Start with Settings > Windows Update, then check optional driver updates if the device is still missing a driver. If Windows cannot find one, use Device Manager to search or install a driver folder from the device maker; as a last resort, download a compatible driver from the manufacturer’s official support page.
Before you install a driver
Confirm which device is affected and, if possible, note its exact name and your computer or device model. When downloading a package, match it to the device and the Windows version and architecture specified by the manufacturer. Use Windows Update or the official manufacturer’s site—not third-party driver-download sites. The four routes below overlap: Device Manager can search for a driver online or install files you have already downloaded.
1. Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any offered updates and restart if prompted.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the preferred way to get driver updates. It downloads and installs recommended drivers offered for your device; it may not offer every driver you need. Microsoft’s Windows driver guidance explains this route and the optional updates page.
2. Check optional driver updates
Optional drivers are not installed automatically, so check this page if Windows Update did not resolve the problem.

- Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Select the relevant driver, choose Download and install, and restart if needed.
Choose a driver that matches the affected device. If no relevant update appears, continue to Device Manager or the manufacturer’s support page.
3. Search or install a driver with Device Manager
Search automatically
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the category for the device, right-click it, and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows finds a driver, follow the prompts to install it. If it does not, continue to Windows Update or the official manufacturer route. Microsoft’s Device Manager instructions cover searching, manual installation, reinstalling, and rolling back a driver.

Install a driver folder you already downloaded
- Download the package from the computer or device manufacturer’s official support page and extract it first if necessary.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected device and select Update driver > Browse my computer for drivers.
- Select the folder containing the driver files and follow the prompts.
Use this option only with a package intended for the exact device and compatible Windows version and architecture. A manufacturer’s package may also include its own installation instructions or installer.
4. Download from the official manufacturer
If Windows Update and automatic Device Manager search do not find a suitable driver, go to the official support page for your PC or device maker. Search using the exact computer or device model, then select a package compatible with your Windows version and architecture. Follow the instructions provided with that package; installation steps vary by manufacturer.

Microsoft advises using the manufacturer’s official site when a driver is not available through Windows. Avoid third-party driver-download sites, and do not assume that a package for a similar model will work.
Understand driver dates and signatures
A driver date is not proof that it is outdated
The date shown for a driver is metadata set by its provider. Microsoft says that for Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, as well as Windows Server 2025, Windows uses driver targeting information to select an appropriate driver; a displayed date that looks old does not, by itself, mean the driver is obsolete. If Windows blocks a driver
Do not disable driver-signature protections as a general workaround. Check Windows Update for a signed, WHCP-certified version, then check the official manufacturer support page or ask the vendor whether a certified version is available. Reinstall the device driver
Save your work first. In Device Manager, uninstall the affected device and restart the PC. Windows will attempt to reinstall its driver. Some devices, including printers, may require a manual reinstall instead.

Roll back a recent driver update
If the problem began after a driver update, open the device’s Properties > Driver tab in Device Manager and choose Roll Back Driver, if available. Administrator permissions are required.
Use the displayed error code to narrow the problem
If Device Manager shows an error code, look up that specific code and follow its device-specific troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly installing unrelated packages. Microsoft’s Device Manager error-code guidance explains possible remedies and when to contact the hardware vendor.
