link options can avoid JavaScript. Review what loads on your site and test the buttons with your theme.
- Counts and analytics: These features depend on available platform data and integrations. A share count is not a universal measure of audience reach or popularity.

1. AddToAny: flexible sharing across platforms
AddToAny offers a customizable universal sharing menu, responsive mobile behavior, inline and floating share bars, and share counts. Its official site says an account is not required. The website code generator also offers a “No script (basic links)” option for a simpler implementation. AddToAny describes its icons as SVG and its CMS plugin loading as asynchronous, and lists Google Analytics integration; these are product descriptions, not independent speed measurements.
Consider it if you want a broadly applicable widget with a range of layouts and a basic-link fallback. Its official site also lists open-source plugins for WordPress, Drupal, and other platforms.

ShareThis provides free inline and sticky or floating buttons, with options for alignment, size, labels, and counts. Its setup instructions use a script and HTML placement markup, and the service offers an anonymous mode that does not require an account.
ShareThis says Instagram and TikTok share buttons are unavailable because those platforms restrict external sharing APIs. It offers follow buttons for those services, but following an account does not publish a visitor’s page share. Check the supported destinations and integration details for your site before choosing it.
3. Shareaholic: sharing plus marketing features
Shareaholic’s pricing page lists a Forever Free plan at $0 for life and describes unlimited pageviews, drag-and-drop configuration, templates, integrations, and 30 days of analytics data storage. It also includes sharing, image sharing, follow buttons, related content, and analytics among its broader toolkit.

The plugin listing says it does not save cookies in visitors’ browsers. That statement is not a complete audit of cookies from the rest of your site, embedded third parties, or legal compliance. The listing accessed in 2026 showed version 3.3.79, 100,000+ active installations, and a last-update indicator of one year earlier. These directory details change, so check the current listing and WordPress compatibility before installing.

That simplicity means fewer widget features: it is not the choice for a rich floating toolbar or detailed analytics. Test keyboard navigation, labels, and appearance with your theme rather than assuming a basic implementation is accessible in every setup.

How to add share buttons to a website
The exact steps depend on the tool and site builder. For a WordPress site, a plugin is usually the more direct route; for another platform, check whether the vendor provides an integration or use its embed instructions if your plan permits custom code.

- Check compatibility and free-plan limits. Confirm the current WordPress version or site-builder plan requirements, along with registration, advertising, branding, and any feature restrictions.
- Install or add the widget. Follow the vendor’s current WordPress plugin instructions or embed steps. Do not paste code into an unfamiliar theme or template area without a backup and a way to revert.
- Test the result. Check mobile and desktop layouts, keyboard focus, button labels, destinations, and whether floating controls cover content. If the widget uses an external script, inspect the page behavior and consent requirements for your jurisdiction.
Can the browser’s native share menu replace a widget?
The Web Share API can open a device’s native sharing interface through Navigator.share(), potentially reducing the need for a row of destination-specific buttons. MDN says the API is available only in secure contexts such as HTTPS and is not Baseline because it does not work in some widely used browsers. Available destinations also depend on the device, so provide a fallback for browsers that do not support it.
What “free” and widget claims do—and do not—tell you
A free plan can still have conditions: Shareaholic discloses advertising on its Forever Free plan, and Hubbub Lite describes additional features unlocked through registration. Features and supported destinations can change, so check the current product page or plugin listing at installation time.
Likewise, vendor descriptions of light loading, privacy, or network reach should not be treated as independent test results. This comparison does not establish which option is fastest or safest. Review the scripts and data practices of the particular implementation you choose, and evaluate it in the context of your site.
