Ultra HD Blu-ray discs—the 4K format—are region-free, according to Sony Support. Standard Blu-ray discs are different: they can be coded for Region A, B, or C, and a player generally plays only discs coded for its own region unless its documentation says otherwise. A 4K label on a movie package does not guarantee that every disc in the box is region-free; check each disc separately.
Are 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs region-locked?
No. Sony Support says Ultra HD Blu-ray discs are region-free and can play on devices that support Ultra HD Blu-ray, regardless of the region where they were purchased. The key condition is format support: a standard Blu-ray player cannot play an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc, as the Blu-ray Disc Association explains.
“Region-free” does not mean that any disc works in any player. The player must support Ultra HD Blu-ray, and the disc must be the UHD format. A standard Blu-ray disc included in the same package can still have a regional restriction.
Which Blu-ray discs use regions A, B, and C?
Standard Blu-ray discs may carry one of three region codes. Sony’s support guidance, last modified May 25, 2022, gives these broad geographic groupings:

| B | Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand |
| C | Asia except Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and other areas of Southeast Asia |
These groupings are a guide, not a substitute for checking the particular disc and player. Sony says the code is shown on the disc or on the back of its case. See Sony’s Blu-ray region-code guidance for the listed countries and areas.
What does “region-free” mean for a standard Blu-ray?
Sony notes that “Region FREE” is not an official region setting. A disc described as region-free may have no region flag or may carry all three region flags. The term alone is not enough to confirm compatibility: inspect the disc or case and consult the player’s manual.

Will a 4K Blu-ray player play standard Blu-rays?
Yes. The Blu-ray Disc Association says Ultra HD Blu-ray players play current Blu-ray content. That means a UHD player can be a practical upgrade if you want to watch UHD discs and keep using standard Blu-ray discs. It does not, by itself, remove regional restrictions on standard Blu-rays; check the player’s documentation for its region behavior.
UHD playback also requires an Ultra HD Blu-ray-capable player: the Blu-ray Disc Association says UHD discs will not play in a standard Blu-ray player. Most UHD players also play DVDs, but not all, so confirm DVD support for the specific model if you need it. The BDA’s Ultra HD Blu-ray format guidance covers player and disc compatibility.

How to check a disc or combo pack before buying
- Identify the format of each disc. Look for “Ultra HD Blu-ray” or “4K Ultra HD” on the disc or its packaging, versus standard Blu-ray. The format determines whether you need a UHD-capable player.
- Check the region marking. For a standard Blu-ray, look for A, B, or C on the disc or the back of the case. Do not rely only on a seller’s “region-free” description.
- Check your player manual. Confirm that it supports the disc format and, for standard Blu-ray, the relevant region. Player documentation can specify exceptions to the general regional rule.
- Inspect every disc in a multi-disc edition. A combo pack may include a region-free UHD disc and a standard Blu-ray with its own region marking. The package’s 4K label does not establish that the included standard Blu-ray will work in your player.
What 4K describes—and what it does not
“4K” refers to image resolution, not a region code. The Blu-ray Disc Association identifies Ultra HD resolution as 3840 × 2160 pixels, compared with 1920 × 1080 for Full HD. Its format material describes UHD as four times the pixels, supports HDR and frame rates up to 60 frames per second, and lists 66 GB dual-layer and 100 GB triple-layer disc capacities. These are format specifications, not evidence about regional restrictions. The available official guidance does not establish what proportion of standard Blu-ray titles use region coding.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When would you need a multi-region player?
A multi-region standard Blu-ray player is relevant if you own standard Blu-ray discs coded for a region different from your player. It is not needed to get around UHD disc region coding, because UHD discs are region-free; you still need a UHD-capable player to play them. Before buying a particular multi-region model, verify its supported regions and operation in the device documentation. No specific modified player or warranty terms are established here.
