Before replacing filament to fix a rough or unreliable print, check the slicer settings that control layer shape, extrusion, speed, temperature, and cooling. The right adjustment depends on the defect and your printer, nozzle, material, and profile; changing all five settings at once makes it harder to identify what helped. The title’s first-person experiment and instant improvement are not independently verified, so this guide focuses on what the settings do and how to troubleshoot them carefully.
Start with the defect, not a blanket settings change
Open the profile you actually use and identify the visible problem: lost detail, uneven extrusion, poor surface quality, sagging, or a print that takes longer than expected. Then adjust the setting most relevant to that symptom. Keep the printer, nozzle, filament, and other slicer values consistent while comparing test prints; that is a practical way to isolate cause and effect, not a manufacturer-validated five-step test protocol.
Prusa’s official PrusaSlicer guidance puts the dependency plainly: “Different materials require different print temperatures, print speed, cooling, and a variety of other settings.” Start from a profile intended for your printer and material rather than treating a setting value as universal. See Prusa’s first-print guidance and UltiMaker’s 3D-printing guidance.
Which slicer settings should you check?
1. Layer height: detail versus print time
Layer height is the thickness of each printed layer. Thinner layers can capture finer vertical detail, but the printer must lay down more layers, increasing print time. Prusa’s first-print instructions present 0.15 mm and 0.20 mm as starting profile choices, not universal targets for every printer or model. If a print looks rough in the vertical direction, compare a modestly thinner layer height with the original profile and assess both the finish and added time.

Layer height is constrained by nozzle size and the rest of the profile. Cura’s quality-settings guidance connects layer height to nozzle size and warns that substantial layer-height changes without revisiting related flow settings can cause extrusion problems. Prusa also explains the relationship in its guide to layers and perimeters.
2. Line width: how much material each path lays down
Line width is the width assigned to an extrusion path. It affects the amount of material the slicer calculates for that path, so it should be considered alongside nozzle size and the selected printer profile—not as a cosmetic control independent of extrusion. If you change it, use a profile-compatible value and check the resulting extrusion before judging surface quality. Cura’s quality-settings documentation describes line width’s role in its extrusion-rate calculations.

3. Print speed: balance speed with the material profile
Print speed affects how quickly the printer lays down material, but there is no supported single speed that improves every print. The suitable value depends on the filament and printer profile. If detail or surface quality is poor, try a small speed adjustment while holding other settings steady; judge the result against the same model and profile rather than assuming slower or faster is always better. Prusa’s PrusaSlicer first-print guidance notes that print speed varies with material.
4. Nozzle temperature: use the filament and profile as your guide
Nozzle temperature is material-dependent. Avoid copying a temperature from another filament or printer setup as if it were a general fix. If extrusion or surface quality is inconsistent, check the recommended range for your particular filament and use the corresponding printer profile as your baseline. Change temperature cautiously and compare prints without simultaneously changing speed or cooling. Prusa’s official guidance identifies print temperature as one of the settings that differs by material.

5. Cooling: match the material and the print profile
Cooling can affect how deposited material behaves, but the appropriate fan behavior depends on the material and profile. Do not apply one fan percentage to every filament. If the symptom suggests a cooling issue, use the material-specific profile as your starting point and adjust cooling in isolation. Prusa’s cooling guide explains this setting in the context of its printers and slicer profiles.
Check filament diameter if extrusion seems inconsistent
Before deciding that a reel is defective, verify that the slicer’s entered filament diameter matches the material you are using. UltiMaker recommends checking the diameter entry when using a new reel or brand. If you have digital calipers, you can use them to check the filament’s diameter; that is a practical measurement suggestion, not a claim that calipers calibrate flow by themselves or that UltiMaker endorses a particular tool. See UltiMaker’s 3D-printing guidance.

Make a useful comparison without changing everything
- Record the baseline: note the printer, nozzle, filament, profile, and current values for the settings you plan to investigate.
- Choose one symptom: decide what you want to improve, such as vertical detail or inconsistent extrusion.
- Change a relevant setting: use a small, profile-compatible adjustment rather than changing all five controls at once.
- Compare like for like: print the same model under the same conditions where practical, then compare the targeted defect and any trade-off, such as added print time.
- Keep or revert: record whether the change helped before moving to another variable. If the result is worse, restore the previous value rather than stacking unknown adjustments.
These steps are a cautious troubleshooting method. The manufacturer documentation cited here explains how settings relate to print quality; it does not establish a universal five-setting sequence or guarantee an immediate improvement. If the problem is layer shifting rather than surface quality or extrusion, consult Prusa’s separate layer-shifting troubleshooting guide instead of treating it as a filament-setting issue.
