The 3D Systems ProJet 1200 is a compact, specialized micro-SLA printer for small, detailed casting patterns, dental wax-ups, visualization models and prototypes—not a general-purpose machine for large parts. Its historical specifications are appealing for fine work, but its dedicated VisiJet FTX cartridges and uncertain present-day consumable and service availability make a used machine a buy only after you verify the whole workflow.
What the ProJet 1200 is designed to print
3D Systems positioned the ProJet 1200 for small, finely detailed jobs: metal-casting patterns, dental wax-ups, concept models and validation prototypes. That focus is the key to judging it. Its build envelope is narrow, but the machine was intended for detail-oriented work rather than large-format production.
The 2018 manufacturer white paper describes Green and Cast materials as suitable for burnout and ash-free casting, Clear as suited to transparent prototypes, and Gray as ready for painting. Those are manufacturer application claims, not independently verified results. The paper also states that “Most jewelry applications can be printed in less than two hours, and as many as 10 dental wax-ups can be printed in less than one hour.” Treat those as historical vendor throughput claims, not promised job times: actual duration depends on the model and workflow. 3D Systems’ 2018 ProJet 1200 white paper

| Specification | Manufacturer-listed value |
|---|---|
| Maximum build envelope | 43 × 27 × 150 mm (1.69 × 1.06 × 5.90 in) |
| Layer thickness | 30 microns |
| Resolution | 56 microns |
| Curing | Integrated, self-contained curing station |
| Print preparation and management | 3D Sprint software |
Check the envelope against the actual part, including orientation and any supports or surrounding clearance required by your workflow. A small build area can suit jewelry patterns or dental work while ruling out parts that need more width or volume. The 30-micron layer figure and 56-micron resolution describe different specification categories; neither, by itself, guarantees the surface finish or dimensional accuracy of a finished part.
What resin does a ProJet 1200 use?
The ProJet 1200 uses 3D Systems VisiJet FTX material cartridges. The 2017 technical sheet describes an all-in-one package combining material and build tray and lists 30 g cartridges for FTX Green, FTX Cast and FTX Gray. This model-specific format is central to ownership: the machine’s usefulness depends on finding suitable cartridges, not simply buying resin by the bottle. The documentation cited here does not establish generic UV resin or third-party materials as compatible. 3D Systems’ 2017 VisiJet FTX material data sheet

Listed VisiJet FTX materials
| Material | Manufacturer description and stated properties | Intended use described by the manufacturer |
|---|---|---|
| FTX Green | “Tough castable plastic”; tensile strength 30 MPa; ash content 0.01% | Castable patterns |
| FTX Cast | “Wax and plastic hybrid for delicate castings”; tensile strength 2.2 MPa; ash content 0.008% | Delicate casting patterns |
| FTX Gray | “Primer gray general purpose”; tensile strength 28 MPa; ash content listed as N/A | General-purpose models; the manufacturer’s white paper says Gray is ready for painting |
The tensile-strength and ash-content figures are manufacturer material data from 2017, not independent test results. The sheet says values are for reference, may vary and should be followed by customer suitability testing. The 2016 product specification also lists FTX Clear, Silver and Gold, but that historical listing does not establish current availability or regional support for those materials. 3D Systems’ 2016 ProJet 1200 specification sheet
Is the ProJet 1200 discontinued?
A Japanese reseller describes the ProJet 1200 as discontinued and directs owners with product issues to their reseller or 3D Systems. That is reseller-reported status, not a definitive global lifecycle announcement. Separately, the 3D Systems support page, dated April 28, 2026, lists sections for documentation, software, spare parts, support and warranty. A listed section does not guarantee that a particular download, part, repair or service contract is currently available. For your region, confirm sales, service and support directly with 3D Systems or a local distributor.

Is a used ProJet 1200 worth buying?
It may suit a buyer with a specific small-part casting or dental workflow, access to the correct cartridges and a way to keep the printer running. The available evidence does not establish current cartridge stock, used-machine prices, a software compatibility matrix, or active service coverage. Consequently, a low purchase price alone cannot show whether the system is economical to operate.

What to verify before purchase
- Cartridges: Ask for photos, date codes and condition for the specific FTX materials you intend to use. Confirm there is a credible ongoing supply source; do not assume old cartridges remain usable.
- A successful print: Ask the seller to demonstrate a print using the intended material, rather than relying on a power-on demonstration.
- Software access: Confirm the seller can provide a functioning 3D Sprint installation and license, and that it works with the operating system you plan to use. The support page lists software-related sections, but does not establish that a particular download or license is available.
- Parts and local service: Identify how you would obtain model-specific spare parts and repair help in your location before the machine needs either.
- Job fit: Check that your part fits within the 43 × 27 × 150 mm envelope and that the listed detail and material options suit its intended use.
These checks are practical precautions based on the dedicated cartridge workflow and reported discontinuation; they are not vendor warranty terms.

Without established current competitor measurements or prices, a responsible comparison starts with the job rather than a brand-to-brand ranking. Assess alternatives against these four requirements:

- Comprehensive Component Kit: This assembly includes an aluminum alloy sink, bimetallic heatbreak, 0.4mm brass nozzle, 24V 50W heating rod, thermistor, and silicone sleeve for high flow printing.
- Ring Heating Technology: The ceramic heater includes a built in copper plated heating ring for 360 degree uniform thermal distribution to improve heating speed and consistency.
- Multi Material Construction: Features a brass nozzle and bimetallic heatbreak for low thermal conductivity combined with an aluminum alloy sink for efficient heat dissipation.
- Leakage Prevention Design: The threaded heatbreak integrates with the copper plated heating ring to create a seal suitable for use with PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, and PA filaments.
- Equipment Compatibility: This hot end assembly is compatible with 3D Systems CubePro, 3D Systems ProJet 1200, Airwolf 3D AXIOMe, Anet A8, B9Creations, B9Creator, and CR 10 printers.
- Part size: Can the build envelope accommodate the complete part in the required orientation?
- Detail: Do the published layer and resolution figures match the level of detail the job calls for, and are they comparable measures?
- Material outcome: Do you need a castable pattern, a wax-and-plastic hybrid for delicate casting, or a general-purpose model?
- Operating risk: Can you reliably obtain consumables, run the software, source parts and get service in your region?
The ProJet 1200 is most compelling when its compact format and intended materials align closely with the work. If dependable consumables and repair support cannot be confirmed, a different printer with a verifiable operating supply chain may be the lower-risk choice.
