Robust agentic AI starts with the simplest design that can complete the task, not with maximum autonomy. Use deliberate tool boundaries, explicit checks, appropriate routing, bounded parallel work, and repeatable evaluation to make behavior easier to understand and control. Add complexity only when it demonstrably improves the result.

Choose the workflow shape before adding autonomy

An agent uses an LLM to manage workflow execution and make decisions, including choosing tools. A fixed sequence that uses an LLM for one or more steps is more accurately called a workflow. That distinction matters: a predefined workflow is often easier to predict and debug, while an agent can adapt when the task or workflow state varies.

Anthropic’s Building effective agents recommends starting with the simplest solution and increasing complexity only when needed. Use these questions to decide how much autonomy the task merits:

Approach Best fit Trade-off to examine
Fixed workflow Tasks with known steps, stable inputs, and checkpoints that can be specified in advance. Predictability and easier debugging versus less flexibility when the task deviates from the expected path.
Single agent Tasks whose steps vary enough that the model needs to choose tools or actions based on the input or current state. Adaptability versus added latency, cost, and the possibility that errors compound across steps.
Multiple agents or parallel workers Tasks with independent subtasks whose outputs can be combined and checked. Potentially more work completed in parallel versus coordination, conflicting outputs, and harder-to-inspect behavior.

These are design trade-offs, not a benchmark ranking. Compare options against the task’s variability, verification needs, likely impact of mistakes, observability, latency, and cost. OpenAI’s A practical guide to building agents and Anthropic’s guidance distinguish flexible agent behavior from predefined orchestration; neither establishes that more agents or more autonomy are inherently more reliable.

1. Give the model deliberate tool boundaries

Start with an augmented model: an LLM connected to only the retrieval, tools, or memory needed for its job. Anthropic describes this as a foundational building block and recommends tailoring the model’s interface to the use case. A capability the task does not need is not a free extra; it can create another path for mistakes or unintended actions.

Design a narrow, understandable interface

  • Give each tool a clear name, purpose, input, and expected output. Describe what it can and cannot do so the model has a usable basis for choosing it.
  • Limit data and action permissions to what the task requires. Review access to files, websites, services, and external actions as part of the system boundary.
  • Separate read-only work from actions that change state where practical. Require user confirmation before consequential actions, especially when intent is unclear.
  • Make the surrounding environment part of the design review. A capable model cannot compensate for excessive permissions or an unsafe environment.

Prompt injection requires defense in depth, not a single prompt rule. Anthropic’s Trustworthy agents in practice (April 9, 2026) discusses measures such as training, traffic monitoring, red teaming, permission design, and environmental restrictions, while warning that safeguards do not guarantee immunity. It also notes that standardized, rigorous comparisons of agent resistance to prompt injection or ability to surface uncertainty are not currently established.

2. Chain steps only when each step has a job

Prompt chaining breaks a task into ordered model calls, with each call responsible for a distinct stage. It suits bounded sequential work—for example, when one stage extracts facts and a later stage uses those facts to draft an answer. It is not a reason to divide every request into multiple calls: each stage adds another place for an error, delay, or unnecessary complexity.

Put checks where errors could spread

  1. Define the purpose and expected output of each stage before adding the next call.
  2. Check intermediate results when an incorrect result would contaminate later steps. Use a programmatic check when the requirement can be expressed as a rule; reserve model judgment for criteria that genuinely require it.
  3. Stop, retry, or hand off when a check fails rather than passing a known-bad result downstream.
  4. Check the final outcome against the task’s acceptance criteria, not just whether the final response sounds plausible.

The useful property of a chain is that its stages and checkpoints are explicit. If the task needs the model to decide what to do next based on changing state, a fixed chain may be the wrong shape; use routing or agent-directed tool selection instead.

3. Route work deliberately; reserve autonomy for variable tasks

Routing sends an input or workflow state to the appropriate path, tool, or specialist. A router can use defined rules for predictable cases; model-directed selection can handle cases where the next action depends on context. OpenAI’s agent guide describes agents dynamically selecting tools according to workflow state, while Anthropic contrasts the predictability of predefined workflows with the flexibility of agents.

Keep the decision legible

  • Define the available paths and the conditions for choosing them. When rules are sufficient, prefer them to an open-ended model decision.
  • For model-directed routing, make the available actions and their boundaries clear, and record the chosen route and relevant tool activity.
  • Provide a fallback for unclear inputs, missing information, or failed tools—such as asking the user, returning to a safe workflow step, or handing control to a person.
  • Test both the route selection and what happens after selection. A correct destination does not guarantee a correct result.

Routing and autonomy are not an all-or-nothing choice. A system can use a fixed workflow for routine stages and let an agent choose among tools only at the point where task variability requires judgment.

4. Parallelize only independent work, with a plan for disagreement

Bounded parallel work can help when subtasks are genuinely independent and their results can be combined or checked—for example, collecting separate pieces of information before a synthesis step. Parallel execution is an implementation choice, not a general reliability guarantee; the cited guidance does not establish a measured reliability improvement from parallelization.

Make the merge step part of the design

  • State which outputs each worker owns and what format the combining step expects.
  • Do not parallelize steps where one depends on another’s result or where shared state could make actions interfere.
  • Specify how to handle conflicting, incomplete, or missing results. The system should flag unresolved disagreement rather than silently treating it as consensus.
  • Check the combined result against the original task, and keep permissions narrow for each worker rather than granting broad access for convenience.

Parallelism adds coordination and another layer to inspect. Use it when the task structure justifies that cost, not simply because multiple workers are available.

5. Evaluate behavior and keep people in consequential loops

Evaluation should cover the system’s actions across a task, not just the final answer. An agent can call tools, change state, and compound an earlier error while still producing a polished response. OpenAI’s Evaluate agent workflows documentation and Anthropic’s Demystifying evals for AI agents emphasize traces and repeatable evaluation as ways to inspect and compare behavior.

Build a repeatable evaluation loop

  1. Choose representative tasks. Include routine cases, ambiguous inputs, likely tool failures, and cases where the system should ask for clarification or stop.
  2. Set explicit criteria. Grade whether the system selected an appropriate path, followed tool boundaries, handled failures, and met the task’s outcome requirements.
  3. Capture traces. Keep enough information about model and tool activity to understand what happened, including route choices and intermediate actions.
  4. Verify state-changing actions in the environment. For actions that mutate state, check the actual resulting state rather than relying only on the model’s report that it succeeded.
  5. Repeat after changes. Re-run the evaluation set when prompts, routing, tools, or other behavior-affecting parts change; compare results to expose regressions.

Automated graders and datasets make comparisons more repeatable, but they do not establish every quality a deployment may require. Keep human review for consequential actions and broader requirements that automated checks cannot establish. A trace helps explain an observed run; it is not by itself proof that the system is safe or correct.

What makes the system robust is the whole boundary

Assess the model, harness, tools, and environment together. A strong model does not offset a harness that grants unnecessary access, a tool whose behavior is unclear, or an environment where a mistake can have excessive impact. Anthropic’s April 9, 2026 guidance on trustworthy agents stresses careful choices about available tools and data, permissions, and operating environments.

Frameworks can reduce implementation effort, but abstractions may also make prompts, responses, and failures harder to inspect. Understand the underlying behavior, preserve useful observability, and remove complexity that does not improve outcomes. There is no general quantitative result in the cited guidance proving that any one of these patterns raises reliability by a fixed amount; measure the behavior that matters in the system’s actual environment.
