The realistic choices are an existing or spare PC, Oracle Cloud Always Free within its limits, and temporary AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure allowances. The official Arma 3 server software is free; infrastructure is not.
That distinction matters. A discount, free setup, free migration, money-back guarantee, or first-month promotion is still a paid service. For example, Hostinger’s Game Panel VPS is a paid product, not free Arma 3 hosting, even though the service advertises Arma 3 support through its generic game-server panel. A gaming PC can run the server and the game at the same time, but the combined workload can reduce frame rate or server performance. Running a dedicated process on the same machine is most suitable for light sessions rather than a persistent, AI-heavy public community.

According to Bohemia Interactive’s official Arma 3 dedicated-server documentation, the listed minimum is a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of HDD storage. The listed recommendation is a 3.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of SSD storage.
Those figures describe an official baseline, not a promise that a large mod pack, many AI units, or complex mission scripts will perform well. Fast storage helps with loading and updates, while CPU performance and mission workload often matter more than simply adding RAM.
Networking and security requirements
Bohemia’s documentation states that a real IPv4 connection is required and warns that IPv6 and DS-Lite tunneled IPv4 are not supported. A router that displays a private or shared WAN address may not be able to forward the server to the public internet.

Keep the host operating system patched, use a separate low-privilege server account where practical, avoid running the process as root or a full administrator unless required, and expose only the required ports. - The Always Free category is intended to remain available within stated limits rather than ending automatically after a short promotional period.
- A cloud VM avoids keeping a home computer powered on.
- Cloud networking provides more direct control over firewall rules and public access than many residential connections.
- Linux administration, automation, backups, and scheduled restarts can be managed remotely.
Important limitations
Free capacity may be unavailable in the preferred region. Oracle may require account verification and a payment card, and an eligible shape may not be provisioned even when the account is valid. Oracle notes that users may need to select an adjacent region when capacity is unavailable; selecting another region can increase player latency and may matter for data-residency requirements.
An Arm-based VM can also introduce compatibility work. The Arma 3 server may be usable in a particular configuration, but scripts, binaries, Docker images, monitoring tools, or third-party mod utilities may assume x86. “The VM is free” and “the entire Arma 3 administration workflow is supported on that architecture” are separate claims.

AWS can host an Arma 3 server temporarily through eligible Free Tier allowances or introductory benefits, but AWS does not establish a guaranteed permanently free full-time Arma 3 server. Allowances, eligibility, duration, and billing conditions depend on the account, location, signup date, and selected resources.
AWS identifies EC2 and related services within its Free Tier and free-account program. The presence of EC2 in a free program does not prove that a continuously running Arma 3 server, public IPv4 address, disk, snapshots, and outbound traffic will remain within the free allowance.
Best use
AWS is a good fit for a technically experienced reader who wants to test a server, automate infrastructure, run a temporary event, or learn cloud administration. AWS offers mature documentation, multiple regions, security groups, monitoring, and automation tools.
Where AWS charges can appear
- The VM runs beyond the eligible free period or allowance.
- The selected instance type is not eligible.

- Create billing alerts before launching compute resources.
- Confirm the exact instance, storage, IP, and data-transfer terms for the account.
- Use quotas and spending controls where available.
- Tag every resource so it can be found and deleted.
- When testing ends, stop or delete the VM and separately remove disks, snapshots, addresses, and other attached resources.
- Check the billing console after deletion rather than assuming the account has no remaining billable resource.
The smallest eligible instance may start the server but still be unsuitable for heavily modded or AI-heavy missions. Test the actual mission and mod list instead of judging AWS only by its advertised memory size.

5. Can Google Cloud provide free Arma 3 hosting?
Google Cloud can provide temporary Arma 3 hosting through introductory credits, but the credits are not a permanent free-server promise. Google Cloud advertises US$300 in free credits for new customers and other free trials on its Google Cloud Free Program page.
Best use
Google Cloud is suited to a short event, a proof of concept, automation practice, or a temporary server while a group evaluates a mission and mod collection. Google’s global network and cloud tooling can be useful when the players are spread across regions.
Costs and compatibility to check
Credits can be consumed by VM uptime, persistent disks, public IPv4 addresses, snapshots, and network egress. The reader must also confirm that the selected VM shape and operating system can run the Arma 3 server and that the server’s workload fits the available CPU performance.

Set billing notifications before deployment, check the credit balance regularly, and delete all resources when the test ends. A promotional balance should never be treated as an unlimited monthly hosting budget.
Verdict
Use Google Cloud when introductory credit is valuable for testing or a short-lived event. Google Cloud is not the best choice for a server that must remain free indefinitely after the credit is consumed.
6. Is Microsoft Azure a free Arma 3 server host?
Microsoft Azure is a conditional free-hosting route, not a verified permanently free Arma 3 host. Azure lists Linux and Windows virtual machines among its compute services and describes free services, quotas, and eligibility on its Azure free-services pricing page.
Who should choose Azure?
Azure makes the most sense for an existing Microsoft user, student, developer, or administrator who already understands Azure subscriptions, virtual networks, network security groups, and resource cleanup. Windows and Linux VM options can simplify a deployment for users already familiar with one of those operating systems.
Why Azure is not automatically free forever
Free-account resources vary by account, service, duration, and quota. VM runtime, public IP resources, disks, bandwidth, backups, and other attached services can become billable. Azure’s free-services listing does not by itself establish a permanent free compute entitlement suitable for an always-on Arma 3 server.
Create cost alerts, confirm the selected VM and storage terms, and delete the resource group and associated resources when testing finishes. Check whether a stopped VM is deallocated; stopping an operating system does not necessarily mean every attached resource has stopped generating charges.
Verdict
Azure is a reasonable temporary platform for users already comfortable with Microsoft’s cloud. Azure is too administratively heavy for many small groups whose only goal is to play Arma 3 at no monthly cost.

