Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →A slow network does not automatically mean your Ethernet switch is the problem. Look for evidence: unexpectedly low negotiated link speeds, rising output drops, a busy destination link, physical-layer errors, or a documented limit in the switch’s design. Check the links and counters while the slowdown is happening before replacing hardware.
1. A link negotiates below the speed it should support
A switch port may be gigabit-capable while the device connected to it is using a slower link. The slowest segment on a traffic path can limit the transfer, so check the negotiated speed at both ends—not just the switch’s advertised port speed. Cisco’s LAN switching troubleshooting guidance and switch port troubleshooting guidance both treat speed and duplex settings as relevant to performance problems.
Inspect the link status on the switch and the connected computer, server, access point, or other device. If either end reports a lower speed than the equipment and cabling should support, investigate that link before blaming the switch’s overall capacity. A cable, endpoint network adapter, port, or configuration issue may be responsible.
2. Output discards or buffer failures rise during the slowdown
Interface counters can help distinguish congestion from a vague impression that the network feels slow. Cisco notes that output discards and buffer failures can indicate that an egress interface is oversubscribed, traffic is arriving faster than it can be sent, or buffers are filling. Those conditions can result in dropped packets, retransmissions, and application delays.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Compare counter changes while reproducing the problem. A large historical total alone does not show when the drops occurred or whether they explain the current slowdown. Rising output discards or buffer failures are evidence to investigate congestion; they do not, by themselves, prove that the switch is defective. Cisco’s interface troubleshooting page explains these counters and possible causes.
3. Several fast sources send traffic to one slower destination link
Multiple devices can each have fast access links and still compete for a single egress port. For example, several computers sending data to a server connected through one slower link can collectively offer more traffic than that link can transmit. The resulting congestion is about the direction and destination of the traffic, not simply how many ports are in use.

Identify which devices are communicating, where the traffic is going, and which switch port carries it out. If several flows converge on one link, that egress port may be the constraint even when the source ports are operating normally. Cisco describes how excess traffic on an output interface can fill buffers and cause packet drops in its switch port and interface guidance.
4. Link errors suggest a physical or duplex problem
Errors point to a different diagnostic path than simple capacity limits. FCS, alignment, and late-collision errors can be associated with a duplex mismatch, but they are not proof that the switch is the cause. A damaged or unsuitable cable, a faulty endpoint network adapter, or a failing port can also produce link problems.

Check both devices at the ends of the link, verify their speed and duplex settings, and test the physical path by substituting a known-good cable or port where practical. Cisco’s LAN switching troubleshooting guidance and switch interface guidance discuss these error types and alternative causes.
5. The switch’s internal design or uplink cannot carry the aggregate traffic
Some switch architectures can limit the combined traffic of a group of ports, or a switch’s uplink can constrain traffic moving to another network segment. But internal oversubscription depends on the specific hardware design; it is not a reliable assumption about inexpensive switches as a category.

Cisco documents one platform-specific example in its Catalyst 6500/6000 hardware troubleshooting guide: eight ports share a 1-Gigabit internal uplink, with an aggregate throughput limit of 1 Gbps for that block. That figure applies to the documented Catalyst module, not ordinary desktop switches generally. For your own device, identify the exact model and check its documented architecture and uplink capacity.
How to diagnose the switch before replacing it
- Identify the slow traffic. Note which devices are communicating and whether their traffic crosses the switch or uses a different path.
- Check negotiated speed at both ends. Confirm the switch and connected device report the expected link speed; inspect duplex settings if performance or errors suggest a mismatch.
- Watch counters during the slowdown. Record interface errors, output discards, and buffer failures before and during a repeatable problem, then compare the changes.
- Trace the traffic direction. Look for several sources sending to one destination and determine which egress port carries the combined traffic.
- Test the physical link. Check cables, ports, endpoint network adapters, and duplex configuration if error counters increase.
- Compare the evidence with the switch’s documented limits. Consider replacement only when a measured capacity or feature limit fits the symptoms.
What to compare if an upgrade is justified
Choose around the constraint you found rather than price alone. Compare the number and speed of ports you need with the uplink capacity required for traffic between parts of your network. If you need interface statistics or traffic visibility for troubleshooting, check that the specific model offers the management features you require. Add Power over Ethernet (PoE) only if connected devices need it.
