There are three different controls to know about: the command that opens or closes a split view, the setting that shows or hides the toolbar button, and the administrative policy that disables the feature across Edge. Hiding the button is not the same as disabling Split screen.
1. Use the Split screen command
This is the normal method for opening or leaving Split screen. It does not permanently enable or disable the feature; it only controls the current browsing view.
Enable or open Split screen
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner. You can also press Alt+F.
- Select Split screen.
Edge places the current webpage in one pane and lets you choose another page for the second pane. A split tab supports two webpages—not three or more.

You can also open a specific link in the second pane:
- Right-click a link on a webpage.
- Select Open link in split screen window.
When a split view is already active, the context-menu wording may instead be Open link in right split screen, Open link in bottom split screen, Open link in left split screen, or Open link in top split screen, depending on the layout.
Exit Split screen
To close one pane, select Close split screen (X) at the top-right of that pane. Edge leaves the other webpage open.
To keep both webpages but turn them into separate tabs:
- Select More options (…) inside either pane.
- Select Separate two tabs.
Closing or separating a split view does not disable Split screen. You can still open it again from the menu or a link’s context menu.
2. Show or hide the Split screen toolbar button
Edge can place a Split screen button beside the address bar. This is useful if you use the feature frequently, or it can be removed if you do not want the button taking up toolbar space.

Show the button
- Open Edge and select Settings and more (…).
- Select Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Find the Split screen section.
- Turn on Show split screen button on the toolbar.
The Split screen button should now appear near the address bar. Select it to open a two-pane tab.
Hide the button
Use the same path—Settings and more > Settings > Appearance—and turn off Show split screen button on the toolbar.

Does hiding the button disable Split screen?
No. This setting controls the button’s visibility, not the complete feature. Users may still be able to open Split screen through Settings and more > Split screen or by right-clicking a link and selecting Open link in split screen window.
If your goal is simply to remove an unwanted toolbar icon, turning this setting off is sufficient. If you need to prevent users from using Split screen, use the policy method below.
3. Enable or disable Split screen with Edge policy
The supported administrative control is Microsoft Edge’s SplitScreenEnabled policy. This is intended for administrators managing Windows or macOS devices.

Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge > Enable split screen feature in Microsoft Edge
Choose one of these settings:

| Disabled | Users cannot use Split screen. |
The policy is mandatory, does not support recommended-only configuration, applies across Edge profiles on the device, and requires an Edge restart after it changes. It is not a per-profile preference.
Windows Registry commands
If you are configuring a standalone Windows computer rather than using Group Policy, the same policy can be set in the registry. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
To enable Split screen, run:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v SplitScreenEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
To disable it, run:
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v SplitScreenEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
Restart Edge after running either command. The policy does not support dynamic refresh, so leaving the browser open can make the change appear not to work.

Because this changes a machine-wide policy, create a backup or use your organization’s standard change process before editing the registry.
macOS policy
On macOS, configure the managed preference named SplitScreenEnabled. Set its value to <true/> to allow Split screen or false to disable it. The policy is supported in Edge 117 and later on macOS. Restart Edge after changing the managed preference.

Common problems
The Split screen button is missing
The button may simply be hidden. Go to Settings and more > Settings > Appearance and enable Show split screen button on the toolbar.
A missing button does not prove that the feature is unavailable. Check Settings and more > Split screen, or right-click a link to look for Open link in split screen window.
The toolbar setting is on, but Split screen does not work
A device-wide or organization-managed SplitScreenEnabled policy may be disabling the feature. In that case, turning on the toolbar button does not override the policy. The policy applies across Edge profiles, not just the profile where you changed the toolbar setting.
Split screen works on my computer but not my phone
This is expected. Microsoft documents the feature for Windows and macOS. It is not supported in Edge for Android or iOS.

Should I use edge://flags/#edge-split-screen?
Older guides may recommend that flag. It was associated with the feature’s preview and rollout period, but it is not the current definitive way to manage Split screen. Use the normal Edge interface for personal use or the SplitScreenEnabled policy for a complete administrative disable.
FAQ
Can I use Split screen with more than two websites?
No. An Edge split tab contains two webpages. To view additional pages, open more tabs or browser windows.
Does closing Split screen disable the feature?
No. Closing a pane or choosing Separate two tabs only ends the current split view. The feature remains available.
Why can users still open Split screen after I hide the toolbar button?
The toolbar option only hides the button. Users may still have access through the Settings and more menu or a link’s context menu. Use the SplitScreenEnabled policy to block the feature completely.
Is Split screen available in Edge on Android or iPhone?
No. Microsoft supports Edge Split screen on Windows and macOS beginning with Edge 117, not on Android or iOS.
How do I make a policy change take effect?
Close and restart Microsoft Edge after changing Group Policy, the Windows registry, or the macOS managed preference. SplitScreenEnabled does not support dynamic refresh.
The Bottom Line
Use Settings and more > Split screen to open or close a split view. Use Appearance to show or hide the toolbar button. To disable Split screen everywhere on a managed Windows or macOS device, configure SplitScreenEnabled; hiding the toolbar button alone is not a complete disable.
