Four Google apps—Chrome, Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos—can make common Galaxy tasks easier to continue across devices: browsing, email, file handling, and photo backup. Here, “lighter” means a workflow that may feel simpler for your needs, not an app proven to be faster, smaller, or more battery-efficient. Samsung’s published descriptions establish what these apps do on Galaxy devices, but do not show that they outperform Samsung’s apps.
What “lighter” can—and cannot—mean
There is no head-to-head evidence here showing that these alternatives use less storage, run faster, consume less battery, or make users more productive. Treat “lighter” as a personal workflow choice: an app may suit you better if it puts the tasks you use most in one familiar place or helps you continue work on another device.
Samsung lists Chrome, Gmail, Drive, Google Photos, and Messages among Google apps available by default or through Google Play on Galaxy phones and tablets. What is preinstalled, available, or shown in settings can depend on the device and software version. The four alternatives below focus on browsing, email, files, and photos; the Messages transition is covered separately because Samsung has announced a support change.

Four Google apps to consider for everyday Galaxy tasks
1. Chrome for browsing that continues from a computer
If you already use Chrome on a computer, Samsung says Chrome on Galaxy can carry over open tabs, bookmarks, and address-bar data. That can make it a practical choice when you regularly move between desktop and phone browsing. Samsung’s description does not establish how Chrome compares with Samsung Internet in speed, privacy, battery use, or features.

Samsung’s Galaxy guide to Google apps describes Chrome’s cross-device browsing functions. Check that the app and the features you want are available on your device and software version.
2. Gmail for email
Samsung describes Gmail as an app for sending and receiving email. It may fit a simpler routine if Gmail is already where you manage your messages; the available evidence does not establish a feature-by-feature comparison with Samsung Email or other email apps.

Choose based on the accounts and inbox workflow you actually use. The cited Samsung guide documents Gmail’s basic email function, not account-specific setup instructions or comparative advantages.
3. Google Drive for cloud files
Samsung says Drive can open, view, rename, and share cloud files. It is worth considering if those are the file tasks you need to do from your Galaxy device. That feature list does not establish that Drive replaces every file-management function in Samsung’s apps or that it is the best option for every account or workflow.

4. Google Photos for photo and video backup
Samsung describes Google Photos as an app for backing up photos and videos. If backup is the task you want to handle, that is a specific reason to consider it. The cited source does not establish backup settings, storage limits, or how Google Photos compares with Samsung Gallery, so check the app’s current settings and terms before relying on it for a particular backup plan.

How to choose without adding needless app switching
Installing another app is useful only if it makes a task easier to complete. Before changing your setup, decide what you want to improve and check the details that affect whether the app fits:
Recommended Free Tools
- Task: Name the job—continuing browser sessions, handling email, opening and sharing cloud files, or backing up photos and videos.
- Continuity: Check whether the app supports the handoff or backup workflow you need. Samsung’s descriptions establish only the functions listed above, not every account or device combination.
- Availability: Confirm that the app and relevant settings are available on your Galaxy model and software version. Samsung notes that screens and features can vary.
- “Lighter” in your case: Decide whether you mean a simpler routine or a measurable change in speed, storage, or battery life. No comparative measurements for those performance outcomes are established here.
Try one app change at a time and keep the previous workflow available until you have confirmed that the tasks you depend on still work. This lets you judge convenience in your own setup without assuming that a different app will improve device performance.

Samsung Messages support changed in July 2026
Samsung US Support says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher starting July 2026, and recommends switching to Google Messages. As of October 2026, that stated date has passed. Samsung says devices running Android 11 or lower are not affected by this support change. Check your phone’s software version and Samsung’s current Samsung Messages transition guidance for the information that applies to your device.
Samsung says its newest Galaxy phones come with Google Messages preinstalled. To change the default SMS app, its instructions give this path: Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > SMS app, then select the app you want. The available screens and options may vary by device or software version; see Samsung’s instructions for changing the default messaging app.
Samsung says message history transfers automatically when switching, but the time depends on the amount of data and can take up to approximately 24 hours. It also notes that RCS may pause temporarily on devices released before 2022 and that all participants need RCS enabled for RCS messaging. These are Samsung’s stated migration caveats, not a guarantee that every carrier and device combination will behave identically.
