Strong REST microservices start with five habits: model resources around the domain, evolve APIs as versioned contracts, make retries safe, document consistent interfaces, and trace calls across services. These practices make systems easier for clients to use and teams to change without treating REST maturity as a substitute for reliability or security.
1. Model domain resources and use HTTP semantics consistently
Design the API around the things the service owns, not the internal functions or database tables it happens to use. A resource-oriented API might expose /orders/123; an operation-oriented design might instead expose an endpoint named for an action. Microsoft contrasts REST’s resource orientation with RPC’s operation orientation in its API design guidance.
Use stable, noun-based URIs, standard HTTP methods, and status codes that communicate the result. Return representations designed for clients rather than exposing database schemas, which can change independently of the public contract. Microsoft’s microservices API guidance describes an API as the contract between a service and its consumers.
Use the Richardson Maturity Model as a lens, not a checklist
Leonard Richardson’s 2008 model, as summarized by Azure, describes four levels:

- Level 0: One URI and POST for everything.
- Level 1: Separate resource URIs.
- Level 2: Use HTTP methods to express operations on resources.
- Level 3: Add hypermedia controls that guide clients to available actions.
Many production APIs stop at level 2. Hypermedia can make available actions discoverable through responses, but it also changes how clients and services must be designed. Adopt it when that flexibility is useful; do not treat the highest maturity level as a requirement for every service.
2. Treat the API as a versioned contract
Clients may deploy on a different schedule from the service, so a change that looks small internally can break consumers. Prefer additive, backward-compatible evolution: introduce optional fields or new capabilities without changing the meaning or availability of existing ones. Avoid casually removing or repurposing fields clients may already rely on.

When a change cannot remain compatible, publish a new API version and make the supported version explicit to clients. Versioning is a compatibility mechanism, not a license to change contracts unpredictably; communicate which version clients should use and provide a migration path. Azure’s API design guidance covers versioning and compatibility as part of designing the service-client contract.
3. Make mutations idempotent and retries deliberate
Retries are a normal response to timeouts and transient failures, but a client may not know whether a request reached the service before the connection failed. If it repeats a mutation that creates a charge, order, or other side effect, it can accidentally perform the action twice.

An operation is idempotent when repeating it has no additional intended side effect after the first successful application. HTTP defines GET, PUT, and DELETE as idempotent methods; POST is not guaranteed to be idempotent. For a retryable POST workflow, accept an idempotency key or token, associate it with the original request and result, and return the same outcome for a repeated request using that key. AWS recommends idempotency tokens when clients may repeat mutating requests in its Well-Architected reliability guidance.
Make retry behavior deliberate on both sides: clients should retry only appropriate failures, and services should define how duplicate requests are recognized and handled. The token mechanism should be part of the documented contract so clients know when and how to use it.

4. Document and standardize the contract
Publish an interface definition such as OpenAPI so consumers can inspect endpoints, methods, parameters, request bodies, responses, and schemas. Keep those definitions aligned with the deployed API; a specification that describes a different contract is misleading rather than helpful.
Standardize recurring interface choices across services, including error responses, pagination, filtering, and how clients follow asynchronous operations. Consistency reduces the number of service-specific exceptions a consumer must learn. Define request and response schemas explicitly, including which fields are required and how errors are represented.

5. Build observability into every call
A request that crosses several services is difficult to diagnose if each service records it in isolation. Propagate correlation or trace context between calls, and collect logs, metrics, and distributed traces so teams can follow a request through the system. Azure’s microservices API guidance identifies observability as a design consideration for service APIs.
Use these signals for different questions: logs provide event detail, metrics show patterns and rates, and distributed traces expose the path and timing of a request across services. Consistent context propagation connects those views and helps locate where latency or failure occurred.
How to weigh API design choices
There is no single design that wins on every dimension. Compare options against the needs of the consumers and the system:
- Backward compatibility: Can existing clients continue working as the service evolves?
- Retry and failure behavior: Can the client safely recover from timeouts or transient errors?
- Client ergonomics: Is the contract predictable and straightforward to consume?
- Payload efficiency: Does the response provide the needed data without unnecessary transfer?
- Security and access control: Does the design fit how callers authenticate and what they are allowed to do?
- Observability: Can teams connect a client request to activity and failures across service boundaries?
An API gateway can centralize some policies, but it does not replace clear ownership of each service’s contract or its versioning decisions.
