To troubleshoot high Discord RAM usage on Windows, restart the app, clear its cache, update it, test hardware acceleration off, and monitor whether memory keeps growing. These are troubleshooting steps—not guaranteed memory optimizations: Discord and Microsoft do not publish a specific amount of RAM any one step will save.
Why Discord can show several processes in Task Manager
Discord’s Windows desktop app uses Chromium’s multi-process model. Discord says it is normal to see a main process, renderer, crash reporter, and GPU process. With the in-game overlay, Windows may also show an overlay host, an overlay GPU process, and an overlay renderer for each game. That process count alone does not show that Discord has a memory leak. Discord also says the GPU process remains even when hardware acceleration is off. Discord explains its multiple processes here.
Memory use can vary with what the app is doing and the system it is running on. Discord’s troubleshooting guidance recommends at least 4 GB of RAM, but that is a minimum recommendation, not a guarantee of smooth performance for every combination of Windows, games, voice calls, and streaming. See Discord’s troubleshooting guidance.
Five ways to troubleshoot high Discord RAM usage
1. Fully close Discord, then reopen it
- Right-click Discord in the Windows taskbar notification area and choose Quit Discord. If you do not see it there, use Task Manager to check whether Discord is still running and end its processes.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reopen Discord.
- In Task Manager, compare Discord’s memory use after relaunch with the earlier reading.
Discord recommends a full close and restart as a troubleshooting reset. It may clear a temporary issue, but the source does not promise that memory use will fall or stay lower. Discord’s troubleshooting steps.

2. Clear Discord’s Windows cache
Discord lists its Windows cache at %appdata%/discord/Cache. Close Discord before removing the contents of that Cache folder, then reopen the app. This clears cached files; it does not establish that the cache caused high RAM use, and Discord does not quantify memory saved by clearing it.
Do not delete the entire Discord folder under AppData as a first-line memory tweak. Discord discusses broader AppData deletion in the context of installation troubleshooting, not as a measured RAM fix. See Discord’s Windows troubleshooting guidance.

3. Check for and install Discord updates
In Discord, open User Settings, then check App Settings for update options. If the app remains out of date or an update fails, Discord’s troubleshooting guide advises downloading a fresh installer. Update labels can change, so use the current settings shown in your installed version.
An update is a sensible troubleshooting step, not a documented RAM-saving guarantee: Discord’s cited guidance gives no measured memory reduction from updating. Discord’s update troubleshooting instructions.

4. Test Discord with hardware acceleration off
Open User Settings > Advanced and turn off Hardware Acceleration, then restart Discord if prompted. Use the app for the same activities that usually lead to high memory use and compare Task Manager readings before and after. If performance or visual behavior gets worse, turn the setting back on.
Discord lists this toggle as a troubleshooting option, but does not say it reliably lowers RAM use. The GPU process can still appear when acceleration is disabled, so its presence is not evidence that the setting failed. Discord’s troubleshooting guide and process explanation.

5. Track memory over time and report a reproducible problem
Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc and observe Discord’s memory use during ordinary use, rather than judging it from one reading. Microsoft describes a possible memory-leak pattern as usage that keeps rising over time without being released. A high reading by itself does not establish a leak.
Task Manager’s default process memory figure is working set. Microsoft notes that commit size can be relevant when investigating virtual-memory exhaustion, so a single Task Manager column may not explain every memory problem. For a consumer troubleshooting issue, start by recording the trend and the actions that reproduce it rather than jumping to specialized diagnostic tools. Microsoft’s memory-leak guidance.

Switching to a 64-bit client should not be presented as a way to reduce Discord’s RAM use. In a December 13, 2024 engineering post, Discord Senior Software Engineer Christopher Harris said telemetry showed that memory use in the 64-bit client had “gone slightly up,” which Discord expected from the architectural changes. The post also reported lower CPU use and fewer out-of-memory crashes, without publishing numeric figures for those changes. These are Discord’s telemetry observations, not a guarantee for each Windows PC. Read Discord’s engineering post.
