Start with the camera: iPhone 18 Pro’s variable-aperture main lens and expanded manual controls give you useful ways to shape photos and video from the first day. Then try Photographic Styles, post-capture video effects, multiple Live Activities on Dynamic Island, and Siri’s beta AI features—keeping in mind that some capabilities depend on app support or rollout availability.
1. Compare the variable-aperture main camera settings
The 48MP Fusion Main camera has four aperture settings: ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8, and ƒ/4.0. Apple says the camera can adjust aperture automatically in response to lighting and depth of field, and that Pro controls let you select it manually. Apple’s launch announcement and its iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications describe the feature.
To see what the controls do, photograph the same subject at different settings and compare the results. A portrait can reveal changes in background blur; a group photo can help you examine depth of field across several faces; a dim scene lets you observe how aperture interacts with available light. These are useful experiments, not a guarantee that one setting will always produce a better picture.
2. Take a first photo with Pro controls
Apple says the camera controls include aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, plus a histogram for reviewing exposure. Start with a stationary subject so movement does not complicate the comparison.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Open the Camera app and choose the photo mode with Pro controls.
- Take a baseline photo, then change just one control—such as shutter speed or white balance—and take another.
- Review the histogram and compare the images. Changing one setting at a time makes it easier to see its effect.
These controls are also a way to learn how a camera setting affects the image, rather than relying entirely on automatic decisions. The appropriate adjustment depends on the scene and the look you want.
3. Try texture and grain in Photographic Styles
The updated Photographic Styles controls let you adjust texture and grain, as well as tune color and skin qualities together, according to Apple. Try the options on a portrait and compare versions of the same image. That makes it easier to judge how a particular treatment affects both skin and the rest of the scene, without assuming any one look suits every subject.
4. Explore video tools after recording
Apply Cinematic effects to captured video
Apple says Cinematic effects can be applied after capture to video recorded at up to 60 frames per second. Try recording a short clip with a clear subject and background, then explore the effect in the editing controls. The ability to apply the effect after recording gives you room to experiment without choosing the final treatment before you shoot.

Record a 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse
Time-lapse recording now supports 4K and Dolby Vision HDR, according to Apple’s announcement. A scene with gradual movement or changing light is a practical subject for trying the mode.

For more recording control, Tom’s Guide reports that Final Cut Camera 2.4 added support for iPhone 18 Pro’s variable-aperture lens, along with settings such as shutter angle, ISO, and white balance. See Tom’s Guide’s report on Final Cut Camera 2.4. This is a separate camera app, so it is an option to explore if the built-in controls are not enough for your recording workflow.
5. Put several Live Activities on Dynamic Island
The redesigned Dynamic Island can display up to three Live Activities at once, Apple says. Try it with supported activities you already use—for example, activities that provide ongoing updates—then see how the display fits your routine. The number shown depends on app support; it does not mean every app or Live Activity will appear there.

Also try: Siri’s beta AI features
Apple describes Siri’s AI features as a beta rollout with a more personal, conversational experience that can use personal context. The launch announcement does not establish universal availability or identical behavior across all languages and regions.
