If you need structured results from Google Scholar itself, SerpApi documents a Google Scholar search engine that returns organic results. Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and Crossref are useful for scholarly article data, but they query their own databases and deposits—not Google Scholar. The available documentation supports four distinct choices, not a verified top five, so this guide compares those four by source and use case rather than claiming a performance ranking.
Does Google Scholar have an API?
The documentation reviewed for this guide does not establish a current Google-provided API for Google Scholar. A 2021 university dissertation says there is no official API, but that is secondary and dated evidence, not a current Google policy statement. The practical distinction is between a third-party service that extracts Scholar search results and scholarly metadata APIs that return records from their own systems.
SerpApi documents an engine named google_scholar for retrieving structured Google Scholar organic results. That makes it the directly relevant option here when the requirement is specifically to obtain Google Scholar search results as data. It is a vendor-documented service; the documentation is not an independent test or guarantee of coverage, accuracy, or reliability.
How these four options differ
| Service | Underlying source | Best fit | Access and limits established here |
|---|---|---|---|
| SerpApi Google Scholar API | Google Scholar search results via SerpApi’s documented google_scholar engine |
Structured results for Scholar-specific searches | Requires an API key. Current pricing, rate limits, and extraction stability are not established here. |
| Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API | Semantic Scholar’s scholarly graph | Paper and author data when Semantic Scholar’s records meet the need | Documentation describes paper and author retrieval. Current pricing and rate limits are not established here. |
| OpenAlex API | OpenAlex’s scholarly graph | Queries spanning works, authors, sources, institutions, and topics | Basic use is described as free to start; a free API key increases the daily budget, with pay-as-you-go for heavier use. Verify current terms. |
| Crossref REST API | Publication metadata deposited by Crossref members and trusted sources | Bibliographic records and related metadata supplied to Crossref | Crossref says no signup is required. Its REST API documentation was last updated 2020-04-08, so verify operational details before relying on them. |
This is a use-case shortlist, not a measured ranking. The available documentation does not provide comparable independent benchmarks for performance, coverage, accuracy, or reliability. “Best” therefore depends first on which source you need, then on fields, query controls, access terms, and reuse rights.

1. SerpApi Google Scholar API: extract Scholar search results
Choose this when the output must reflect Google Scholar search results rather than a separate scholarly database. SerpApi’s documentation names the engine google_scholar, accepts a query, and describes options for citations, date limits, pagination, localization, result types, and filters. It returns structured organic results and requires an API key.
Those capabilities make it the only directly documented Google Scholar extraction choice among the four covered here. They do not mean that every Scholar result will be available, that the result order is guaranteed, or that the service has been independently tested for completeness. Confirm current parameters, costs, and usage limits in SerpApi’s documentation before building a production workflow.
Use a Scholar extraction service when your question is about what a Scholar query returns—for example, a search workflow that needs Scholar-specific result types or citation-related options. If the task is instead to retrieve records from a scholarly graph or a publisher-deposited metadata source, compare the following APIs rather than treating them as interchangeable Scholar endpoints.
2. Semantic Scholar Academic Graph API: retrieve Semantic Scholar records
Semantic Scholar’s Academic Graph API is documented for paper and author retrieval. Its documentation identifies paperId as the primary paper identifier and corpusId as another identifier. These identifiers belong to Semantic Scholar’s system; do not assume they reproduce Google Scholar identifiers, ordering, or coverage.

