It supports up to 3840 × 2160 resolution, HDR and wider color; standard Blu-ray is Full HD at 1920 × 1080. To play an Ultra HD disc, you need an Ultra HD Blu-ray player. That player can also play standard Blu-ray discs, but a standard Blu-ray player cannot play Ultra HD discs.
How do the formats compare?
| Feature | Standard Blu-ray | Ultra HD Blu-ray (4K Blu-ray) |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum stated resolution | 1920 × 1080 pixels (1080p Full HD), according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. | Up to 3840 × 2160 pixels, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. |
| HDR and wider color | The cited Blu-ray Disc Association page does not identify these as standard Blu-ray format capabilities. | Supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and a wider color spectrum; a compatible display is needed to show those features. |
| Progressive frame rates | The cited standard Blu-ray page does not provide a comparable frame-rate list. | The association lists 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames per second. |
| Disc capacity listed by the association | 25 GB single-layer; 50 GB dual-layer. | 66 GB dual-layer; 100 GB triple-layer. |
| Player compatibility | Plays standard Blu-ray discs, but not Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. | Plays Ultra HD Blu-ray discs and standard Blu-ray discs. |
These are format specifications, not a promise that every disc uses the maximum resolution, frame rate or capacity. The association’s figures describe what each format supports.

What changes in the picture?
Resolution and detail
Ultra HD Blu-ray supports up to 3840 × 2160 pixels—four times the pixel count of 1920 × 1080 Full HD, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. That gives the format more potential image detail, particularly on a 4K display. It does not establish that every Ultra HD release looks sharper than every standard Blu-ray: the result also depends on the particular transfer and viewing setup.
HDR and color
Ultra HD Blu-ray supports HDR, which can expand the range between bright and dark parts of an image, as well as a wider color spectrum. To see HDR, the connected display must support the relevant capability. A disc’s format support alone cannot make a non-HDR television show HDR.
#1 Best Overall
- Runtime: 95 minutes
Resolution and HDR are separate aspects of the image. A 4K television may upscale a standard Blu-ray image for its screen, but upscaling does not turn the disc into an Ultra HD Blu-ray or give the player the ability to read one.
What changes in sound, motion and disc capacity?
The Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray supports progressive playback rates of 24, 25, 50 and 60 frames per second, up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed surround sound, and object-based immersive formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The association lists Ultra HD discs at 66 GB for dual-layer and 100 GB for triple-layer, compared with 25 GB single-layer and 50 GB dual-layer standard Blu-ray discs. These are format capabilities and listed capacities, not a claim that every release uses them.

- Return to Pandora for the third chapter of Marine turned Na’vi leader Jake Sully and his family. Reeling from one death, the Sullys set out to prevent another — aided by the Wind Traders. But on the way, they’re attacked by the Ash People, who blame Eywa for their ravaged home. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes may affect photosensitive viewers.
The association’s standard Blu-ray page also lists support for high-definition audio, but it does not provide an equivalent frame-rate or object-audio comparison there. Avoid treating an unlisted comparison as proof that a specific title or player cannot offer a feature.
Will your player and television play an Ultra HD disc?
An Ultra HD Blu-ray player is required to play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc. A standard Blu-ray player cannot play that format. The compatibility guidance from the Blu-ray Disc Association confirms that an Ultra HD player can also play standard Blu-ray discs.
Rank #3
- Harry Potter: 8 Film Collection (4K)
- You have a standard Blu-ray player: It can play standard Blu-ray discs, but not Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.
- You have an Ultra HD Blu-ray player: It can play both Ultra HD and standard Blu-ray discs.
- You have an HDTV rather than a 4K display: The association says an Ultra HD player can output standard HDTV video and convert HDR to SDR to suit the connected television. That fallback does not let a standard Blu-ray player decode an Ultra HD disc.
- You want the native 4K resolution and HDR: The connected display must support those features, as well as the player and disc.
Is Ultra HD Blu-ray worth choosing?
Choose Ultra HD Blu-ray when you want a disc format that supports 4K resolution, HDR and wider color, and you have—or plan to get—a compatible player and display. Standard Blu-ray remains the compatible choice for a standard Blu-ray player and provides 1080p Full HD. If you already own standard Blu-ray discs, an Ultra HD player can continue to play them.
Do not decide on resolution alone: the format establishes technical capabilities, not the quality of an individual film transfer. The cited specifications do not identify the source resolution or mastering history of any particular title, so those details cannot be inferred from the disc label alone.
