Chrome’s built-in Split view displays two tabs side by side inside one Chrome window. To start it, right-click a tab or link, or drag a tab to the left or right edge of the target Chrome window; no flag or command is required.
These instructions apply to Chrome on a computer. Chrome Split view is different from Windows or macOS window tiling and ChromeOS’s separate-window split screen.
Before you start
Open the two pages you want to compare in tabs within the same Chrome window. Google’s current instructions do not specify a minimum Chrome version, but updating Chrome is sensible if the commands below are missing.
To check for updates, open More ⋮ → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks automatically and offers a restart when an update is ready.

1. Add an inactive tab from its context menu
This is usually the quickest method when both tabs are already open.
- Open both tabs in the same Chrome window.
- Right-click the tab you want to place into Split view.
- Select New split view with current tab.
The selected inactive tab appears beside the tab that was active before you opened the menu. Both views remain part of the same Chrome window.
2. Add another tab from the active tab’s menu
Chrome uses a different command when you right-click the tab currently in use.
- Right-click the active tab.
- Select Add tab to new split view.
- Choose another open tab from the list, or use the blank side Chrome creates to search or open a page.
The wording depends on which tab you right-click: use New split view with current tab for an inactive tab and Add tab to new split view for the active tab.

3. Drag a tab to the edge of the Chrome window
Drag-and-drop is enabled by default. It is useful when the tab you need is visible in the tab strip and you do not want to open a context menu.
- Click and hold the tab you want to move.
- Drag it to the left or right edge of the target Chrome window.
- Keep holding it until a plus icon and the label Create split view appear.
- Release the tab.
The dragged tab is added to the target window’s Split view, rather than necessarily becoming a separate Chrome window.
If dragging does nothing, open More ⋮ → Settings → Appearance. Make sure Allow split view drag-and-drop on left or right edge of window is on. This setting controls dragging; it does not disable the context-menu or link-menu commands.
4. Open a link directly in Split view
You can create the second view without opening the destination in a normal tab first.

- Right-click a link on the page you are viewing.
- Select Open link in split view.
Chrome opens the linked page alongside the current page. This is useful for checking a source while writing, viewing a product page beside a comparison article, or keeping documentation visible while following instructions.
Use the toolbar control and manage the views
When Split view is active, Chrome places a Split view control on the left side of the address bar. Select it to choose another tab to add or manage the arrangement. The icon’s appearance depends on which view is active.
The toolbar menu includes these controls:

| Close left or right view | Closes the selected side. |
| Reverse position | Swaps the left and right views. |
| Pin | Keeps the Split view control visible on the toolbar. |
Each view also has a Close control at its bottom-right corner. To keep the toolbar control permanently visible, right-click the Split view icon and select Pin.
Chrome Split view is not operating-system split screen
Chrome Split view keeps two tabs visible inside one Chrome window. Windows snapping and macOS window tiling arrange separate application windows. They are different features with different controls.

Chromebooks also have a separate ChromeOS window-splitting feature. ChromeOS commands such as Split and Partial, and shortcuts such as Alt + [ and Alt + ], arrange separate windows. They do not activate Chrome’s in-window tab Split view.
Common problems
- The menu label does not match an article: Check whether you right-clicked an active or inactive tab. The labels differ.
- The Split view icon is missing: It appears when Split view is active. You can pin it after it appears.
- An old guide says to use chrome://flags: The current built-in feature does not require a flag, command-line command, or address-bar command.
- The browser window is very narrow: Dialogs may overlap part of the other view because there is not enough room. Chrome tries to place each dialog over the pane that triggered it.
- Print preview covers the whole window: Chrome centers the Print dialog over the entire Chrome window rather than confining it to one narrow pane.
Chrome can show camera, microphone, and screen-sharing indicators for all visible pages, including the pane that is not currently active.

How do I enable Split view in Google Chrome?
Open two tabs in the same Chrome window, then right-click a tab. Choose New split view with current tab for an inactive tab or Add tab to new split view for the active tab. You can also right-click a link and choose Open link in split view.
Do I need to enable a Chrome flag for Split view?
No. Chrome’s current built-in Split view does not require chrome://flags, a command-line option, or an address-bar command.

Why can’t I drag a tab to create Split view?
Check More → Settings → Appearance and make sure Allow split view drag-and-drop on left or right edge of window is on. It is enabled by default, but may have been turned off.
Does Chrome Split view open a new window?
No. It displays two tabs simultaneously inside one Chrome window. Windows and ChromeOS split-screen features arrange separate windows.
How do I exit Chrome Split view?
Select the Split view control beside the address bar and choose Separate split view. You can also use a view’s bottom-right Close control to close that side.
The Bottom Line
For tabs you already have open, right-click the appropriate tab and use New split view with current tab or Add tab to new split view. For a new destination, right-click its link and choose Open link in split view. Dragging a tab to a window edge is another option; drag-and-drop is enabled by default and can be controlled in Chrome’s Appearance settings.
