Check your case manual, the cooler’s full dimensions, and nearby component clearances before buying.
Does a 360mm AIO make a big difference over a 240mm AIO?
A 360mm AIO has a longer radiator and more radiator surface area to work with. That can make it an attractive option when your case supports it, but the format alone cannot tell you how much cooler or quieter a particular system will run. Those outcomes depend on the exact cooler models, CPU, workload, fan settings, and test conditions. The sources available here do not establish a controlled, like-for-like temperature or noise difference.
Corsair’s Hydro X guidance recommends using as much radiator surface area as fits and gives a thicker 240mm radiator as one possible alternative when a 360mm radiator will not fit. Its example is a 240mm radiator with 60mm thickness; that does not mean every such radiator and fan assembly will clear every case.
Will the radiator fit your case?
Check compatibility for the exact case and mounting position—not just whether the case listing mentions “360mm.” A front mount may support a larger radiator than a top mount, and fitting one radiator can affect drive cages or other hardware.

- DeepCool lists the CC360 WH ARGB as supporting a 360mm radiator at the front but only a 240mm radiator at the top.
- Fractal Design’s Define R5 chart lists both 240mm and 360mm front radiator compatibility. It says a 360mm front installation requires removing the ODD and HDD cages, and cannot be combined with a 360mm or 420mm top radiator.
- Corsair’s AIR 5400 guidance specifies compatible radiator sizes, a maximum combined radiator-and-fan thickness of 70mm, and at least 380mm of tube length, with 400mm or more preferred. These limits apply to that case, not to cases generally.
Use the case manufacturer’s compatibility chart and manual for the particular configuration you plan to build. Some charts specify maximum thickness, fan spacing, cage removal, or combinations of mounts that are not possible at the same time.
Check complete dimensions and component clearance
The 240mm and 360mm labels describe radiator format, not the radiator’s full dimensions. For example, Lian Li lists its GALAHAD AIO 240 radiator at 273 × 123.5 × 27mm and the 360 version at 397.5 × 123.5 × 27mm. Fans add thickness, so compare the complete radiator-and-fan assembly against available space.

MSI’s CPU cooler buying guidance emphasizes that accommodating the radiator is often the challenge, rather than fitting the cooler onto the CPU socket. Check clearance around motherboard VRMs, EPS power cables, RAM, the GPU, and other installed parts. Also verify tube reach and whether the case chart requires removing a drive cage or other hardware.
Compare the actual cooler models, not just their sizes
Two coolers with the same radiator format can differ in dimensions, included fans, mounting hardware, and socket support. Confirm the selected model’s current product page and manual before purchase. For example, Corsair describes the H100 RGB as a 240mm AIO and identifies the H150 RGB as a 360mm option; its product page lists Intel LGA 1700/1851 and AMD AM4/AM5 support. Product examples do not establish that a particular model is the best current choice, so verify availability and specifications for the exact version being sold.

If performance, noise, or value is deciding the choice, compare independent measurements and current prices for the specific models. A useful test should identify the CPU, workload, ambient conditions, and fan settings; a radiator-size label by itself is not a benchmark or price-per-performance comparison.

- Choose a mounting position. Check whether your case supports a 240mm or 360mm radiator in that location.
- Check full clearance. Compare the radiator length, width, and radiator-plus-fan thickness with the case limits and surrounding components.
- Check installation requirements. Look for tube-length requirements, drive-cage removal, and restrictions on using multiple radiator mounts together.
- Verify the cooler. Confirm CPU socket support, mounting hardware, and dimensions for the exact model.
- Compare evidence and cost. Use like-for-like testing for performance or noise claims, and compare current prices for the actual models rather than assuming one format is better value.
If both sizes fit, choose based on the specific models and your priorities; the 360mm format gives you more radiator surface area, but the available evidence does not justify a guaranteed temperature or noise improvement. If only the 240mm option fits your preferred position, a compatible 240mm cooler—or a different mounting position or case—may be the practical route.
