The 3 Legged Thing Modular Tactical Tripod System tackles a familiar tripod compromise: a short, easy-to-carry support may not reach high enough, while a taller, stiffer setup is bulkier. Its interchangeable canopies and leg sets let you change configurations without replacing the entire tripod. That is genuinely clever—but the benefit depends on choosing the right parts, and extra configurations cost more.
What makes the system modular?
The platform combines one of two magnesium-alloy canopies, James or Jason, with one of three interchangeable carbon-fibre leg sets. According to Amateur Photographer’s 2026 review and the manufacturer’s Kickstarter FAQ, every leg set fits either canopy. You can therefore prioritize a compact setup for travel, then swap to a taller or more stability-oriented leg set when the job calls for it.
This changes the trade-off, rather than eliminating it: you still have to decide which canopy and legs suit your usual kit, and buy additional components if you want multiple configurations ready to use.
Which leg set should you choose?
The figures below are specifications reported by Amateur Photographer in 2026, not independent measurements. The reviewer describes the five-section set as the travel option, the four-section set as the natural all-rounder, and the three-section set as the taller, stability-focused choice.

| Leg set | Maximum height | Folded length | Weight | Section detail | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Five sections | 123 cm | 34.5 cm | 807 g | 14 mm narrowest section | Travel and compact packing |
| Four sections | 140.5 cm | 45 cm | 852 g | 17 mm narrowest section | General-purpose balance |
| Three sections | 154 cm | 60 cm | 1.083 kg | Tube diameter not stated in the review | More height and a stability-focused setup |
The pattern is straightforward: fewer sections buy more reach, but the legs take up more room when folded. The three-section tubes are larger in diameter, according to the review. That may matter if you often work with longer lenses, heavier equipment, or in breezy conditions, but the dimensions alone do not establish how stable a particular camera-and-lens combination will be.
James or Jason: which canopy fits your setup?
Both canopies accept compatible tripod heads through a standard 3/8-inch-16 mounting thread, according to 3 Legged Thing’s Kickstarter FAQ. The measurements below are reported by Amateur Photographer’s 2026 review.

| Canopy | Width | Weight | Reviewer’s guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| James | 9 cm | 356 g | Choose for portability |
| Jason | 14 cm | 419 g | Choose for heavier kit |
The wider, heavier Jason is the reviewer’s pick for heavier equipment; James keeps the support narrower and lighter. These are canopy dimensions and weights, not complete-tripod weights.
What else can you do with it?
- Adjust the leg spread: The review lists positions of 23°, 55°, and 80°. It also says the Trigger-Pull controls let the reviewer change angles in one action and felt quicker and more natural than older pull-out adjusters. That is the reviewer’s handling assessment, not an independent test.
- Remove a leg: The review describes using a leg as a monopod or boom.
- Change the feet: The feet are interchangeable, giving you the option to adapt that part of the setup.
- Build a tabletop support: The Kickstarter launch overview describes using a canopy and feet without the legs for tabletop support.
The range of combinations is also a practical drawback: as Amateur Photographer notes, working out which parts make sense together can take some deciphering. The system is most appealing if you have a clear reason to switch configurations, not simply because it offers many possible ones.

Does it include a head, and how much does it cost?
The Kickstarter FAQ says tripod heads are not included in campaign rewards. It says compatible heads use a standard 3/8-inch-16 thread, and pairs the AirHed Orbit’s 55 mm version with James and its 72 mm version with Jason. The manufacturer states a 20 kg load capacity for the AirHed Orbit; that is a maker specification, not an independently verified test here.
Prices below are dated Kickstarter pledge figures reported in 2026, not current retail quotes. The review and Digital Camera World’s 2026 launch overview reported system pledges starting at £269 for canopy and legs. Digital Camera World reported £669 for a set with all three leg variations, with the AirHed Orbit available as a £152 add-on. Your eventual total depends on which components and head you need; these campaign figures should not be treated as current prices or availability.

What are the main limitations?
- More configurations mean more parts: Getting more than one leg set or canopy adds to the cost and leaves you with components to manage.
- The head is a separate decision: Check whether your chosen package includes one; Kickstarter rewards did not, and the Orbit was an add-on.
- No centre-column option was reported at review time: Amateur Photographer said there was no centre column “yet.” That describes the review’s publication timeframe, not necessarily the system’s current configuration.
- The load figure needs context: The review lists a 30 kg maximum load, but its cited specification does not explain the test method or operational caveats. Treat it as a reported product rating, not a promise that every setup at or below that weight will be stable.
Should you buy the Modular Tactical Tripod System?
It makes the strongest case for itself if you regularly face different support needs—for example, compact packing on one trip and extra height or larger-diameter legs on another—and value changing the setup instead of owning wholly separate supports. If you will use only one configuration, the extra flexibility may not justify the cost or the effort of choosing among combinations.
At review time, Amateur Photographer said general sale was expected on the maker’s website after Kickstarter orders shipped. The manufacturer FAQ expected Kickstarter shipping to begin in January 2027, with timing dependent on order volume and chosen combinations. Those were campaign-era expectations, not guarantees; the available evidence here does not establish present retail availability.