It is a reasonable candidate when your application can use Semantic Scholar’s own records and the task centers on paper or author data. Before selecting it, check the current API documentation for the specific fields and request behavior your workflow needs. The evidence summarized here does not establish current access limits, prices, or comparative record coverage.
3. OpenAlex API: query a broad scholarly graph
OpenAlex documents a graph that includes works, authors, sources, institutions, and topics. Its query capabilities include search, filters, sorting, grouping, pagination, and field selection. This breadth can suit workflows that need to explore relationships or retrieve different scholarly entity types rather than reproduce one Google Scholar search.
OpenAlex documentation describes basic use as free to start, says a free API key increases the daily budget, and provides pay-as-you-go for heavier use. These are access-model descriptions, not a substitute for checking current terms: budgets, pricing, and operational limits can change. Verify them before estimating costs or relying on a particular request volume.
4. Crossref REST API: retrieve deposited publication metadata
Crossref’s REST API exposes publication metadata deposited by its members and trusted sources. Depending on what a record supplies, metadata can include bibliographic fields and information such as funding, licenses, post-publication updates, ORCID or ROR identifiers, and abstracts. Fields vary by record; the presence of a field in one response does not mean it will be present for every work.

Crossref says its public REST API requires no signup. Its documentation also says almost none of the metadata is subject to copyright and may be used for any purpose, while cautioning that some abstracts may be copyrighted. Open access to metadata is not permission to republish copyrighted article text or every abstract. Check rights for the specific content you plan to reuse.
The REST API documentation page was last updated 2020-04-08. Treat that date as a reason to verify current operational details in the documentation, not as evidence that the API is unavailable or unchanged.
Why this guide does not name a fifth API
The title’s “top 5” framing would imply five comparable, supported providers. The documentation available for this article substantiates one direct Google Scholar extractor and three APIs for other scholarly data sources. It does not establish a fifth comparable provider, nor does it support an independently measured ranking. Adding an unverified name to reach five would make the list less useful.
There is also no single source-independent substitute for Google Scholar. Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, and Crossref each represent their own systems and data intake. They may be good alternatives for a metadata task, but the documentation does not establish that they reproduce Google Scholar’s search results or coverage.

Choose by source, fields, and reuse needs
Start with the source you actually need
- Google Scholar results: evaluate SerpApi’s documented Google Scholar engine.
- Semantic Scholar records: evaluate the Academic Graph API for its paper and author retrieval.
- Multiple scholarly graph entities: evaluate OpenAlex for works, authors, sources, institutions, and topics.
- Deposited publication metadata: evaluate Crossref, while accounting for variable fields and abstract rights.
Then check the data contract
Write down the exact output your application needs before choosing: source, record types, identifiers, fields, filters, pagination, and acceptable missing data. For example, a workflow that must use Scholar-specific result ordering has a different requirement from one that needs bibliographic metadata and identifiers when supplied. Compare the provider documentation against that list; do not infer field availability across providers.
Verify operations before committing
Current pricing, rate limits, contractual terms, coverage, and reliability are not comparatively established in the documentation summarized here. Check each provider’s current official documentation and terms, and test representative queries for your use case before estimating ongoing costs or promising a particular level of coverage. No independent cross-provider performance statistic is available here to justify a winner on speed, completeness, or uptime.
Plan for identifiers and rights
Preserve the source and identifier returned with each record. Semantic Scholar documents paperId and corpusId; these are useful within its own data model, not evidence that another provider will accept the same identifier. For Crossref records, inspect the fields actually supplied and assess reuse rights for abstracts separately from metadata.
ScreenshotNeo is not a scholarly metadata API
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an API for Google Scholar results, papers, authors, or bibliographic metadata. It is not an alternative to the four data providers above. It may be relevant only to a separate task—capturing a web page as an image or PDF—not to extracting structured article data. Its screenshot endpoint and options are documented at ScreenshotNeo’s API documentation.

Or skip the browser setup
For that separate screenshot task, one GET request can return a screenshot or PDF. Example cURL request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing. Its MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These features apply to screenshots, not scholarly metadata retrieval. Frequently Asked Questions
Can these APIs be used together in one article-data workflow?
Yes, if the application intentionally combines distinct sources and preserves each record’s provenance and identifier. The documentation summarized here does not establish a universal cross-provider identifier or record-matching scheme, so matching and deduplication rules must be designed and checked for the workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does a metadata API provide the full text of a scholarly paper?
The capabilities described here concern search results, scholarly records, or deposited metadata; they do not establish access to full-text articles. Verify full-text availability and reuse rights separately for each source and work.
