Useful WordPress improvements do not always require another plugin. Start with the tools already in WordPress, keep the software and extensions maintained, and make backups you can restore. The tips below focus on publishing, customization, updates, security, backups, and hosting compatibility—the tasks that help site owners build and look after a site.

Use WordPress’s built-in guidance and publishing tools

WordPress maintains task-specific documentation for installation, publishing, blocks, customization, security, and maintenance. Use the official documentation index to find instructions for the version and task you are working with, rather than installing an extension before checking whether WordPress already supports what you need.

Find instructions for the task at hand

  • For writing and publishing, look for guidance on posts, pages, and the block editor.
  • For changes to the site’s appearance or behavior, consult the customization documentation before choosing a theme or plugin.
  • For upkeep, use the maintenance and security guidance as a checklist rather than waiting for a problem.

Documentation is most useful when you match the instructions to your actual WordPress setup. If a screen or control differs, check that you are following guidance for the relevant version and feature.

Choose plugins and themes deliberately

A plugin or theme adds code to your site, so assess whether you need it and whether it is maintained before installing it. WordPress explains how to review plugin information and manage updates in its plugin management documentation.

  • Read the plugin’s description and developer documentation to confirm it addresses your actual need.
  • Check maintenance activity and compatibility information before installation; prefer extensions that are actively receiving updates.
  • Confirm its requirements fit your site’s WordPress and server environment.
  • Look for an existing WordPress feature that can do the job before adding another extension.

These checks help reduce unnecessary complexity, but they do not guarantee that an extension is secure or trouble-free. Review the extension’s updates and compatibility again as your site changes.

Update WordPress, themes, and plugins safely

WordPress’s security handbook calls keeping WordPress itself and all installed plugins and themes up to date the most important security practice. See the WordPress security handbook for its guidance. Updates also address maintenance and compatibility issues, but an update can cause problems, so prepare before applying one.

  1. Make sure you have a current backup and know how you would restore it.
  2. Open the WordPress dashboard and review available updates for WordPress, plugins, and themes.
  3. Apply updates and check the site’s important pages and functions afterward.
  4. In the dashboard’s Plugins screen, enable automatic updates for individual plugins if that suits your maintenance approach. This is an available control, not a guarantee that every update will be risk-free.

WordPress says only the latest release is officially supported. Older versions may receive security fixes as a courtesy, but that is not equivalent to official support for an older release. Check the WordPress versions documentation when deciding whether a site is behind.

Make backups a routine—and know how to restore them

A backup is useful only if it is current and can be restored. WordPress recommends keeping backups both on the hosting server and on a computer in its backup documentation. Make backups regularly, and create or confirm a current one before updating plugins.

  • Keep copies in more than one location, so a problem affecting the hosting account does not leave you with no separate copy.
  • Include a practical restoration plan: know where the backup is, how to access it, and what steps are needed to put the site back.
  • Do not assume a backup service or plugin is suitable without checking its backup and restore process for your site.

Check that your host meets WordPress’s requirements

WordPress’s requirements page recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, MariaDB 10.11 or newer or MySQL 8.0 or newer, and HTTPS support. These are version-sensitive recommendations; consult the current WordPress requirements when reviewing a hosting account or planning a move.

The same page notes that older combinations—PHP 7.4+ and MySQL 5.5.5+—have reached end of life and may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Ask your host which PHP and database versions your site uses, and whether it can support the current recommendations. HTTPS support is another requirement to verify; do not infer that a server meets it from a hosting plan’s name alone.

Turn these tips into a manageable routine

A short recurring review is easier to act on than an occasional overhaul. Use this checklist when maintaining a WordPress site:

  • Review WordPress, plugin, and theme updates; keep the site on the latest release.
  • Before updates, confirm that a current backup exists and that you know how to restore it.
  • Check that installed extensions remain maintained, compatible, and necessary.
  • Verify the host’s PHP and database versions against WordPress’s current recommendations, and confirm HTTPS support.
  • Use WordPress’s official documentation for the specific publishing, customization, security, or maintenance task you are tackling.
