1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPeople may regret buying a 3D printer when they choose a process that does not fit their needs, overlook ongoing costs, underestimate the time and troubleshooting involved, or have no suitable project or workspace. Those are practical reasons to pause—not proof that most owners regret their purchase. No representative regret-rate figure is established by the sources cited here.
1. The printer’s tradeoffs did not match what they wanted to make
“3D printer” covers different processes, materials, and workflows. A machine that suits one kind of project may be inconvenient or unsuitable for another. Before choosing a printer, start with the objects you want to make and the materials and workspace they require.
FFF and resin printing are different workflows
In fused filament fabrication (FFF), a printer melts thermoplastic filament and lays it down through a moving extruder. Vat polymerization, often called resin printing, uses UV light to cure photopolymer resin. These processes differ in materials and handling, so the choice is not simply a matter of which printer has the most attractive specifications. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) overview describes both processes and potential hazards that vary by printer, material, task, and controls.
Match the machine to the actual job
Compare the printer’s supported materials and build volume with the size and type of items you expect to make. Consider setup and calibration, maintenance, support, print duration, and any post-processing the chosen process requires. A larger build volume or faster advertised speed does not by itself mean a printer is a better fit for your particular projects.

2. They budgeted for the printer, not ownership
The purchase price is only one part of the cost. Filament or resin must be replenished, and supports and failed prints consume material without producing a usable finished object. Nozzles, extruder gears, build plates, and other wear parts may also need replacement. The total depends on how often you print, what you make, which materials you use, and how much maintenance the machine needs.
UltiMaker’s total-cost-of-ownership discussion also calls attention to service, warranties, and the way manufacturers define consumables. When comparing machines, check what is included and what future servicing or replacement parts may cost rather than assuming the initial price represents the full commitment.

3. They underestimated the time and learning involved
Printing takes more than pressing a button. Depending on the machine and the job, the process can include assembly, setup, calibration, preparing or slicing a model, waiting for the print, removing supports, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Designing original objects adds the separate learning curve of computer-aided design (CAD) and repeated trial and error.
Some printers automate parts of setup, but automation does not eliminate print duration or the need to choose settings and materials that suit the model. Common FFF problems include poor bed adhesion, warping, stringing, extrusion problems, layer separation, and clogged nozzles. Creality’s troubleshooting guide offers examples and recommends changing one variable at a time; its suggestions are general guidance, so check them against the instructions for your specific printer and filament.

4. They had no clear use or suitable place to print
This is a practical fit issue: a printer is less likely to feel worthwhile if you cannot name recurring projects that justify the time, materials, and upkeep. Before buying, identify a few things you genuinely expect to print and check that the candidate machine can make them with materials you can handle and obtain.
The workspace matters, too. NIOSH identifies potential exposure to ultrafine particles and chemicals, as well as heat, moving parts, electrical hazards, and noise. The hazards depend on the printer, material, task, and setting; they are not identical for every consumer machine. In its July 29, 2024 bulletin, NIOSH says, “Users should be aware of the potential health and safety risks and take appropriate safety measures when 3D printing.” It discusses engineering controls such as proper ventilation and HEPA filtration, with administrative measures and personal protective equipment lower in the hierarchy of controls. Choose controls appropriate to the specific printer, materials, and space rather than assuming one solution fits every setup.

U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff have also identified potential hazards across raw-material storage and use, fabrication, and the eventual use of a printed consumer product. The staff document, “Safety Concerns Associated with 3D Printing and 3D-Printed Consumer Products”, explicitly says it has not been reviewed or accepted by the Commission; it should not be treated as a Commission finding or a certification rule.