The exact commands differ between Windows and Linux, but the overall sequence is the same: prepare the operating system, install the official server package, configure launch parameters and server files, open networking rules, and test from outside the host network.

- Create the server configuration files. Configure the hostname, password policy, mission rotation, player limits, BattlEye settings, and mod parameters separately from the executable launch parameters.
- Choose and document the ports. The common game port is 2302. The documented Steam port default is 8766, and that port must be unique when multiple servers share a host. Confirm the required UDP or TCP rules for the selected setup rather than assuming one universal port rule.
- Open cloud and operating-system firewalls. On a home server, configure the router and host firewall. In a cloud environment, configure the security group, security list, or network security group as well as the guest operating system firewall.
- Launch the x64 server executable. The official startup-parameter reference documents parameters such as
-port,-server,-setUpHost, and-pid. For example, the documented port syntax includesarma3server_x64.exe -port=1337. Startup parameters do not replace server configuration files. - Confirm the process and logs. Make sure the process remains active, the intended port is listening, and the logs do not show missing files, failed mods, BattlEye errors, or configuration problems.
- Test from an external network. Test using a different internet connection, not only another device on the same LAN. If browser discovery fails, try direct connection after checking the server address and port.
- Add mods gradually. Establish a known-good vanilla server first, then add mods in controlled groups and record the exact client/server mod list and load order.
- Automate maintenance. Add scheduled restarts, update procedures, log cleanup, and backups before inviting a larger group.
Which ports and network settings does Arma 3 need?
Arma 3 connectivity requires more than forwarding a single port. The common game port is 2302, while Steam or query-related traffic can involve the documented default port 8766. The exact UDP and TCP rules depend on the server configuration and hosting environment.
Check all of the following when players cannot see or join the server:
- The server process is running and listening on the selected port.
- The startup parameter uses the port the administrator intended.
- The cloud security group or firewall allows the required traffic.
- The operating-system firewall allows the server executable.
- The server is bound to the intended network interface.
- The host has a public IPv4 address rather than a CGNAT or private WAN address.
- The router forwards traffic to the correct internal address for a home server.
- Testing is performed from outside the local network.
- Players use the same game version, mods, and required dependencies.
- BattlEye and server logs do not show a rejection or signature problem.
Bohemia’s dedicated-server documentation specifically warns that IPv6 and DS-Lite tunneled IPv4 are not supported. That limitation can rule out an otherwise capable home connection.

How do mods, BattlEye, and Creator DLC work on a free server?
Free hosting does not reduce the compatibility requirements between the server and its players. Workshop mods must be downloaded and updated consistently, the server and clients must use compatible versions and load orders, and signature or key configuration must be kept synchronized.
Mod-management checklist
- Start with a vanilla mission and confirm that players can join.
- Add one mod or one controlled mod group at a time.
- Keep a written, versioned mod list and load order.
- Back up the known-good configuration before updates.
- Check server logs and BattlEye logs when a player is rejected.
- Remove or roll back the most recently changed mod when version drift causes connection failures.
- Allow additional storage and update time for large Workshop collections.
Creator DLC requires careful qualification. Bohemia explains that the free standalone Arma 3 Server tool is available to server administrators and that an administrator does not necessarily need to own Creator DLC to host a dedicated server using its content. Players may still need the relevant DLC or compatibility data, and terrain ownership, content restrictions, branch differences, and mod dependencies still need to be tested on clean client installations. What should you do if free cloud hosting generates a bill?
An unexpected cloud bill usually comes from an expired or exhausted allowance, a non-free machine shape, public IPv4, persistent storage, snapshots, backups, outbound bandwidth, or an additional service that remained active.
- Stop or delete the VM immediately if the server is not needed.
- Delete attached disks, snapshots, reserved addresses, backups, and unused network resources separately.
- Check whether “stopped” means deallocated and non-billable for the specific provider and resource.
- Review the billing dashboard and usage breakdown rather than relying only on an email alert.
- Set budget alerts, quotas, and spending limits before recreating the server.
- Use a short scheduled runtime for testing instead of leaving the VM on continuously.
A free promotional credit is a spending allowance, not a guarantee that the service remains free after the credit expires. A provider can also charge for a resource that is separate from the free VM itself.

Why can an Oracle free VM not be created?
An Oracle Always Free VM may fail to provision because free capacity is exhausted in the selected region, the requested shape is unavailable, account verification is incomplete, the account has reached its limits, or a previous VM was reclaimed.
