A useful RYOBI starter lineup for many homeowners is a drill/driver, an impact driver, a circular saw, and an oscillating multi-tool. They handle different jobs—drilling and everyday fastening, driving larger fasteners, making straight cuts, and detail work—but “need” depends on the projects you plan to tackle. If you are starting from zero, begin with a drill/driver; add the others when a project calls for them.

Which RYOBI tools are useful for common DIY projects?

1. Drill/driver: drilling holes and everyday screwdriving

A drill/driver is the most broadly useful first tool in this group. Use it to drill holes and drive screws for tasks such as assembling furniture, installing hardware, or putting up shelves. RYOBI lists the PCL206 drill/driver in its US PCL1600K2 kit at up to 515 in-lbs of torque, with two speed ranges and a 1/2-inch chuck; those specifications apply to that model, not every RYOBI drill. RYOBI’s PCL1600K2 kit page.

2. Impact driver: driving larger or longer fasteners

An impact driver is designed for fastening jobs where a drill/driver may feel less suited, particularly driving longer or larger screws or handling many fasteners. RYOBI describes its impact mechanism as delivering rotational force. The PCL235 included in the cited US kit is listed by RYOBI at up to 1,800 in-lbs of torque; that is a manufacturer specification for this model, not a comparative test. RYOBI’s PCL1600K2 kit page and RYOBI UK’s tool descriptions.

3. Circular saw: straight cuts in wood and sheet material

A circular saw is useful when a project calls for straight cuts in boards or sheet material. The cited US kit includes a 5-1/2-inch saw. Choose the blade and saw size for the material and cut you need; the kit’s inclusion of a saw does not make it suitable for every material or cut. RYOBI’s PCL1600K2 kit page.

  • Work light has a multi-functional design capable of sitting flat on battery, on end or hanging for ultimate lighting versatility; swivel head directs light where needed

4. Oscillating multi-tool: detail work and awkward spots

An oscillating multi-tool is a flexible option for detail jobs, including plunge or flush cuts and sanding in tight or awkward spaces. RYOBI lists a variable speed dial on the PCL430 in the US kit and describes applications involving drywall, metal, wood, and plastic. Select the accessory for the material and task. RYOBI’s PCL1600K2 kit page.

Which tool should you buy first?

For a homeowner starting without power tools, a drill/driver is the practical first purchase because it covers both basic drilling and common screwdriving. Add an impact driver if you expect to drive many or larger fasteners. Choose a circular saw when your projects involve straight cuts in wood or sheet material, and an oscillating multi-tool when you need controlled detail work or access in a confined area.

Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Lithium-Ion Cordless (10-Tool) Combo Kit with (1) 4.0 Ah Battery and (1) 1.5 Ah Battery, Charger and Bag

You do not have to buy all four at once. Match each purchase to a project you expect to do, and consider whether borrowing or renting a less frequently used tool makes more sense. The four tools address distinct jobs; they are not a universal checklist for every DIYer.

What is in the cited RYOBI combo kits?

Kit contents vary by model and region, so compare the exact product number and package listing rather than relying on a generic “four-tool” or “six-tool” description. RYOBI’s cited US and Canadian kits illustrate the difference:

How to choose a kit without buying tools you will not use

  • Start with your project list. Identify whether you need drilling, frequent heavy fastening, straight cuts, or detail work; buy for those tasks rather than the largest tool count.
  • Check every included model. Similar kit names can contain different tools. Compare model numbers and whether the tools fit your intended work.
  • Confirm battery count and capacity. Battery quantity is not the same as battery capacity. The cited US page specifies two batteries; capacity is not stated in the cited Canadian page.
  • Verify the charger and accessories. Both cited kits list a charger and accessories, but check the package listing for the specific items you need.
  • Read the warranty for your market. The cited US and Canadian pages each state a three-year manufacturer warranty; review local terms and conditions on the listing.
  • Confirm regional availability. Do not assume a kit sold in one country has the same model mix or package in another.

These listings document particular RYOBI kits and model specifications; they do not establish that RYOBI tools outperform other brands. Compare the actual package and local terms against your needs before choosing.
