The clearest example is a replacement appliance knob: Jorge A. Aguilar’s 2026 How-To Geek article puts one gas cooktop knob at $70–$93. Those figures are examples from that article, not current price quotes or proof that printing always saves money.
When does printing actually save money?
Compare the item’s purchase price with the full cost of getting a usable print. Filament is only one part of that calculation: you may also need printer access, time to measure or adapt a design, and material for unsuccessful prints. Aguilar’s article does not quantify those additional costs, so its dollar comparisons should be treated as illustrations rather than guaranteed savings.
You do not necessarily need to own a printer. Aguilar describes using a local library printer in his personal account; library access, availability, and fees vary, so check with your own library.
Five useful things to print instead of buy
1. Appliance knobs
A replacement knob can be worth considering when a matching part is unusually expensive or hard to find. Aguilar’s article says one gas cooktop knob can cost $70–$93 and that a set for some premium stoves can approach $350. These are the article’s cited examples, not a current survey of appliance-part prices.

Fit is critical. Measure the metal control post with digital calipers, including its diameter, the flat side of a D-shaped post, and how far the knob must reach to engage the control mechanism. A design that looks right but fits loosely, bottoms out, or fails to engage properly is not a usable replacement. Aguilar suggests Tinkercad or Fusion 360 for designing a knob, or looking for an existing design.
For knobs near a stove or in a humid laundry room, Aguilar suggests PETG or ASA. That is a material suggestion in his article, not a safety certification or evidence that a printed knob is suitable for every appliance, temperature, or use. Follow appliance-maker guidance and do not rely on an unvalidated print where failure could create a hazard.

2. Custom mounts and brackets
A printed mount can match a particular device and space—for example, a router or speaker, or a spacer for a screen whose mounting geometry does not fit a standard bracket. The practical advantage is customization, not a proven ability to hold a particular weight. Aguilar’s article supplies no load or durability testing, so do not assume an arbitrary printed mount is safe for an overhead, heavy, or otherwise consequential installation.
3. Drawer dividers and inserts
Custom dividers can use a drawer’s dimensions more efficiently than a one-size-fits-all organizer. Modular systems such as Gridfinity also make it easier to rearrange compartments as storage needs change. The article presents this as a practical alternative to commercial organizers but does not provide a systematic cost comparison; measure the drawer and consider how often you expect to change the layout before spending time designing an insert.

4. Phone and tablet stands
For a simple stand, Aguilar’s article estimates about $1 in filament and says commercial stands start around $10. It gives an illustrative savings range of $9–$19 per stand. The article does not explain how it calculated those figures, and they exclude printer access, design time, and failed prints. Treat them as a rough example, not a typical or guaranteed saving.
5. Cable-management clips
Custom hooks or clips can be shaped around particular cables and a desk, shelf, or other workspace. Aguilar suggests TPU for flexible clips and PLA or PETG for tougher ones. He compares printing with repeatedly buying store-bought adhesive clip packs priced at $10–$15 in his article; that is his comparison, not a current market check. Choose a design that fits the cable without pinching it, and do not assume a printed clip will adhere to a surface like an adhesive-backed product.

A quick decision checklist
- Check the real replacement price. The article’s figures are examples from 2026, not live quotes; verify what the item costs and whether the exact part is available.
- Confirm that fit or customization matters. A print is most compelling when dimensions, shape, or modularity solve a specific problem.
- Count the non-filament effort. Include access to a printer, measuring and design time, and the possibility of a failed print; the article does not price these.
- Match the material to the use. The article suggests PETG or ASA for knobs, TPU for flexible clips, and PLA or PETG for tougher clips, but does not independently test or certify those choices.
- Do not treat a print as safety-rated. The article reports no validated heat, load, or durability testing for its examples.
