There is no single best Python IDE for every developer. Eric7 suits people who want an extensible, integrated environment; Wing targets professional project work; Pyzo is built around interactive scientific computing; and Thonny keeps the path into Python simple. Here is how to choose among the four, with current versions and setup details checked against their project pages as of October 7, 2026.

Which of these Python IDEs fits your work?

IDE Best fit Interpreter setup Notable strengths
Eric (eric7) Developers who want a feature-rich, extensible IDE Install into a Python virtual environment; the project’s installation guide recommends this approach. Editor, code completion, class browser and version-control features.
Wing Professional project development, especially when debugging and testing matter Interpreter setup details are not stated on the cited downloads page. Wing Classic includes debugging, refactoring, remote development and unit testing; Wing Pro adds AI coding-agent workflows.
Pyzo Interactive scientific and exploratory computing Install a separate Python environment as well as Pyzo. Editor, interactive shell and tools, with Windows, macOS and Linux installers.
Thonny People learning Python or seeking a low-friction setup Windows and macOS installers bundle Python 3.14; a portable Windows build and pip installation for an existing Python setup are also offered. Beginner-oriented environment with a bundled-interpreter option.

These are workflow distinctions, not a performance ranking. The original 2023 comparison introduced the four tools, but its product snapshots are historical; current details below come from project and vendor pages.

Eric (eric7): an integrated IDE you can extend

Eric is written in Python and built on Qt. Its project describes eric7 as the stable version based on PyQt6 and Qt6. It combines an editor with features such as code completion, a class browser and version-control support, making it a candidate for developers who prefer an integrated workspace over a minimal editor. See the eric IDE project.

The trade-off is setup: you should be comfortable installing a Python package and managing an environment. Eric’s installation instructions recommend a virtual environment. The project’s release news lists eric 26.9, released August 30, 2026; consult the release news for the current release information.

Wing: professional debugging and development options

Wing is the clearest commercial, professional-oriented choice in this group. Wingware’s downloads page lists Wing 12.0.2, released August 13, 2026, and separates Wing Classic from Wing Pro. Classic includes core debugging, refactoring, remote development and unit testing. Pro adds AI coding-agent workflows, and the vendor lists a 30-day trial of Pro features. Check Wingware’s downloads page for current editions and availability; current pricing is not stated there in the information cited here.

Choose Wing if those integrated project features match your day-to-day work. If you mainly need a simple learning environment or an interactive scientific shell, the other tools in this list are more directly positioned for those jobs.

Pyzo: an editor and shell for interactive computing

Pyzo is a free, open-source interactive computing environment organized around an editor, shell and tools. That combination makes it a natural fit for experimenting with code and scientific workflows where you want to run snippets in an interactive session rather than work only through a conventional edit-and-run loop. Pyzo’s homepage lists version 4.22.0, released July 22, 2026. See the Pyzo homepage.

Plan on choosing and installing Python separately: Pyzo and the Python environment are distinct parts of the setup. The project provides installers for Windows, macOS and Linux and explains the process in its getting-started guide.

Thonny: a straightforward starting point for Python

Thonny is oriented toward beginners and reduces setup friction with installers that bundle Python. Its official download page lists version 5.0.0 and Python 3.14 bundled installers for Windows and macOS. It also offers a portable Windows build and a pip installation option for people who want to use an existing Python installation. The page does not state a release date for version 5.0.0, so treat the version and bundled Python details as the current listing rather than a dated release announcement. Check Thonny’s official site before installing.

Choose by setup and workflow

  • Choose Thonny if you are learning Python and want an installer that can supply Python for you.
  • Choose Eric if you want a Qt-based, feature-rich IDE and are comfortable managing a virtual environment.
  • Choose Wing if your project work benefits from integrated debugging, refactoring, remote development or unit testing, and you are considering a commercial IDE.
  • Choose Pyzo if an interactive shell is central to how you explore or develop code, and you are comfortable setting up Python separately.

Before settling on one, confirm that it supports your operating system and the Python environment you intend to use. For Wing, compare Classic and Pro against the specific features you need; for Pyzo, account for the separate interpreter setup; for Eric, follow the virtual-environment guidance; and for Thonny, verify the installer’s bundled Python version on the official page.
