To update a smart TV, connect it to the internet and run the software-update check in Settings or Support. You can also enable automatic updates or, if the exact model supports it, install firmware from a USB drive. Menu names and available methods vary by brand, model, and software generation, so use your TV maker’s instructions when the steps differ.
Before you start
Keep the TV connected to power and, for an online update, connect it to your home network. If you plan to use USB, first confirm that the manufacturer supports that method for your exact model. Never install firmware intended for a different TV.
1. Check for an update in the TV’s settings
Open the software-update option in the TV’s Settings or Support menu, then choose the option to check for updates. On newer LG webOS TVs, the documented path is All Settings → Support → Software Update → Check for Updates. The route is an example, not a universal menu path. LG’s software update instructions include paths for different webOS generations.
If an update is available, follow the TV’s on-screen directions. The download and installation process can vary, and the TV may restart. Keep it connected to power until the process finishes.

2. Enable automatic updates
If your TV offers automatic software updates, turn them on in its update settings. With a network connection, supported LG TVs can update automatically when automatic updates are enabled. Sony recommends enabling the relevant automatic-check or automatic-download option on supported Google TV and Android TV models. The setting name and behavior depend on the model. See Sony’s software update instructions for model-specific guidance.
Automatic updating can reduce the need to check manually, but it does not mean every TV downloads or installs updates in the same way. If you are unsure whether your set is current, use its manual update check.

3. Run the platform’s manual update check
Some smart TV platforms provide a dedicated manual check. For Roku devices, the official menu path is Home → Settings → System → Software update → Check Now. Roku says its devices also check for updates automatically, generally at startup and periodically. These instructions apply to Roku devices; other TV platforms use different menus. 4. Install an update from USB, if your model supports it
A USB update may be an option when the TV cannot connect to the internet, but availability and preparation steps are model-specific. LG describes downloading firmware for the TV model from its support site and installing it from USB. Sony also documents USB installation for situations without internet access. Roku documents USB updating for some Roku TV situations where the TV is not connected. Use the firmware and instructions for your exact model: LG support, Sony Support, and Roku Support.

Do not assume that any USB drive or firmware file will work. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the required file, drive preparation, and installation process. A USB drive is not needed for a routine update over the internet.
Keep the TV powered during installation
Do not unplug the TV or interrupt power while firmware is installing. Sony Support warns: “Loss of power during the installation of the firmware update may cause the TV set to become unresponsive or require repair.” Follow the on-screen directions and wait for the TV to finish before using it.

If the update option or installation fails
- The menu path does not match: Search Settings or Support for “Software Update” or “System Update,” then consult the official instructions for your model and software generation.
- No update appears: Confirm the TV is connected to the internet, then run the manual check. An update may not be available for your model at that time.
- You cannot connect the TV: Check whether the exact model supports USB installation and follow the maker’s firmware-download and drive-preparation steps.
- The TV is installing an update: Keep power connected and let the process complete. Do not remove the USB drive if the manufacturer’s instructions say to leave it connected.
Updates may add features, fixes, or other improvements, but what an update changes depends on the product and release. Check your manufacturer’s release information rather than assuming a particular benefit.
