Lanterns isn’t a typical space opera. HBO’s Green Lantern series puts veteran Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and newcomer John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) on a murder investigation on Earth. So the best follow-ups depend on what you liked: the mystery, the mentor-and-rookie pairing, the superhero mythology, or the cosmic scale. Here are five sci-fi series, each matched to one of those draws.
What Lanterns offers, and how these picks were chosen
Prime Video’s listing describes Hal and John as intergalactic cops pulled into an Earth-based murder mystery, and names Damon Lindelof, Chris Mundy and Tom King as co-creators (Prime Video listing). HBO’s press room says it is based on DC’s Green Lantern characters and was slated to debut in August 2026 on HBO and HBO Max (HBO Max press room, March 5, 2026). Warner Bros. Discovery records an eight-episode, straight-to-series order (WBD Pressroom).
No single show matches all of that. The picks below are compared on four axes: grounded mystery, mentor-partner dynamic, superhero or comic-book mythology, and institutional or political intrigue. Titles and descriptions come from general knowledge of the shows, so check the current synopsis before you commit.
The five picks
1. Watchmen (2019): for the Lindelof connection and a mystery inside superhero lore
Damon Lindelof’s HBO series starts with a murder in a world shaped by masked vigilantes and builds a layered conspiracy around it. It is the closest match if you want a DC-published mythology treated as a serious crime story. You don’t need to have read the graphic novel, though it adds context.

2. The Expanse: for the detective plot in a sci-fi setting
One thread follows a burned-out detective searching for a missing woman across a colonized solar system. It starts as noir and grows into a large political saga. Pick it for investigation plus believable, lived-in science fiction.
3. Andor: for institutional intrigue
This Star Wars series is more spy thriller than space fantasy. It focuses on how bureaucracies, empires and rebel cells operate. It suits viewers who enjoyed the Green Lantern Corps as an organization with rules and politics rather than just glowing rings.

4. Peacemaker: for comic-book mythology with a partnership at its core
A DC series built around an unlikely team. It is much more comedic and profane than Lanterns, so take it for the mismatched-allies dynamic and DC world-building, not the tone.
5. Severance: for a sci-fi mystery that stays grounded
Apple TV’s workplace thriller uses one speculative idea and a slow-burn puzzle. It matches the “unsettling secret under a normal surface” feeling more than any space action.
