On Ubuntu, three useful tools cover different parts of system security: unattended-upgrades installs configured package updates, ufw manages firewall rules, and AppArmor restricts what profiled applications can do. They reduce exposure; none guarantees that an update is safe or makes a PC invulnerable. Names, defaults, and setup vary by Linux distribution.

What each tool protects—and what it does not

Tool Primary role Ubuntu availability or default Important scope
unattended-upgrades Installs configured package updates automatically. Included in default Ubuntu Desktop and Server installations starting with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, according to Ubuntu documentation. By default, updates cover configured archive repositories—not every third-party repository or PPA.
ufw Configures firewall rules for network traffic. Ubuntu documents it as the uncomplicated firewall tool; firewall policy still needs to be configured. See Ubuntu’s security suggestions. It manages firewall policy; it is not automatic protection against every network threat.
AppArmor Confines applications using profiles that restrict permissions and capabilities. Installed and loaded by default on Ubuntu, according to Ubuntu’s AppArmor documentation. Only loaded, enforced profiles impose restrictions; the kernel feature alone does not prove every application is confined.

These tools are complementary, not substitutes. Updating packages addresses known software fixes; a firewall controls network access; AppArmor limits the actions of applications covered by policy.

1. Use unattended-upgrades to install configured updates

Automatic updates can reduce the time a system remains without available package fixes. Ubuntu documentation says security updates are applied daily by default, with a 24-hour delay for security updates and a seven-day delay for normal updates. Those are documented defaults, not guarantees for customized systems. See Ubuntu’s security-updates documentation.

Manage automatic updates on Ubuntu Desktop

Open Software & Updates and use its Updates tab to review automatic-update settings. Available labels and choices can vary by Ubuntu release. Ubuntu also documents terminal-based configuration in its automatic updates guide.

Check repository coverage and logs

The default configuration does not automatically cover every third-party repository or PPA. If you rely on one, its allowed origin must be configured separately; otherwise, do not assume its packages receive unattended updates. Ubuntu recommends using a later-numbered drop-in configuration file rather than editing the original unattended-upgrades configuration directly. Logs are kept under /var/log/unattended-upgrades/. The configuration guidance is documented in Ubuntu’s automatic updates guide.

Automatic installation helps apply updates from configured sources; it does not independently certify that a package or repository is trustworthy. Review which sources your system trusts and check the logs if you need to confirm update activity.

2. Use ufw to manage Ubuntu firewall rules

Ubuntu describes ufw as the tool used to configure firewalls. Its purpose is to express firewall policy—for example, deciding which network connections should be allowed—not to block every possible attack or replace secure application configuration. See Ubuntu’s security guidance.

Because firewall rules depend on how the computer is used, do not enable or change rules blindly on a remote machine: a rule that blocks the management connection can lock you out. Decide which inbound services must remain reachable before changing policy, and verify the effect from a safe access path. The cited Ubuntu guidance explains ufw’s role but does not establish one universal rule set for every desktop or server.

3. Use AppArmor to confine profiled applications

AppArmor applies application-specific security profiles to restrict permissions and capabilities. Ubuntu says it is installed and loaded by default; check its status with aa-status. The kernel documentation describes AppArmor as a mandatory access control (MAC) security extension and explains that policy must be loaded from user space to impose restrictions. See the Ubuntu AppArmor guide and the Linux kernel AppArmor documentation.

Know whether a profile is enforcing

  • Enforce mode: the profile’s policy is applied, restricting behavior that violates it.
  • Complain mode: violations are logged, but behavior is not blocked by that profile. Treat this as observation or learning, not active confinement.

Run aa-status to inspect AppArmor status and profile modes. Do not infer that every application is protected just because AppArmor is present: protection depends on an applicable profile being loaded and enforced.

How this differs on Fedora

Linux distributions do not share Ubuntu’s exact tools or defaults. Fedora’s security documentation describes DNF package-signature verification by default and firewalld zones as relevant alternatives. These are Fedora-specific notes, not Ubuntu setup instructions; consult documentation for the Fedora release you use before changing settings. See the Fedora Security Features Matrix.
