In five-card draw, each player gets five private cards, bets, may exchange cards once, then bets again. If more than one player remains, they reveal their hands; the strongest five-card poker hand wins the pot. Before dealing, agree on the betting format and how many cards players may draw, because those house rules can vary.
What you need to know before dealing
Five-card draw uses a standard 52-card deck, with no community cards in the basic game. Each player receives a complete five-card hand face down. The goal is either to make the strongest hand at showdown or to win the pot by getting everyone else to fold. Poker.org describes a two-to-five-player setup, but that is not a universal player limit; larger games need a clear procedure for managing the deck during the draw.
A standard deck is all you need to play. Chips can make it easier to represent bets in a home game, but they are optional.
Agree on the rules first
Before the first deal, settle these details:
- Opening contribution: Players may put in an ante, or the game may use blinds. Antes are common in home games; the opening action and positions depend on the chosen structure.
- Betting format: Choose fixed-limit, pot-limit, or no-limit. These formats determine how much players may wager, not the deal-draw-showdown sequence.
- Draw limit: Set the maximum number of replacement cards allowed per player. Up to three is common in many variations, but it is not universal.
- Stakes and house procedures: Make these clear, including how the game handles a deck running short during the draw.
PokerNews outlines common betting formats and play sequence in its five-card draw rules guide. Poker.org notes that house rules can set a different draw maximum in its beginner’s guide to five-card draw.

How to play five-card draw, step by step
- Post the ante or blinds. Players make the agreed opening contribution to the pot. The game’s rules determine who acts first.
- Deal five cards face down to each player. Players look at their own hands and keep them private.
- Play the first betting round. In turn, each player may fold or continue using the actions available in the agreed structure. Depending on the situation, those actions can include checking, calling, betting, or raising. The exact order of action depends on whether the game uses antes or blinds and on the table’s rules.
- Draw replacement cards. Each player still in the hand chooses how many cards to discard, then receives the same number of replacements. A player who keeps all five cards stands pat. Apply the draw cap agreed before the deal.
- Play the second betting round. The remaining players wager again under the same betting format.
- Go to showdown if necessary. If at least two players remain after betting, they reveal their hands. The best five-card hand wins; if hands have equal value, the pot is split under PokerStars’ published rules.
The basic sequence—deal, bet, draw, bet, then showdown if needed—is described in the PokerStars Five Card Draw rules. A published Pennsylvania casino procedure is specific to that jurisdiction and should not be treated as a universal home-game rule: 58 Pa. Code § 637a.13.

| Choice | What it changes | What remains the same |
|---|---|---|
| Ante or blinds | How players contribute before cards are dealt and, depending on the structure, how opening action is organized. | The five-card deal, draw, second betting round, and possible showdown. |
| Fixed-limit, pot-limit, or no-limit | The amount a player may wager or raise. | The basic hand sequence. |
| Draw maximum | How many replacement cards a player may take in one draw. | Players may keep all five cards by standing pat; the hand still proceeds to the second betting round. |
