Ultra HD Blu-ray can add 4K video and HDR that DVD does not offer, but a format label alone cannot prove that every disc will look dramatically better. Three well-documented film editions—2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner 2049 and Mad Max: Fury Road—illustrate what to check before deciding whether UHD is worth the upgrade. The original title calls for four discs, but the available official edition evidence supports only these three distinct films.
What UHD Blu-ray can add over DVD
The Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray supports UHD video and HDR. It describes HDR as a way to show high-contrast scenes with greater clarity and detail. Those are format capabilities, not a controlled, title-by-title comparison proving how much better a particular UHD edition looks than its DVD counterpart.
Storage capacity also differs: the Association lists DVD at 4.7 GB and says Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray offer five to twenty times that capacity, enabling more data for higher-volume video. The 4.7 GB figure is a storage specification, not a measurement of picture quality. Blu-ray Disc Association: Ultra HD Benefits and Blu-ray Disc Association: format differences
Three film editions worth comparing
2001: A Space Odyssey
Criterion describes its edition as a 4K digital restoration, with the 4K UHD disc presented in Dolby Vision HDR. That makes it a useful example of how a restoration and HDR presentation can accompany a classic film’s UHD edition. The edition information does not establish a direct visual comparison with a DVD or guarantee the same benefit on every television and player. Criterion Collection edition page

Blade Runner 2049
Sony Pictures lists both a 4K UHD edition and a DVD edition. This confirms that viewers can compare two formats for the same film, but Sony’s listing does not give a detailed technical comparison of the editions’ masters. Check the specific release you plan to buy rather than assuming the format names tell the whole story. Sony Pictures Japan product listing
Mad Max: Fury Road
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced a UHD Blu-ray release with 4K resolution and HDR. The announcement confirms those features for the release; it is not a DVD-versus-UHD viewing test. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announcement

How to decide whether a UHD edition is worth buying
- Check the actual edition. Look for a stated restoration or master and the HDR format, rather than relying on 4K branding alone.
- Confirm your equipment. UHD discs require a compatible Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray Disc Association says most UHD players also play DVDs. Check that your display and playback chain support the HDR format used by the disc. Blu-ray Disc Association: Ultra HD benefits
- Compare the cost of upgrading. Prices and stock change, so compare the current price of the UHD edition with the DVD you own or would otherwise buy.
These examples show the kinds of UHD features and edition details that can make an upgrade appealing; they do not establish that UHD is a dramatic improvement for every film, room or setup. For a specific purchase, the edition’s restoration, HDR presentation, equipment compatibility and current cost matter more than the format name on its own.
