A hardcoded Supabase JavaScript .limit(80) caps that query at 80 rows; it does not fetch the next batch automatically. That makes it a plausible explanation for articles missing from a page, but it does not prove why exactly 31 are absent. To confirm the cause, compare the query’s matching count with the returned array and inspect the query chain and response metadata.

What `.limit(80)` does—and what it does not prove

Supabase documents .limit(rows) as setting the maximum number of rows returned by a query. With .limit(80), that query can return no more than 80 rows. It does not automatically request rows 81 onward.

The limit alone does not establish that 31 articles vanished because of it. The actual result also depends on filters, ordering, joins, other limits, and how the application handles the response. Without the query and response evidence, “31 missing” is a symptom to investigate, not a confirmed root cause.

How to check whether the query is returning a partial result

  1. Read the complete query chain

Find the call that fetches the articles and inspect every modifier: .limit(80), filters, joins, and any additional caps in the client or server code. Make sure you are examining the query that supplies the page where articles are missing.

  2. Compare the match count with the received rows

Run the same query conditions and determine how many rows match. Compare that number with the length of the returned array. PostgREST documents response range information and the Prefer: count=exact option for requesting a total; exact counts can be slower on large tables. See its pagination and count documentation.

  3. Check ordering before using ranges

Pagination needs a predictable sequence so successive pages do not skip or repeat rows. Supabase notes that range behavior respects query ordering. Order by a stable field, or a stable combination of fields, before fetching ranges.

  4. Verify that the application consumes every page

If more than 80 matching rows are needed, request subsequent pages and combine their results. Stop when the response indicates there are no more rows, rather than assuming the first returned array is complete. Test with the actual matching count and confirm that the page-building code uses every fetched batch.

  5. Check project settings separately

An explicit client-side limit is different from the project’s maximum-row setting. Supabase’s versioned JavaScript v1 fetch documentation describes a default maximum of 1,000 rows that can be changed in Project API Settings, and points to range() for pagination. Because that reference is for v1, check the setting and SDK version for the deployment you are diagnosing before treating 1,000 as its current configuration.

Choosing a pagination approach

Supabase JavaScript offers .range(from, to), with zero-based inclusive endpoints. For example, .range(0, 79) requests the first 80 positions and .range(80, 159) requests the next 80. Apply a stable order to the query before requesting these ranges. PostgREST also supports limit/offset parameters and HTTP range headers; its response metadata and optional count can help the application detect where it is in the result set.

The essential difference is operational: whichever mechanism you use, define page boundaries, preserve ordering across requests, determine how the application knows it has reached the end, and decide whether it needs a total count. A single cap is not pagination by itself.

What would confirm the “31 articles” explanation?

The `.limit(80)` hypothesis fits only if the query matches more rows than it returns and the application does not fetch the remainder. If the same filtered query matches 80 or fewer rows, the limit does not explain why 31 are missing; investigate the filters, data, and rendering path instead. The incident cannot be attributed to this one line without evidence from the actual query and response.
