A spare USB webcam can do more than put your face on screen: with a computer and suitable software, it can watch for motion, show a close-up of a project, or add another view to a stream. Here are five less-obvious ways to reuse one, along with the setup limits and risks to know before you start.
Before you reuse a webcam
Most USB webcams need a host device and compatible software; they do not automatically work as standalone network cameras. What you can do depends on the camera’s focus, resolution, frame rate, connection, mount, operating system, and the app you choose. A manufacturer describes plug-and-play USB operation for its Live! Cam Sync 1080p V2, but that does not guarantee every webcam works with every host or application.
If you need to position the camera above a desk, check its mounting hardware first. Creative specifies a 1/4-inch-20 plate and universal tripod-mount compatibility for that particular model; do not assume another webcam has the same fitting.
1. Build a basic motion-triggered monitor
Connect the webcam to a computer or other compatible host and use capture software that can detect motion and save images. This can be useful for checking whether a pet enters a room or whether something changes on a workbench while you are away. Adafruit’s USB webcam motion-detection project illustrates the concept, but its guide is older and warns that its service-access path no longer works. Treat it as an example, not a current turnkey recipe; confirm that the software and instructions still suit your host.

A webcam used for monitoring also introduces privacy and security concerns. Place it only where recording is appropriate, secure the computer or host account, keep software updated, and review whether remote access is enabled. These are among the precautions recommended in eufy’s vendor guide to camera privacy.
2. Turn it into a document or object camera
Point the webcam down at a page, recipe, craft project, or small object, then capture or share the view with suitable software. It can be a handy way to show a handwritten note during a call, demonstrate a repair, or keep a reference visible while working.

Do not expect a generic webcam to produce clean, scanner-like results. Sharpness depends on its resolution and focus distance, as well as lighting, lens distortion, camera stability, and the application. A manufacturer’s dual-camera webcam product page describes close focusing for small objects; that describes a specific product, not every spare camera. 3. Add a second angle to a stream or demonstration
Use the spare camera to show your hands, a work surface, or a product while another camera frames you. The extra view can make a tutorial easier to follow without repeatedly moving the main camera. That use case does not mean any two USB webcams can be combined automatically. The computer, operating system, and streaming or meeting app must all support the cameras together, and the host may have limits on available USB bandwidth or ports. Check the app’s camera-selection options before planning a two-camera setup.
4. Experiment with facial capture or tracking
A webcam may be usable for facial capture in a VTubing or gaming application, letting an avatar respond to your expressions or head movement. This is an experiment rather than a guaranteed repurpose: tracking depends on lighting, frame rate, resolution, camera placement, operating-system support, and the application’s compatibility with your particular camera. A secondary article lists facial capture among old-webcam uses (BGR’s overview), but there is no universal compatibility promise for arbitrary models.

Before spending time on setup, check the app’s current camera and operating-system requirements. Position the camera so your face remains well lit and in frame, then test the result in the intended app rather than assuming that a webcam recognized by one program will work in another.

For a more hands-on project, the European Space Agency’s Climate Detectives webcam activity describes modifying a webcam by removing its infrared filter. This is a physical camera modification, not a software setting, and opening the device can damage it. The result is model-dependent, so follow the activity’s instructions carefully and use a camera you are willing to risk rather than your only working webcam.

Which idea makes sense for your spare camera?

For a low-risk start, try the document view or a second angle if your software supports it. Monitoring takes more care with privacy, while infrared conversion is the only idea here that requires opening and altering the camera.
