Microsoft Learn is a self-directed library of interactive learning paths and modules, and it includes a Student Hub with resources aimed at students. The list below is a curated selection, not an official Microsoft ranking. Four of the five picks are fully described on Microsoft’s own course pages. The fifth is a slot you fill from the catalog, and the section on it explains how to choose well.
How these picks were selected
Microsoft’s catalog is broad, so the selection rests on four criteria:
- Beginner accessibility: a student with limited background can start without a prior course.
- Stated prerequisites: the path says what it assumes, so you know whether to take it now or later.
- Breadth: the path touches a core computer science area such as computing fundamentals, programming, cloud systems, or AI.
- Progression: foundations come before specialisation.
The best order still depends on your coursework and interests. A student already taking a programming course can skip ahead of the first entry.
The four paths with confirmed details
The table gives the at-a-glance facts as listed on Microsoft Learn’s course and training pages in 2026. The sections after it explain what each path is for.
#1 Best Overall
| Path | Level | Modules | Listed duration | Prerequisites | Suggested slot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exploring basic computer concepts | Beginner | 4 | 1 hour 45 minutes | None listed | First |
| Get Started with Python Programming: Part 1 – Fundamentals | Beginner | 4 | 3 hours 12 minutes | Not stated on the course summary | Second |
| Azure Fundamentals (three beginner paths) | Beginner | Not stated per path | 56 minutes; 2 hours 48 minutes; 1 hour 21 minutes | Not stated in the training overview | Third, after the first two |
| Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure | Beginner | 7 | Not stated | Basic computing concepts and Python | Fourth, after Python |
1. Exploring basic computer concepts
This is the right entry point if you have never studied how computers work. It covers how computers work and connect to the internet, basic programming, computing history, and security. Treat it as an orientation or a refresher. It does not replace a university computer organisation or networking course, and it will not give you the depth those courses provide.
2. Get Started with Python Programming: Part 1 – Fundamentals
This path moves from writing first code to setting up a development environment, then to reusable programming logic, including functions. Its modules also cover decisions and data manipulation. Microsoft describes it as building the foundational skills needed to begin building Python applications. Python is the language most first-year courses use, so this path pairs well with a class. After finishing, write a small program that uses functions and decisions, such as a grade calculator, to turn the modules into working code.
Rank #2
3. Azure Fundamentals
The Azure training overview presents three beginner paths: describing cloud concepts, describing Azure architecture and services, and describing Azure management and governance. Together they explain the vocabulary and building blocks that much modern software runs on. These are cloud concepts, not core substitutes for algorithms, operating systems, or software design coursework. The overview presents Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals and a practice assessment as possible next steps after training. Certification is optional; the training overview does not treat it as a prerequisite.
4. Get started with AI applications and agents on Azure
This beginner path has seven modules and surveys the main AI workloads: generative AI and agents, text analysis, speech, computer vision, information extraction, and knowledge retrieval. It assumes you already understand basic computing concepts and Python, which is why it belongs after the Python path. Treat it as an exploratory tour of applied AI rather than a deep machine learning course, since it is about using AI services and building applications on them.

Choosing the fifth path
The catalog includes broad options in areas such as AI and cybersecurity, but the official summaries available for this list do not support endorsing one specific fifth path with the same detail as the four above. Pick it yourself using the questions below, and check the live course page for each candidate before you enrol.
- Level and prerequisites: does the page state what you must already know? If you have no security background, choose a general cybersecurity path over one that assumes prior knowledge.
- Subject coverage: does it add a new area, or repeat what you have already covered?
- Estimated time: does the listed duration fit your term schedule?
Be careful with names. An AI-security path explicitly assumes familiarity with basic AI and security concepts, so it is a later choice, after you have finished the AI path above or equivalent coursework. A general cybersecurity path is the better fifth pick if you want security foundations first.
Rank #4
The Bottom Line
Start with basic computer concepts and Python, use Azure Fundamentals to learn cloud vocabulary, add the Azure AI path once Python is comfortable, and fill the fifth slot with a path whose prerequisites match what you already know. Microsoft updates catalog titles, durations, module counts, and product names over time, so confirm the live course page before enrolling.
